Hi. I loved your tutorial! I just adopted a terrier mix and he's a sweetie. When I adopted, I was told to hand strip him. I was clueless. Thanks to you, I now have a much better idea of how to proceed. Thanks so much! Ruth Ann Struble
Thanks for a great and informative video. I live in the USA and it's very hard to find a groomer where I live who is willing to spend the time it takes to hand strip. I have 2 Borders I have stripped myself for years but you gave me some new ideas, like the chalk block, which seem like they'll make the whole job much easier in the future. The one thing I do that you didn't mention was using stripping stones, especially if the coat is totally blown. Seems to go faster to start off with, and then like you, I prefer using my fingers for the rest.
I think you did a great job and you gave me a good laugh. I've been hand stripping my Border for the last 3 years and thanks to tutorials like yours it gets easier every time. Thank you
For weeks I have been preparing and educating myself on how to strip a terrier - I will be getting a puppy next week and it was so hard to find a video on how stripping is done exactly. THANK YOU for such a great and informative video! You make it look so easy. I thought I would need tools, but the fingers will do. Thanks again!
I am getting a border terrier soon and have been finding out tips for looking after/training/grooming etc. This is a really clear demonstration of hand stripping - much appreciated video - thanks, Jodie.
great video my groomer only strips the body of my border and cuts everywhere else to save time after watching your video I've had the confidence to strip her everywhere myself and save lots of money in the process thanks a million xx
I thought it was wonderful - - a daunting task. My son just got a rescue Cairn and I am sure had no idea this would be involved. Thank you for sharing your expertise!
Your video has really helped me over the last few days. I have 2 border terriers who normally go to the groomers but finances are tight at the moment. To make it more manageable I stripped part of them every day over 4 days and now they look as handsome as ever considering they will be 13 in March and 12 in July!
I found this very informative, I have a border and was not aware you could strip around the eyes, to be honest, I have only done it to my dog maybe 5 or 6 times. And just so you know, it wasn't boring at all, Thank You ;)
Hallo, was ist mit dem Bauch und dem Geschlechtsteil? Alles von Hand gezupft oder auch geschnitten? Mein Cairn Terrier ist 1 Jahr und er wehrt sich sehr bei mir
Thank you for this video. the best one i could find for actually showing how to strip a dog. just got a wire fox terrier puppy. when should i begin stripping him? i just tried a little piece because i was curious if it would come out as easily as it looks like it would and sure enough it did! he is 9 weeks old. Thanks again!! also what is the name of the metal tool you used near his rear end so i can try to find one.
looks chilly outside, we leave this till the summer normally as ours seems to feel the cold weather. You got a very well behaved border, seems to enjoy it :)
I'm finishing my dog groomers Ci and Guikds Coul you tell me when grooming white coated dogs what are thegrooming issues due to lack of melanin in the coat? I'd very much appreciate your views. Thanks for an interesting video Elaine
Awesome video! I don't have a terrier, but I have a PBGV that requires hand stripping. I've had her for a month, and have been looking for a video demo on hand stripping this breed. Haven't been able to find much that goes into as much detail as your video. Her coat is completely grown out and her legs are long and curly, I know she will have to be stripped down and then in about six weeks or so her coat should be grown back out to the scruffy look this breed has without looking like a furr ball. My question is, are there any similarities to the stripping of your terrier and the stripping of a PBGV as far as the technique goes?
+Gretchen Geer sweet breed, I love PBGVs! I have never groomed one, though, and do not know the grooming practises, so I can only assume it is the same. Maybe you could contact the breed club or her breeder to double check? Good luck!
Does it cause the dog pain? Your dog is a sweetie! Thank you! My husband brought home a puppy we named Shatzi- a terrier of unknown heritage. Looks close to the Norfolk terrier with the folded ears. Big thanks for the beginning smiles! I was a stripper in the old style printing shop. We used very thin opaque tape to correct the page negative to keep the paint clean! Regards…
question: i have what most people believe to be a border terrier/wire hair dog mix. he's border sized (less than 15 lbs), and when i strip him his hair doesn't get any shorter than normal. he does seem to enjoy it when i hand strip him as best i can, nine times out of ten, he gets really annoyed. my question is, how much stripping is really required?
+Erica Sebald Hi, its hard for mixed breeds as it is difficult to know what coat type (or combination of coat types) they have. If stripping is working and his coat isn't too long, keep at it, at the end of the day he won't mind if he looks a little scruffy, as long as you arent worried about it. If you prefer, you can use scissors around his feet, ears, eyes and stomach so that the coat is a little more manageable. I think it's is just down to trial and error. Good luck!
Hi Jodie!! Would you please tell me when is it a good time to start stripping a terrier puppy (mine is a westie)? I've been told I should have started since he was 2 months, but now he's 8 months and I don't know if it's too late already...
+Maite Ramirez no, it's never too late, I once stripped a 9 year old dog that had never been groomed before. It's easer if you go asap, not for the grooming necessarily, but to socialise him and give him a positive grooming experience so that he won't be nervous or aggressive towards the groomer. Have fun!
Ive saved your video, it’s so informative and so good! Thank you!! Although I have a question, my cairn terrier is 5 1/2 and a groomer has told me that his hair is ‘going soft’ and it is too sensitive for him and he needs to be clipped. Is this right? Can their hair go ‘soft’? Is it painful for him? I’ve tried a few spots and it’s coming out quite easily..but it’s taking ages for me as I’m not trained!
