Hand Pollinating Pineapple Guava Flowers (Feijoa) - July 2023

- So in this video, I show you how I hand pollinate the flowers on my pineapple guava (Feijoa) plants. I discuss cross-pollinating with different varieties to have a better chance of getting fruit to set.

Beautiful flowers there peter .❤❤ very nice
Thank you, yeah they are one of my favourites, very tropical looking 😄
Hope the hand pollination has worked. How fun that you got to taste the petals.
Thanks, Dani, I hope so too, I would love to try a couple of different varieties 🤞. The petals are pretty good, they can be quite mild, but you definitely can taste the sweetness in them 😄
The petals are amazing!
I’ve been pollinating my two trees over the last week or two, fingers crossed 🤞🏼
Thanks! Yeah, I love eating the petals, I'm not sure if I'll get any fruit off these plants this year, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Hopefully, you manage to get a few too 🤞
I've saved some pollen from my Mammoth and Triumph flowers, so I'm hoping I can use that to pollinate my Unique variety, which is getting close to opening now.
I've never noticed any variation between taste of the petals from plant to plant 😁
Lol, could have just been my imagination and it was a year since I last tried them 😂
Cut some stamens off with pollen on them and stick them in a glass in the freezer until the mammoth flower opens, it should stay viable 😁
Thanks, Brett. I did take some off but I left them in the kitchen at room temperature. I'll put some I'm a jar and put it in the freezer and see if that works. Depending on how long it lasts I could always try pollinating the Unique the same way too and adding some of its own pollen for good measure 🤞
@@PeterEntwistle think the pollen can stay viable for a few weeks ( for some plants ), not sure there is any research on feijoa flowers but can't hurt to try
Beautiful flowers there Peter. Do they have a scent? Hope your hand pollination will be a success
Yeah, they are lovely flowers, Louise. Do you grow any? I haven't tried smelling them, but the petals are quite good to eat. I'm not sure if this variety will prove to be self-fertile, most will only set when crossed with another variety, but worth trying anyway.
@PeterEntwistle no I don't have any of the feijoa types, I don't think I've got room in my garden.
Shame the Mammoth flowers haven't opened yet. Hopefully the self-pollination works. 🤞🏽
Yeah, I was a bit disappointed that all the Triumph flowers opened before the one on the Mammoth. Looking at the flowers it looked like they would have opened about the same time. I'm not very hopeful about them being self-fertile, a lot of people say the Triumph is not able to pollinate itself, but then some nurseries claim it is 🤷♂
Hi Peter, did the hand polination work out well for you?
I did manage to get one to set on the Mammoth and the Unique plant, but they didn't grow very much. I think it's due to our cooler summer this year and also possibly a lack of fertiliser. The Mammoth fruit has grown the most, but I don't think it will become an edible size before the frosts damage it.
