Hi there! I have a pet Scottie that I would like to start hand stripping, his coat has become very fluffy and I’d like to restore the wiry top coat. Do you have an particular tips for that? Thanks!
Hello and very sorry for the late reply. As you may have discovered from the video, if your puppy was never clipped then YES you can start to handstrip. But if you have clipped more than once then it is NO you cannot handstrip. By then the fur's double attributes are fully lost and it cannot be recovered.
This is really interesting. If you are not showing your dog, and you prefer a nice natural wiry coat, can you just comb your dog weekly ? And then just trim the beard and the skirt when it gets too long ? Many thanks for your answer 😍
Good question! In the natural habit Scotties would brush against trees in an effort to remove dead hairs. A kind of self-handstrip. Some owners, notably President FDR of the USA, kept their Scottie with long hair. But in summer it can get too much for them. So clipping or ideally handstripping is preferred. Let us know how you get on and send us a photo!
Hi Angie. Apols for delayed response. Combing alone will not do the job. Combing is encouraged to straighten out the hairs and fix knots. But that is like the foundation work and would still require handstripping or clipping.
What would happen if a pet scottie was handstriped short all over would the smomack get wire hair coat to then or would the dog grow bald? I have a sealyham i tried to handstrip him a little bit but I give up cause he keeps faling asleep so I will probably have to have a profesional do it :)
We can't really comment for other terriers like Sealyham. But for Scotties handstripping does not make them bald. In fact handstripping helps to invigorate hair growth. Good luck.
Thank you .

@ thank you so much! Unfortunately he was clipped by groomers and I was not aware at the time that this would happen to his coat :(