Your video has been a great help to us with our Border. The thing that confuses me is when to do it? When I try, I get big handfuls of hair, so assume he is ready for his first strip. He is 11 months old and starting to look a wee bit scruffy. Do you think he is due a strip? It certainly looks like it will be a massive job as he struggles almost all the time, unlike your well behaved boy
Hi, thanks for your feedback! If the fur is coming out easily, without too much tugging, it should be ready. Lots of young dogs (and a few adults!) are a bit fussy when it comes to stripping, so you have to make it as pleasant as possible by rewarding them every few minutes, when they're being good, with little treats. Good luck and let us know how you get on!
+Jodie Forbes I just got back from work and thought I would have a good go. I am getting lots of hair out, but don't seem to be actually making any headway. His hair is just as long! Am I still to early? He is 11 months now, so i would have thought he would be easily ready for his first strip.
No, they won't shed the wire coat fully without being stripped. Naturally, when hunting, their coat would get caught in brambles and branches, pulling it out, but that doesn't tend to happen to most BTs nowadays. You'll know when the coat is ready because it'll be 'blown', meaning the long wiry bits have parted and you can see the darker and softer undercoat.
+Galcé They should be, as long as they are walked regularly (at least an hour a day should do it, off lead if possible) and aren't going to be left along for long periods of time, so they don't get bored. They are adaptable little dogs, but with tonnes of energy!
+Gamer Jay A Border terrier needs long walks almost every day. People who don't enjoy walking should not buy a dog at all but instead consider buying a goldfish or a spider.
+Gamer Jay They need a lot of exercise and they shed quite a lot actually. We have hair all over the place and don't let him in the bedroom because of this!
Thank-you!! This is the best video I have seen on hand stripping dogs. I will be getting my Wire Fox Terrier Puppy in a few weeks. How old should the puppy be before you start hand stripping?
Hi Jody, my border is 11 months old and we have stripped her but am unsure what to do with her beard. It gets tangled and a bit smelly, what do you suggest??
+Ann Husmann Sorry for replying so late, have you tried using scissors or thinning scissors around the beard? That will just make it more manageable and prevent too much food getting tangled in it, making it smell. Does she have okay teeth? Bad smelling beards may mean she has an oral infection such as gum disease, so if her teeth have a lot of plaque on, you might want to pop her down to the vets for a dental de-scaling. Hope this helps!
Ah this is so funny 😂😂 I don't have a terrier but would a puppy coat be Ok for Nessa? She is a bichon cross shih tzu and she is really curly. We would be asked to get a bichon cut or a puppie cut, which would suit her coat best? xx (She has a puppie cut in the picture 👌)
Stripping doesn't hurt because the hair is dead. It pulls out very easily but you can use scissors in sensitive places such as the ears . To tell when a dog is ready you just need to pull a few hairs and they just. One out in your fingers. Most if not all dogs are very happy to be rid of the itchy dead coat and start acting all daft in happiness!
You are awesome Kate! I loved the stripping video of Arch. Very helpful as I am going to begin stripping my boy Dash tomorrow. I've done it before but learned a few new tricks from you. Thanks again!!
Great video. Impressed to see how calm your dog is while you're doing the stripping job. I'll better do another try on my own border terrier. He is looking like a male lion these days:)
+Georgina wills Sorry I didnt reply sooner! I bet you love your new puppy, just make sure you train him/her from the start and make sure he/she's well socialised with other dogs, people and pets! Good luck!
Perhaps try stripping them when they are relaxed on your lap in the evening, otherwise you could invest in a grooming table with straps to stop the dog fidgeting too much. Good luck!
98461919849848198198 what on earth are you on about. If you don't own border terriers then you won't know that their coat is naturally meant to be stripped. It comes out easily and without hurting the dog. In fact they feel much better after it has been done. Let's put two fur coats on you and them make you run and jump around and see how it feels...idiot.
Why not use clippers on a terrier instead of stripping? Just wondering as this seem very time consuming and I would think some dogs would not like all that pulling.
You're right, some dogs don't stand for it and will let you know! But stripping means the coat keeps its wiry texture and keeps the dog insulated. My girl, Hazel had to be clipped a while back for medical reasons, and she was constantly cold, if it rained the water would soak into her coat, whereas with a wiry coat, water just rolls off it. Once a dog is clipped it's extremely hard to get the coat back, too. It look smarter and keeps the dog more weather-proof, in short.
Archie is the spit of my Barney.I take Barney to a lady I know who does the big job and I try to keep on top of it when I take him out on walks. He is as patient as your Archie.
Nick Pennington You're starting to really creep me out.. stop following every move I make on YT and leaving me hate on one video then complimenting me on the next.
bahahaha... love it... I'm learning to Strip my border terrier. She's 6 now, I've been honestly trying to do it for the last 2yrs but I haven't learned fully, I can do some of it but not all. :(
Thanks so much! I have taken my dog to be groomed and watched the hand stripping, but have never had the nerve to try it myself. I think I will give it a shot next time. She's a squirmer, so it might be a challenge :)
That's a great video, thank you very much. It made me feel confident to have a go myself (his first strip) and my little pickle is looking extra cute now!

