Use a Swiss Army Knife as a Compass

- A compass is a great survival tool. This video shows two methods of using a mini Swiss Army Knife as an emergency compass. Any 58mm Victorinox SAK with a "combo tool" should work.
Here's a LIST of them:
Bladeless
Caddy Plus
Drifter
Jetsetter
Manager
Midnight Manager
Midnight MiniChamp
Minichamp (II)
Rally
Rambler
Rogue
Rover
Vagabond
Older (pre-1985?) SAKs with a fish scaler may also work but I didn't actually test this.
I'm a bit of a Science Nerd here, thanks for putting up the invaluable text in your VID's as well, superbly done my Friend!
The larger knives often have a pin-hole for a pin under the corkscrew and one could store a magnetized pin in there.
I have bought a SAK recently for EDC purpose
Originally, I just consider it as a casual tools
but youtuber in the SAK field really teach me a lot and lighten my passionate on SAK!
It is very hard to see such kind, helpful and selfless attitude in youtube nowadays with the fact the youtube have become a business platform instead of really sharing their daily life.
You really attracted me to absorb more survival tips. Keep it up bro!
Thanks. Tell your friends. My only reward is increased viewership to boost my ego. LOL.
Thanks for all the great comments everyone.
I like this new format with "flashbacks" of previous projects
Just the performance on all scissors is why I'm a huge fan of Victorinox. Love my Minichamps midnight manager. i would definitely use a floatation device like ones here to protect the led light.
Excellent information !!!!
i love your videos. you are so creative. Keep up the great work.
While I question my ability to pull this off, at least I learned that my midnite manager@work has a magnetized Phillip's head!
Rub any piece of steel over a magnet and it should become magnetized. I just bought a Lansky Blade Medic on Amazon (I'm a newbie multitool owner so I'm starting out basic and cheap) and now just found out that it has a magnet to hold the diamond sharpening rod down; so I rubbed some of my mini screwdrivers over it and they became megnetized, to hold the tiny screws, if ever needed. :) Of course you can rub a tiny pin or sewing needle against a magnet, then use the pin / needle to be the compass. Float it on a small leaf in water and see.
I like the DIY indoor pond, very inventive. Thanks
We call these "bucket hats" or "boonie hats" if they have a large, flat brim. Out of curiosity are the terms the same on your side of the pond?
MeZillch Thanks for the reply we have boonie hats over here as well just the fact you filled it with water and made an improvised water source is the bit I found great. Thanks
Another fascinating video. I've been wearing my 'Mezilch paracord bracelet' every day for a couple of years now, and I have my own version of your Altoid survival kit in my car. You're a good 'idea man,' Mike.
Thanks.
OH MY GOD I'M SO GLAD YOU'RE BACK I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS. (sorry for the all caps)
Awesome wisdom! Victorinox should add it to they're official wiki page of SAK uses! 👍😎
Thanks. . . . Psst, there's also a "keychain survival SAK" coming soon.
EXCELENT VIDEO!!!!!!!,,,,,Love that youre making Vic videos,,,,,very good ideas !!!!Thanks a lot for share all your creations,,,GRacias Saludos!!!!
While less-a-few-tools, the Rambler is a good still-in-production alternative to the Vegabond.
If it loses it's magnetism, you can re-magnetize it. Run it along a different, strong magnet to re-energize
Great video!
nice trick!
Brilliant
I want the spaceship that flew off the Altoids can!
It's also a bottle opener for your keychain, I bought on Amazon: "Rebel Alliance Star Wars Millenium Falcon Metal Bottle Opener"
Great stuff. Tried many times to 'like' this video, but it won't respond. Atm I'm using my phone. Will try again via laptop, ASAP. Hope life is good. Best wishes from Scarborough, England
Hello Friend! I want to congratulate you on your channel, there are lots of cool videos. I'm following you here from Brazil. Big hug friend!
Thanks
Cool !!
you made me look at my "sak" collection to see what was magnetized, only 2 of mine (out of six) were. How about magnetizing the tweezers!
Yes, in fact they may already have a strong enough pre-magnetized condition to spin on a low mass platform (a jar lid like I used may be a bit heavy). But as has been pointed out you need to determine which end is North and which is South before you can use your tool.
its much easier to magnetize a straight pin and keep it in the pin slot, float it on a small leaf
Magnetized straight pins don't hold their charge forever. Over the months/years it dissipates on its own which is accelerated by heat and vibration from the external environment.
