I put in the search term hand pollinate with paint brush, and as soon as I saw your face I was like, "of course he would have a video on it."

From what I've read, most Feijoa are not able to self-pollinating...meaning pollen from one tree must be used to pollinate the flowers of another tree. A few years ago I had two Feijoa in my yard and they produced fruit. One of them died. Thereafter, the other stopped producing. Last year I found a nursery with mature Feijoa and the owner confirmed that these are not self-pollinating. Now with two blooming trees in the yard both trees produce fruit. That indicates that hand pollinating flowers of the same tree (as shown here) may be ineffective, or effective because there's pollen from another tree that also gets on the brush. I hand pollinate by taking a few flowers from one tree and rub them around the flowers on the other, and then visa versa. That does seem to increase fruit production.

Thank you so much!!! When I googled how to hand pollinate a pineapple guava tree I didn't think I'd find anything. My little one and I just went outside with our paint brushes (smaller than yours but it looked like they worked), we even ate the leaves which were pretty good... and now we wait. Our tree stopped producing fruit last year and I noticed the little red blossoms and a lack of bees and ladybugs. This is a great solution! Thanks again!

I came here because I have a bush that misbehaves: All years it has lots of flowers. Some years it has lots of fruit. Some years (every other?), it has very little fruit. It is putting on new growth right now and probably will just have a few fruit. Next year I will try hand pollinating. It is supposed to be self-fertile, though I love it so much, if I saw a different variety, I might consider planting another one. In the meantime, i want more fruit because they are delicious! I am tired of years when it has lots of flowers and hardly any fruit, so hand pollinating here I come!

@jamesdt02 i grew about an 2 acre garden in the middle of a field of wildflowers and blackberrries there were countless bees....it was a good place to farm...i also had it tilled by tractor the winter before and then i did the rest by hand in the spring.....buy an acre and its easy yes i agree to that

Do i have to buy the pollen from somewhere or am I just brushing from flower to flower with the existing pollen on the tree? I have a tree that has just producing flowers with no fruit

Same tree and others around it if there are multiple varieties.

Hi John, i'm a huge fan living in the southwestern edge of San Francisco. I just bought one pineapple guava bush and i'm wondering if i should have purchased two to insure that i get cross pollination(if necessary). Also the bush is about 2.5ft tall, how long do you think it will take for it to begin to flower and eventually bear fruit? Keep the videos coming!!!

do you have to do this with melon or squash plants? I've noticed many flowers on both but no fruits yet. Should I have pollinated them?

So much work! Have you ever tried not hand pollinating these? We've grown these for 25 years and have almost a 100% natural pollination rate. Don't think I've seen a single flower that didn't turn into fruit. And with three bushes, we get literally 30 pounds of fruit from each bush! We have more trouble with macadamia pollination. The flower clusters seem to set only a few nuts per cluster, so instead of thousands of nuts, we end up with a few dozen. Would this work?

Feijoa is very common in NZ we incorrectly call it feejoah. I have a small shrub in a tub where I live in Australia and thankfully we had a couple of very cold weeks and its covered in flowers so stoked I found your video.

I usually let the bees do all this work. But thanks now I know how to do this.

I think it would be fun to grow Vanilla, but I'm not sure I can without a greenhouse? I'm near you, in Fairfield, so fairly similar climate. I wonder if there is a video on how to hand polinate vanilla... :)
