- Is the 2020 Jeep Renegade Limited 4x4 the perfect small SUV? We reviewed the 1.3L turbo engine with the 9 speed automatic transmission. Even though this isn't the Trailhawk, we took it off road anyway to see how capable it is when the pavement ends. The Renegade has the 9 speed automatic transmission and leather. It has the new Park Assist feature and we put it to the test.
Our test vehicle had a base price of $28,745 and came to over $36,000 with options.
We also test it on road and give a detailed review of the interior along with our analysis. Watch this video before you buy a Renegade!

Renegades are by far the most attractive suvs ever made
I don't care what people say about the Renegade, I like, wife loves it, and it's an overall great vehicle for both on concrete and on the trail. Great presentation! Can't wait for your take on the Bronco whenever it launches.

Very underrated car! I had mine for 26000kms ( 2019 Limited 1.3turbo) and it drove flawless. The 1.3 turbo engine has enough grunt for every situation, the brakes are instant, and the level of refinement ( lack of interior noise and total absence of vibration) is above many high end cars that I have driven. Also the wind noise above 140km/h on Renegades equipped with accoustic glass ( Limited) is on par with many luxury sedans. Great allround car with solid feel and very refined drive. The Led headlights are also outstanding in the dark, compared to most bixenons. The steering is very quick, precise and cleverly weighted. I can honestly say that the facelifted Renegade is a bargain .
Renegades have come a long way and the 2020 model is IT. A true Jeep. I just purchased mine couple of weeks back. Just like the one in the video (Top trim, AWD, All the packs) but in Blue. They are just amazing.
Got a 2017 Renegade. Absolutely love mine. That selective 4 wheel drive is great for snowy winters, but small enough to have in the city. Perfect amount of space to lug around my music equipment. No complaints on my end. That park assist would surely come in handy though, haha!

It's really great to see someone take a "Non-Trailhawk" off-road! I have a 2016 Renegade (Dawn of Justice Edition) and it's been great for the past 80,000 kms. Now that it's paid off I've been looking at new vehicles but honestly I might just put some money into modifying my little jeep instead, lift it up a couple inches maybe add some all terrain tires, skid plates, and rock sliders and just hit the trails.
It's a capable little vehicle!
If you think 8:54 is a tight spot, you don't want to see German parking spots 🤣. However, I love this car and the video. I really want to get a Renegade.

Holy wow, Eric! Huge step up in quality. Genuinely thought this was a different channel from frame 1. Then I recognized you. High level production for sure and your energy was great too. Can tell you were into making this great. I like the passenger dash oh shit handle. That's for hangin' on tight when the driver goes over jumps, hahaha. Despite the gauges being a bit simple and plasticky looking, I kinda dig them. Oh man that dead stop acceleration was AWFUL. You still made me more interested in this rig than I expected though. Great video!

I just bought a 2021 Jeep Renegade 80th Anniversary Edition Turbo. Black on Black. Love it. Thinking of getting her lifted, maybe 3 or 4 inches, maybe slap 35’s on her too. I’ll need to buy new rims too, the 19 inch rims are too city for me.

You do not get a transfer case in thre trailhawk version. You get a lower gear ratio in the differentials. 4.33 in the trailhawk version vs the 3.73.
Got my 2019 Renegade Limited 4x4 for about a year and going to do my first off road course in a couple weeks with it. Very curious how it will perform!
I bought one of these , a LTD, in 2019 and kept in for three years whilst it was under warranty. It was made in Spain which worried me a bit, howerver the only fault in three years was a faulty outside temperature sensor which kept telling me to beware of ice when it was mid summer. The sensor is under the wing mirror. They simply changed the whole mirror, under warranty. Apart from that is was superb. Never missed a beat. I live in rural Scotland, so we had a bit of dirty trail stuff. The 4WD was excellent. The heated seats and heated steering wheel were just right for the Highlands. I traded it for a Merc ML350 whch was a heap of junk. I should have stayed with the Jeep.

