  • BUY, LEASE OR FINANCE THE JEEP RENEGADE FROM OSV: bit.ly/38GqiPT
    The Jeep Renegade is a genuinely smart piece of product design, distilling Jeep's brand values into a smaller package while leaning on the smartest technology the Fiat Group has to offer. This improved version gets revised petrol engine technology, slightly smarter looks and enhanced connectivity. But as before, if you eat squirrel, own a bowling ball and call your first cousin your spouse, chances are you're going to hate it. Otherwise, read on.
    Background
    Take a respected brand, a fresh and vibrant market segment and a willingness to do something different. Then create from that a product with uncompromising looks, real capability and clever design. The result you'd get certainly wouldn't be ordinary. It wouldn't please traditionalists. No, in automotive terms, what you'd get would be something like this, the Jeep Renegade.
    At its original launch here in 2015, news that this Renegade was almost entirely based on Fiat's 500X had Jeep die-hards choking on their beer. These people needed to allow for the fact that much had been done with these underpinnings in creation of a tougher, more rugged and very different product. It's certainly one that's attracted widespread interest and now accounts for over 70% of Jeep's UK sales. It's achillies heel was previously an ancient couple of petrol engines, which have now thankfully been dumped as part of the changes made to this smarter, more sophisticated facelifted model.
    Driving Experience
    The key news with this improved Renegade lies with the changes made beneath the bonnet. The old-tech entry-level normally aspirated 1.6-litre petrol engine of the original model has been replaced by a much more efficient 120hp 1.0-litre unit. And the old inefficient 1.4-litre 134hp MultiAir petrol 1.4 makes way for a new 1.3-litre powerplant, available in 150 and 180hp guises. Ideally, you want to try and stretch to the 1.3 because the base 1.0-litre unit doesn't really have enough pulling power to shove the Renegade along with much conviction. The automatic gearbox that goes with the lower-powered version of the 1.3-litre engine isn't especially slick-changing; the uprated 9-speed auto 'box that goes with the 178hp 1.3 is better. As before, if you're looking at a diesel, there's a 120bhp 1.6-litre Mjet unit or a 2.0-litre Mjet option with either 140 or 170bhp. You'll need the 2.0-litre Mjet diesel if you want your car with 4WD.
    The car's 4x4 system hasn't changed, incorporating a rear axle disconnect system that switches seamlessly between two and four-wheel-drive for reduced energy loss when 4x4 capability isn't needed, improving fuel efficiency in the process. But the Renegade is more at home on the highway, where refinement is surprisingly good, despite the relatively bluff aerodynamics.
    Design and Build
    The Renegade has always sold on its styling - and it still will. There are some subtle aesthetic tweaks with this revised model but the main changes lie with the adoption of LED technology for the headlamps and tail lights. As before, the squarical profile features lovely tight overhangs and some very cool detailing. What is particularly interesting is the way the design includes some very traditional Jeep design cues but isn't afraid to twist them a bit into something resolutely modern-looking. That aspect you will either love or hate.
    Cover up the badges inside the car and, yes, you would probably think you were in a Fiat product, but if you've had a look at the latest Fiat range, that's no bad thing. Jeep says that the fascia's been updated but it's difficult to see many changes apart from the improved Uconnect touchscreen infotainment system, which on top variants features a big 8.4-inch monitor. This has clear menus, sharp graphics and useful shortcut buttons, plus it comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so you can use apps from your smartphone (such as Google Maps and Waze) while driving. As for practicality, well it's a bit pinched in the back, but then that comes with the territory when you've got this little length to play with.

    I've had my Renegade Traihawk 2018 for almost a year now. No problems whatsoever! It still put a smile on my face every time I get in to drive it. And it has saved me from ordering a tow truck on a few occasions on snowy Swedish country roads.

