Lovely video. I lived from 1990 till 1998 in Berlin and was traveling all over northern DDR, Poland and Chechoslowakia. Here is a translation of the text written on the wall 8:49: "The Banner is a symbol of military honor, valor, and glory; it is a reminder to each soldier, sergeant, officer, and general of their sacred duty to faithfully serve and bravely and capably defend the Soviet Homeland…” It is a loyalty to the Unit Banner or Ship Flag. The funniest thing about the video is, that you hope the old people speak English. Quite some of the older generation in this part of Germany learned Russian in school.
The older people who grew up in the GDR speak mostly more Russian than English. May be that many of them forgot much of it but the most of them never learned a single word English. It's the same like the older people in Eastern European countries.
After listening to bald speak Russian for so long I now feel OK as a German speaker listening to bald only knowing about 3 words in German! Отлично, спасибо друг!
Yes, as someone who speaks German about as well as Bald speaks Russian it was very weird listening to it. My brain went: "why don't you ask about (this or that), you don't even need Russian, it's just German, why so silent?" Bald would probably pick up German quite easily. He'd have lots of help with pronounciation from already knowing Russian, but also discover that he through Russian already has quite a few words (& from English also, though maybe more cognates than easily recognisable loans).
Smashed it again Ben! The side quests are often better than the main storyline, this one was excellent. Also as soon as I saw that sign/poster I knew there’s no way you’d be leaving it behind! I’m seeing her sometimes in the videos but I still don’t see her personality, she seemed distant most of the time. What is the relation to Bald, girlfriend?
I've been a fan for a while now, and to see you bring home a piece of art from your favorite era in russia for a rescue cat from Cuba to enjoy is a great life accomplishment in my opinion. Both for you and the cat.

Wow the closed gates of Colditz brings back some memories. Around 2008, my cousin, uncle and I went to a games convention in Leipzig. We took a day off to visit Colditz only to find it closed. At the time, the gap under the gates was big enough to pass through and my uncle forced us under and promptly followed. We had the entire castle to ourselves for several hours. They were renovating at the time and most doors were "locked" via a removed door handle. We managed to find a handle laying around, granting us access to every inch of the castle. We climbed in the rafters where the glider was built and through the tunnels under the chapel. To cap it all off, by the time we got out, some sort of youth hostel kitchen had opened providing us with a cheap and well earned breakfast!

The point is that some of them already forgot Russian language
