  • Interviewing Skills -
    I’ve interviewed over 1000 designers and reviewed portfolios for over 25 years for some of the largest global companies and agencies. If you’re interviewing for a job as a designer or any kind of creative professional - I’ve got some advice to share about what to do, what not to do, what works and what doesn’t. I also share a number of questions you can ask your interviewer to show them you are engaged and will be the best person for the job.

But I am always encouraged by creative pro's who comment (read some of them below...) and say what I shared here was directly responsible for them getting a job! Hey Philip i'm new here but i already love your channel, one little tip/suggestion, between 250Hz and 450Hz decrease 2dB or maybe even 4dB with a not so open Q and you can also cut all the frequencies under 80Hz on your vocal track, this will improve your audio quality.
    Thanks for all your amazing videos, you're great!.

    • @PhilipVanDusen
      @PhilipVanDusen  6 років тому +1

      Leonardo, very astute critique of the audio, Thanks. I take the audio direct from a Rode NT2000 condenser mic into an ART tube mic pre and them directly into my Canon 80D. I don't touch the audio EQ in post at all. I'm sure I should, and I'd like to, but I don't have the time. Amazing to have you as a sub!

    • @leonardofernandes2655
      @leonardofernandes2655 6 років тому +1

      Philip VanDusen i understand, you have pretty good signal flow when you record your audio, if you edit in Final Cut Pro you have all the plugins of logic which are great and you can use a preset for this and wouldn't take you any time, if you use Premier (my personal favorite) I think it has a pretty decent Equalizer, I'm a Sound Engineer so I always work on a professional DAW but I understand that time is a huge factor when you are an active UA-camr. Keep up with the good job!!

    • @PhilipVanDusen
      @PhilipVanDusen  6 років тому +1

      Leonardo, I'm a musician too and have written, recorded and mixed in Logic since before Apple bought it and it was called Notator Logic by Emagic. I take a very quick and dirty approach to video editing and although I have used Premier Pro - I do all my editing in Screenflow. Its the fastest app for me and does the job. But it's audio capabilities are limited. Thanks for the advice!

    I didn't see this video before!
    Super useful. I had few interviews last year and I tried to prepare, but there was few things I missed. I'll add from myself:
    1. When you present your portfolio, make sure it looks nice. I slammed my designs on white, instead of putting them into mock ups.
    2. I was so excited for a perspective to get a new job, that I started to talk about my current workplace in past, or even slightly in a negative way. It indeed is hell on earth, but you do not want to express it, even at slightest.
    3. I make jokes when I'm stressed and I think it generally works well, but I find I make too many of them and might not be taken seriously for the role in the end. Balance is the key.
    Right now, I feel like I'm way smarter about interviews, but not letting nervousness get in the way is still a challenge.

    • @PhilipVanDusen
      @PhilipVanDusen  5 років тому +1

      Jagoda. #2 is an excellent point that I wish I had made in the video. Negative talk about an old employer is the kiss of death - because we all know - if you are talking about them like that now - "we" are next. Also I have found that "belly-achers" tend to be bellyachers on the job - poisoning the pond (or studio) as well. Also #1 Great point about mockups- they are so easy to do these days there is no excuse not to use them on all your work. Cheers J! Good to see you back!

      @@PhilipVanDusen I think the main reason why not to say anything is because from employers perspective it's hard to judge whether you really have a hard time at work and why or whether you exaggerate and you are the toxic one. I feel like 9 times out of 10 they think the latter. It's not worth a risk, even if employee's situation is indeed really bad. I'll admit I ended up taking my employer to court because of what has been happening; it's just so wrong and illegal that you can't let it be.
      However regardless of that, it is not relevant to you trying to get a job, so it's just not worth mentioning. I think one should just focus on the future and separate themselves from their current workplace situation.
      My point was that it just can be hard sometimes when asked for a reason to want to quit, or current position in general. One needs to completely mask their feelings, and previous year I was not too successful.
      I never went anywhere, just a bit busy with my new idea, that I might actually tell you more about soon :)

      @@jagodabrie411 You're right that it is hard trying not to be totally transparent - but in a job interview it is the best idea. You are selling yourself to them after-all. Hi Philip, it's so great that you mentioned about the business aspect of designing, many agencies in my country want only hands to move pixels.
    What do you think about the employer who is asking the designer to make a sample design before the actual interview?

      Ewelina, Doing a project as part of the interview process is not unheard of. I did a project early in my career for a job - and got the job because of it. It depends on 1. How much you want that particular job and 2. if the project isn't so gigantic that it is essentially asking for lots of design work on spec.

      Pay attention to this video then. It sounds trite, but sit up straight - physically lean in - and do some research into the department. Find out a couple alumni who graduated from the Design School and check them out online/ The Alumni department at the University will give you a couple names. Then bring them up in your interview and watch the interviewer be totally blown away by your true engagement.

      Ash, there are a LOT of free portfolio websites where you can feature your work. You can add your portfolio to Behance.com for free (owned by Adobe and one of the largest portfolio sites) And yes, you do need to have your portfolio online in addition to having a .pdf to send to people.

      Leave salary negotiations for another meeting after you are offered the role. If you are there and interviewing chances are you know something about the salary range. But the negotiations should happen later. Negotiating salary is an art and a science - and I'm afraid it's too much to go into here. But thats a great idea for a new video!

      Sundus, Great question. If you want to be a creative director or art director you will need to start as a designer first. ALL AD's and CD's come up from the design ranks. The fact that you have a MBA in Marketing is a great start. Now the next move is to start designing. Step 1: take a course in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Start here at byol.me/philip (affiliate link) Daniel Scott is the best in the Adobe teacher in the business and his site membership is SUPER cheap.

    I recently had a phone interview with a Fortune 500 company, and it was a different experience altogether. It was difficult to gauge the response and interest of the creative director on the other line, especially when she was silently taking notes during the conversation. There would be long periods of silence that felt excruciating and awkward.

Saying "range" give you wiggle room to negotiate more if you get the offer. and it gets the employer to give you an idea of the max they are thinking of paying, but I assure you, for the right person they will always go above the salary they state.