    After owning many cars ( including some luxury brands) over the years I became old and wanted a new and cheap " do it all in all wheather family mobile". It is incredible to me that people are always moaning about those practical "cheap" cars while the snobs don't even whisper about the huge problems their 60k plus euro cars have, like Mercedes, RRovers, Bmw, etc. In 2009 I bought a brand new RR Sport and sold it at a great loss in less than a year due to multiple problems from day one of ownership. I recently got a 2018 Renegade Limited 1.3 turbo 2wd, after drivetesting many other options in the price range. The facelifted Renegade surpassed my expectations: it is very refined, comfortable at higway speed ( I can for sure say it is more quiet at 130km/h than my Infinity Fx30), it has very good visibility, the ride is very good and surefooted and the brakes blew me away- almost on par with my Brembo equiped Alfa Gta. The new 1.3 turbo is a gem: there is literally no vibration, it is veery quiet, it has 270Nm at 1800rpm to pull 1320kg and is economical ( I average 8l/100km, 80% town driving, outside town 6l/km). And there is a sense of robustness given by the extremelly stiff structure of the chassis, I didn t experience the smallest creak or rattle. At 25k euros I paid for this car in my country, what more could I want. It is a very smart and practical car, very comfortable and frugal for the money. We love itm

    Had my Renegade for a year now, still loving it. Coming from other compact european cars, it feels big and solid when driving it. And tho I have the 2wd version, i regularly take it onto rocky, steep tractor paths that would have gotten my others cars into trouble. The excellent traction control and the high ground clearance make it pretty capable.

    We have a 15 plate Renegade Limited special edition with the 1.4 turbo engine. It's been so good and only needed a set of front brake discs apart from yearly servicing. Not bad for 8 years old. We live in the remote Scottish Highlands so need ground clearance and ability to cope with lots of deep snow and road salt. It sailed through the last MOT and there is virtually no rust at all. So it is a brilliant car and we love it ! For a relatively small car , it's roomy inside and very capable. Not sure how it could be compared to a Nissan Joke ( oops sorry Juke ) totally different vehicles. !

    I've had a '16, 1.6 diesel Longitude for the past 3 years. I have loved every minute of driving it and I can't wait for the refresh. I currently get around 55 MPG on the motorway and 43-ish MPG driving around London. My current average is 49.6 over 20,000 miles! I consider this very good. Yes it could do with a bigger boot (see Compass) but I prefer to have a car that is easy to park and very good economy!
    I will probably go for the same 1.6 diesel again when I can renew, as it is very efficient. I might consider going for the Trailhawk but I have only really needed it for driving around the Swiss mountains and Italian Alps where the 2WD was barely getting me up the steep hills. But it did get me there!

    Couple of corrections
    1. The "4wd lock" only keeps it in 4wd mode. There are no locking differentials. It's all brake based traction control. The only CUV based Jeep with a locker is the Cherokee trailhawk.
    2. There is no low range gear box in the trailhawk or any other trim. The lower crawl ratio comes from a lower diff gear (4.33:1 vs 3.55:1 in the other trims) and the 9spd auto. Put it in "low" and it keeps the transmission in 1st gear.

    • @lakshmandalpadado9066
      @lakshmandalpadado9066 2 роки тому

      Miller - the Renegade has electronic traction control to distribute the torque in All wheel drive mode but also had locking differential giving instant torque to all four wheels. in lock mode. And they warn not to drive at high speed on dry tarmac because all the wheel go the same distance as the differentials are locked and cause not only the handling but also wear and tear on the gearbox. Locking isn the first gear is also a type of low range gearing. Check the trail hawk . It can go anywhere a Land cruiser can go.

    • @richardmiller1256
      @richardmiller1256 2 роки тому

      @@lakshmandalpadado9066 the only jeep model on that architecture that offers any real locking diff is the Cherokee trailhawk. The diff on the renegade is not strong enough for that use. I've been round and round with Mopar since 2018 arguing about this.

      @@lakshmandalpadado9066 not true...just look a some test with software, in many cases torque to the rear is 0% even with Lock. It only means "4WD is engaged", not a real lock. As for the "low" command, it only enables 1st gear, no low range at all. Cherokee Trailhawk has real low range and real rear differential lock, not the Renegade.