How did I never think of using it as invisible thread duh
With the SAK "plus" scales, it would make sense if you (or Victorinox) could magnetize the sharp end of the stick pin to be multipurposed for a compass needle? I wonder if it's possible to magnetize ONLY the sharp end without magnetizing the entire needle? Good vid!
Yes. Although anyone can magnetize metal by stroking it with a magnet, the magnetic force will be weak compared to what a manufacturer can accomplish with large, heavy machines. It is indeed possible to magnetize light weight metal, such as needles and pins, so that when mounted on a lightweight float they will act as a compass.
As I demonstrated here: ua-cam.com/video/MjLr0aYId5o/v-deo.html
When you make any type of compass, how do you know which end is north? Obviously you can be confident it will align itself axially with north/south, but nothing guarantees which end of the, say sewing needle, will become the south pole and which will become the north pole once it becomes magnetized. It seems everyone assumes the "pointy end" will point north, and they take it for granted, but I don't understand which law of physics guarantees that or anything. Also when you did this why did you deploy the multi tool, wouldn't this have worked just as well with it remaining inside the knife body or were you worried about the steel of the other tools shielding the magnetic part from the earths magnetic field?
I've tested several (~4?) Victorinox SAKs and the magnetic field is always the same: the screwdriver tip aims North,. but you are correct that when one MAKES their own magnet, rather than using a store bought one like the Victorinox SAK, they don't really know which direction is N and which is S, all they know is the orientation of the two poles. Victorinox magnetizes the tip so the screwdriver holds onto screws better and it would seem they don't apply a random magnetic field but rather a specific one. Thanks for your excellent question, you made a good point.
Yes, I deployed the tool because I feared having it partly trapped inside the steel cage, the closed knife that is, would hamper the performance.
you know, you could magnetize the small needle that you can put in / already is in your victorinox, so you basically already have a compass on every model
My testing has found that the weak magnetism a consumer can apply to a pin themselves will dissipate in storage over time: ua-cam.com/video/MjLr0aYId5o/v-deo.html
Do you have experience on how long the magnetic field will last if the Ramber is used as a keychain rather than pocket carry ? This alone is reason to upgrade from the Classic model. Very cool video !!
Thanks. Sorry, I don't have good data on how permanent the magnetization which Victorinox applies at the factory lasts. I suppose it depends on environmental exposure to other magnetic fields, perhaps even the weak one from the Earth if stored in a fixed position for long periods. Also keep in mind it is only a modest amount of magnetism meant to pick up light weight screws, so not enough to hold the weight of the product to a metal ceiling or anything like that.
Will this work with the Midnight Manager? Its a rambler + light and ballpoint pen. Will thise additions disrupt its ability to be a compass?
I'm pretty sure any 58mm SAK with a Philips head screwdriver tipped combo tool will work, but you can easily test if the tip of yours is magnetic by seeing if it will pick up staples or paper clips.
Um, I think a better way is to use the tweezer, cuz it is magnetised. Btw good work! Keep it up!
The tweezers are light weight so their low mass is easy to rotate however if they are lightly magnetized it is by mistake, Victorinox does not purposefully magnetize them like they do the combo tool, plus North and South aren't labelled whereas the tip of the Philips screwdriver is always points North.
Any ferrous blade will move your compass, whether or not it is magnetized. SS (when it is the non-magnetic variety) will not.
Wont it work if suspended by a thread?
How do you make the Paracord bracelet
Here: ua-cam.com/video/eTVI0FYdSvQ/v-deo.html
What about the tactical tin?
Tactical Tool Kit Tin coming soon.
If you had long hair, I would assume a stand would work for that second method?
I would think any long, thin, mono-filament would work, yes. The way to test is to suspend a comparable weight with no magnetic field and once it comes to rest then rotate it around 180 degrees. If it stays there you are good to go but if the twist acts like a spring and it turns back to where it came from then you have a problem which may bias your compass reading.
Hahaha so now your a novice magician ta' boot. Great video kid. Do you dabble in full on bug out bag stuff... Natural progression? Maybe not.
I have no full on bug out bag. . . . .yet. I think about it though and every now and then order something on line and throw it in the cardboard box labelled "some day I will make this a proper kit" when the gizmo arrives.
Why all of the MacGyver stuff? Just bring a damn compass, lol.
You carry a compass on your person every day you walk out the door?
Just carry a metal paper clip
could you just use your hair?
Maybe. I don't have hair though.
MeZillch yeah ok but if you do could you?
MeZillch also brilliant video as always!
A thread/hair might work but whatever is used must be fairly long or else the resistance to twisting will influence the needle pointing direction so the magnetic field of the Earth results won't be accurate enough.
MeZillch ok thank you! 😊