Hi
We are soon to be the proud owners of a Border X mini shaunzer pup, would the same grooming apply as a standard border groom ?
Regards Ben

Hi, what a great tutorial, can you show what you do for legs and underneath - scissors/clip? 😊
Hi JODY have tried diamatious earth instead of the chalk it also does for fleas email. ETC. LOOK IT UP ON GOOGLE. IT'S GOOD STUFF.
looks chilly outside, we leave this till the summer normally as ours seems to feel the cold weather. You got a very well behaved border, seems to enjoy it :)
Hi Jodie. Fantastic video, thanks. This has really helped me, as I am brushing up on my dog grooming skills.
Hey Jodie, do you think you could whip a training video, for a young border pup, that teaches it to not be too wild?
I like it, my question is the chault.. I have never seen the block form. where can that be found?
You can find blocks at many equestrian shops, pet shops and big dog shows, but if all else fails I have seen it on eBay before.
Thanks
I'm finishing my dog groomers Ci and Guikds Coul you tell me when grooming white coated dogs what are thegrooming issues due to lack of melanin in the coat? I'd very much appreciate your views. Thanks for an interesting video Elaine
Fantastic video! I quite enjoyed the comic relief.
Great video. The most informative I have seen. Thanks! Gonna give it a try now. Wish me luck! 😁

***** ps i know you may not respond, i'm just frustrated with the lack of instructions for mutts!! thank you for making lovely videos.
+Erica Sebald Border and Wirehaired Terriers have a soft undercoat so the hair won't get shorter. Stripping simply exposes the undercoat.
+Erica Sebald Hi, its hard for mixed breeds as it is difficult to know what coat type (or combination of coat types) they have. How do you know which fur to pull out?
Tulipsaki whatever comes out when u pull but only pull the long fur out
Awesome video!!! Thank you for teaching us.
What's not to love about a Border? Our Molly is our sweet princess. Thanks for sharing this video.

Hey! Love your videos! I have a fairly smart yorkie! I love the trick were the dog stands on its hind legs and inbetween your legs! :)
Fantastic video, and excellent groom :)
Thank-you!! This is the best video I have seen on hand stripping dogs. I will be getting my Wire Fox Terrier Puppy in a few weeks. How old should the puppy be before you start hand stripping?

When Stiriping a boarder Terrier does it Hurt them ? is there other breeds that has to be strip like that .
My dog does not stand still though!

Not good for their coat. They need to be stripped for the hair to grow in properly