    Hello. When first generation of Renegade was launched I was impressed. A proper SUV, with rough look, spacious interiour and very good off-road capability. But now, with 2WD for the most of the range and 4x4 traction only on 2 litre diesel engine, I changed my opinion. Because I want a Jeep with turbo petrol engine and 4x4. The differences between all countries, is amazingly diverse so it seems.
    I ordered a standard 1.0 petrol sport, but it divers so much of everything I hear of it in these reviews.
    Mine does come with the old 5" screen and steel rims, unlike what you said about the updated 'english'(?) versions.
    Though it does have every safety-system there is for this model, unlike what you said.
    I noticed these differences on every other preview aswell, fe. from Italian reviews and american ones.
    I went for the sport, since it was just a replacement for my van, but I also love to make it my own, and by the mopar-possibilities, you can make it exactly like you want it. So i really didn't bother with a higher end version.
    That said, i actually do hope they will make some cheaper 4x4-versions without all those bits and pieces you'll never need.
    The Renegade made a great start and is a very unique model, making people smile and having fun with it, that's all that counts ;-)

I don't care about boot practicality. I don't care about rims, metals, led lights, adaptive cruise control, extreme steering response, motor sound, or scratchy plastic surfaces.
    What I DO care about is a roomy seating position for me as a "bigger guy" (1m85/130 kg/very wide shouldered, relatively long legs and arms) that doesn't make my shoulders rub against the side, doesn't press a hard plastic ridge into my legs, doesn't lock my left arm in between my body and the door, and doesn't make me sit like the hunchback of the Notre Dame by its "comfort seats" that require me to contort my back and neck in stress (cough, Mercedes CLA!). I don't need to be in a cocoon - i'm the kind of guy that removes the arm rests from any office chair.

    What a great review as usual your the very best at what you do…your thorough informative and honest as I believe this is going* to be my next vehicle…I’m impressed with it it’s well appointed….I’ve taken interest in the top model the fit and finish is excellent…it’s roomy enough but I think I’m going to want the full length panoramic roof I think it will add a certain ambience to what is already a well lit cabin…I’d like the 2.0 Diesel engine with great automatic gearbox wether or not that will still be available here when I’m ready to change I don’t know..we have a crazy government that seem to think electric vehicles is the way to go…I hope eventually that someone will wake up and realise they are not so green…so all I can say is well done Fiat…

    • @shankarbalan3813
      @shankarbalan3813 6 років тому +1

      I completely agree. I own a Yeti these last 7 years. It is a truly capable and practical vehicle. I ve driven a renegade for about 7-8 days recently in the South of France. It is a good vehicle. Yes. But my yeti is simply clever and simply better. It’s just that the Renegade overall feels a bit more rugged and like something that one can beat much harder without feeling guilty. However, the true apples to apples comparison between these two cars needs to be made only by someone operating each of these in the same identical conditions, not like me, who operates the Yeti day to day in harsh daily conditions in India and has only driven the Renegade when on holiday in Europe.

    • @jonm9501
      @jonm9501 5 років тому +1

      Had a 17 plate yeti which was an absolute lemon in terms of problems, constantly going back to the garage. The worst was the clutch and biting point, nearly always cut out in 2nd gear and the garage claimed it was a characteristic of the car. Absolute bulljive. Got rid of it a few months ago.

    • @James-yy4vl

      Fiat & Chrysler merged; that's why the merged company is called Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. That merger made sense- Fiat bringing it's small vehicle architecture/fuel efficient engines & expertise to the company; while Chrysler brings it's large vehicle architectures, and powerful V6/V8 engines & technology to the company. This merger truly is the "Merger of Equals" that DaimlerChrysler was SUPPOSED to be. Sharing across the entire company of designs & tech, not to mention Fiat & Chrysler designing new products/technology together. Sergio made no bones about the US side of the company (Chrysler) carrying the whole of FCA through the drawn out European recession. I look at it like this: without Fiat, Chrysler would have been no more. Yes, both Fiat & Chrysler pre-merger had much room for improvement in the overall quality department. FCA is making a serious effort to shed that image, and improve it's vehicles quality across the board. It all doesn't happen overnight- BUT the company is moving in the right direction. All new products have been significant improvements over previous models. FCA 's US market shares are continuing their climb upwards. If products like the new 2019 Ram 1500 are any indication of future FCA products & design- big things are in store for this company.
