    Your content is Gold! Thank you so much for this. You may have already and I am yet to find it, but do you have a video on "Finding your audience"? Targeting seems to be a huge entrepreneur hurdle, at least it is for me.

    • @PhilipVanDusen
      @PhilipVanDusen  6 років тому +1

      AJ, That's a great idea. With "entrepreneur" being about a broad a topic as there is it would be hard to make suggestions about where to find an audience without knowing which audience it is - if you understand my meaning. But I'll think about it more. It's a good idea.

    Great video Philip! We're on the same wavelength. However, some would say this is too much. You need to focus on ONE thing. I'm a creative/entrepreneur at heart. I'm always coming up with good creative ideas and want to express my creativity in many ways. I have a buddy who's always saying just focus on one thing because if you constantly trying to do this and that you'll never get anywhere. I understand that but in my mind I can merge a few skills together. For example, web design with photography and video. Writing with podcasting. So I'm curious to get your opinion on this. Is this too much or just focus on one thing?

    • @PhilipVanDusen
      @PhilipVanDusen  5 років тому +1

      KGR- I agree. Focus but with some breadth. yes, you can spread yourself too thin - and become known for nothing in particular. But if your work centers on a specific "theme" and that theme is sufficiently narrow - than having a number of ways to express it (writing, podcasting, video) is not a bad thing and is actually a way to capture a larger audience by leveraging the many personally preferred ways people have of consuming content.

    Wow. Do you have to have a video blog in order to be successful?

    • @PhilipVanDusen
      @PhilipVanDusen  6 років тому +4

      No but if you can, it is important to develop some sort of content to share, it could be writing, illustration, a blog, instagram photos, "trend" videos (LOL), it could be new fonts, or app code. You need to try to establish yourself as an expert in whatever you do.

    • @PhilipVanDusen
      @PhilipVanDusen  6 років тому +1

      ibrahim, You got to prioritize. Think about the things that will have the greatest impact on your business and do those. You can't do everything and be everywhere. That would drive anyone crazy. And burn anyone out. Build your practice and activities slowly - add one thing at a time.

    Let's be 100% REAL (because reality matters and YOU matter) - I absolutely appreciate all of the input being given here - it is very inspiring - and while I agree that doing ALL of what is suggested here actually can lead to "success" - there is a high probability that, in a short while, or in the long run, subscribing to all that is suggested here will lead you straight into the arms of burn out. Burn out is not success, no matter how much success you've attained. Running this kind of frenetic operation, you will be lucky if you still even ENJOY, or want to do the work you procure. Remember, no matter what, work is work, it is not life - but what is being outlined here will ensure WORK will become your WHOLE life. Good luck with relationships and your overall health on this treadmill. There is no mention here of how much time will be taken from all of your marketing and social media efforts once you find yourself doing the ACTUAL work you land - and that reality will result in a sag in your future income. Often you can't work AND market all at the same time - income making will ALWAYS trump fishing for new work. Here is the reality, VERY FEW people have all the skills, brains, ability, personality, business savvy and constitution it takes to succeed beyond basic sustenance living in art these days. Sorry... like I said, reality matters and YOU matter. I've run my own graphic design and illustration studio professionally for 25 years, I have been moderately successful, in the good old days I raised 3 kids and paid a mortgage for 12 years (until the economy exploding multiple times, wiping out my clients and prospects and tanking my business and driving me to bankruptcy and foreclosure). A creative life/career has a lot of great rewards (don't get me wrong) but on the whole it is lonely - it is draining - it can be scary as hell - it can be a thankless hand to mouth struggle - and simply running all the basics of a business while only having yourself to motivate yourself day after day after day is hard enough - then there are the inevitable clients that can suck the remaining life out of you. Times have changed radically - 20 years ago I would have been the biggest champion of going out on your own creatively because people needed creative services and no one was strip-mining the industry and the internet hadn't turned your skills into a commodity ... now... all I can say is, best of luck to you, and, REALLY consider doing something else for a living - save your creative side for yourself, for pleasure, maybe just occasional or additional income - but NOT as your main source of income. Art has been my life ALL of my life... it was my passion and my dream... I worked hard and I achieved a glimpse of success... these days I'm not sure I can make it stretch another 6 months... and there is no unemployment check waiting to carry me for a couple months when I fold up shop and have to find new employment (as a 50 year old)... that is not glamorous, it is not exciting... that is terrifying.

    • @PhilipVanDusen
      @PhilipVanDusen  5 років тому

      Hey Matt, Thanks for your thoughtful and passionate response. Obviously no one can do ALL of these suggestions - at all - much less perfectly. I feel you my friend - I've been in this industry 25+ years also and it is not for the faint of heart - and it's not as easy as it used to be to make a living in it as it used to be. I made an incredible salary as a senior creative executive in-house at a couple major corporations and worked with dozens more as clients at global agencies. Going it alone is a tough road. Burn out is a real thing. I had the most major burn-out of my career about 5 years ago. You have to strive for some sort of balance in your life. It's not easy, but it is also not impossible, although some times it may seen like it is. Cheers to you and thanks for watching and commenting! Hope to see you back in the comments again.

    #1) It's all your fault. #2) Be everywhere at once. #3) Never try to win an argument. #4) You are very self-centered. #5) Unless he knows who you are, you don't exist.
    #6) Once you gain people's trust, ask them to buy shit from you. #7) Same as #4. #8) Talk + Communicate (but remember #3). #9) WTF do handcuffs have to do w/ consistency??
    #10) Same as #8-Communicate. #11) Be yourself (This might interfere w/ #12). #12) Be Interesting (This might interfere w/ #11).
    #13) Fear is a sign you're on the right track (If someone pulls a gun on you in an alleyway, don't worry, you're on the right track. #14) Teach (hopefully not this).

      Suebynn, You have come to the right place, and you have chosen the right career. To be a CD you have to be an expert at the design part, but you also have to work at people skills, communication, writing, finance, budgeting planning and project management. If you start off your career knowing that the skill sets you will need are very broad - you have a real competitive advantage over your peers! Keep watching and best of luck! ~Philip

      Philip VanDusen And may i ask you one more question? Right now i'm major in communication studying ads. Would it be possible to study design by myself?? Ive never done it before and im 20. Feels like im already late..But i really wanna try..

      First of all, you're not late. Get that out for your head right now. Colonel Sanders STARTED Kentucky Fried Chicken as a retirement job and in 7 years it was the #1 franchise in the world. I started design at 32. Up until then I as a fine artist/professor. Can you study design by yourself? Short answer, yes. But if you are study communication many many people do dual majors or take a lot of design electives. But there are so many online training opportunities for free, UA-cam, Skillshare, you can go far in your studies by just watching learning and practicing.
