You did a lovely job of hand stripping and explaining the process. Dog looks very good. What a sweet breed.
I have a Chihuahua -Terrier rescue and I think he is a Border Terrier mix, same type of face and personality. The hair does not look like it needs hand stripping, but he does have a dense undercoat so the Furminator undercoat rake was used and it took out a lot of dead hair. The top coat looks fine though, funny. You did a very nice job on the dog's face. It looks clean and well defined. Thank you!
Please do not add music to any demo videos, it is so hard on the ears. It addles my brain and stresses me out to have another level of noise over the voice when I am concentrating. Not everyone likes music with demos.
My Fred is 12 now, arthritic hands cause a prob stripping, but I love the prime time with him, even though he's a bit grumpy and temperamental nowadays.
So, thanks to all you professional groomers who've taught me some new tricks.

I understand handstripping to get a desired look but isn't it a bit contradictory for the show ring because the wire coat helps shed water, protect the dog from sticks, thorns etc. When they are running through woods or even fighting with vermin. Other breeds try to remove undercoat instead of outer coat. How did this come about, to strip off the outer coat?

Border Terriers have this cool thing where their outer coat naturally sheds when it's ready. Back in the day, these little guys would practically groom themselves by running through bushes, letting the branches strip away loose hairs.
Now, just like many other breeds, there's a gap between a show coat and a pet trim. Show dogs get more frequent grooming, resulting in a layered wiry coat, about 1/4 to 1 inch long.
But for everyday pet, since they're not getting pampered as often, their coat gets a bit blown, and all that wiry goodness is ready to come out at the same time, revealing the soft undercoat.
When I saw that title I was afraid it would be a 3 hour video! I never had the patience to strip my girl, I just shaved her and she actually looks OK. BTs are wonderful dogs, except for that grooming issue.
Nothing wrong with clipping if that what works for you! They are a wonderful breed ❤️
Hi, how long does it take you to hand strip a border terrier? We've just got ours back from the groomer and we're very worried that they've lied and just clipped her rather than stripped her.
Hello 👋 It generally takes 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on the coat condition. However, you can tell by checking the coat. The wiry, top layer would have been stripped to reveal the soft undercoat. On the other hand, if the coat has been clipped, the wiry coat will still be there but cut down very evenly.
Maggie looks so beautiful after you've stripped her, amazing! I'm in the USA (Cleveland, Ohio) and have been considering this breed, but I've been concerned about the stripping since I like that shorter look. Is this something I could learn to do myself at home? I had a Parson Russell Terrier with a broken coat and was easily able to manage that, no stripping for the most part. Can't blame Maggie for lavishing you with kisses!
Hi Randy! Thank you! I love this breed, I think they are a great dog, they have so much personality. Hand Stripping would definitely be the best option as if you clip the hair, it will get thicker and you may not achieve the tight finish that stripping gives.
It is something you can do at home, you can maybe ask your local groomer to teach you too. 🤍
How long does handstripping take overall from start to finish?
This particular groom took me 2.5 hours if I remember correctly. First time visitors I generally book 3 hours 🐾
How often should they be stripped and when should it be done first? My Border Terrier is 4mo old. Thanks!

The first groom can be done at around 6 months and, for a pet coat, they are generally groomed 3 to 4 times per year 🐾

Do you bathe and brush prior to stripping the dog?
Hey!!
No, no bathing, and stripping should be performed on a coat that's not freshly cleaned.
Brushing is good, prior to stripping, make sure the coat is free from knots and mats, as this will ensure a smoother process.
To begin, apply a light dusting of chalk powder, gently brush through the coat, and then commence with the hand stripping.

I really want one of these dogs, but I don't know that I have the patience or ability to do this hand-stripping. I wonder how much it costs to have someone else to do it.
They are lovely doggies! Maintenance costs really varies but, as a breed, they tend to be lower maintenance in respect to other breeds 🐾 I would ask local groomers if they do hand stripping and their costs 😀