Great review. 36 grand is kinda steep. For the same price or cheaper you can get the Forester Limited or Touring spec which is the highest spec Forester bigger space all round. And it has all time AWD. The 2.5L Boxer engine wont suffer from turbo lag. But not many are a fan of the CVT.
I daily drive the Crosstrek that has the CVT and it pretty smooth. Under normal driving the gearbox is very silent. Only under a dig will the gearbox strain. As well as the engine as i have the puny 1.6L version.
There were 2 or 3 recalls for Subaru to replace some parts which i did send my car back to the dealer for the replacement. But no complains. Still missed my 2004 2.0XT Forester Turbo but have to kill it because the gearbox was shot and the replacement wasnt cheap.
At $36K it's fully loaded. That said, I've seen these at dealers for around $30K right now. The Forester is great.
Yeah this def isn't what I would pick for $36K, but I also don't think it's the worst option.
You can get pretty good deals on them, mine was 36k and I only paid 29k

How do you afford 4 Wranglers? They are around £40 k each in the UK....
The wrangler is actually smaller (2 door). Just the engine is smaller.

I'd caution anytime thinking of buying one. My 2.4L engine seized at 14,000 with a fresh dealership oil change. At 30,000 the transmission failed. The struts will bend super easy too. I have been in the Jeep service center more then 20 times.
Also there is now a class action lawsuit for the 2.4L Tigershark engine because of oil warning failures and excess oil consumption. Jeep says 1 quart every 750 miles after 50,000 miles is "normal". Buyer beware.

The grill and headlights are awesome but those taillights bug me
taillights design is inspired on the fuel tank used by the US Army during wwII. It's also a place where a hidden easter egg is located, infact inside you can find the iconic grille of the Willis / Renegade Jeep.
As much as I love Renegade reviews, you have a Huge error at 2:30. The Renegade Trailhawk does not have a Transfer Case & 4WD Low Range as a traditional 4X4 does...ie Wrangler, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee. It has a 4Low 'simulator', (Jeep's words, not mine), which just locks the vehicle into 1st Gear (with a better gear ratio over non-Trailhawk variants 21.5:1 vs 20:1). Trailhawk has different front & rear bumpers for improved approach & departure angles, 'Rock' mode on the dial, skid plates and Falken Wildpeak HT's and yes, a slight lift over other models. Anyone looking for a Renengade should look to the 1.3L Turbo for improved performance and reliability. Thanks!

I don't think tailhawk has a transfer case, it just locks in 1st gear, you can do the same with limited model, just put it in manual mode haha
You're correct. The Renegade Trailhawk doesn't have a transfer case. What it does have is a fairly low first gear of 4.70:1 in combination with a 4.33:1 final drive ratio and that's how you get the 20:1 (21:1 in models later than mine, which have a slightly lower final drive gearing) "crawl ratio." The use of a hydraulic automatic, with a torque converter to give 2:1 torque multiplication off idle, helps mask this "crawl ratio" to a degree, as does the vehicle's relatively light (by modern standards) curb weight.
In normal driving, the transmission on my Renegade Trailhawk starts off in second gear, which at 2.84:1 is more like the first gear in a traditional automatic transmission.
Where I go, it's the gearing that prevents me from taking my Renegade Trailhawk everywhere I used to go in the TJ that I had. It's not the tiny tires, independent suspension all the way around, or lack of locking differentials. If the thing had a 40:1 low range, it would take me pretty much everywhere I want to go off pavement. Even 30:1 would work.
I "sky" a lot of tires in the Renegade, but the brake-based torque vectoring works well enough to make this inconsequential and allows those in contact with the ground to keep the thing putzing along. From the factory, you get a 30 degree approach, 25.5 degree breakover, and 34 degree departure angle, and that's why the weenie little 27.5 inch tall tires work okay.

That’s a ridiculous price but I like they way they drive. A certified preowned version would be much more reasonable around 16k.
The sticker price on jeeps means nothing because they are always offering incentives I wish they would put the actual price on the window so that you don’t have to play the game
That looks like a High Altitude Edition trim to me not a Limited. It’s actually a step up from the Limited and is also why everything is black inside, that’s part of the trim package.
It is the Limited. It’s a press car. It came with the factory sticker with all the options listed.
Definitely has some unique styling in the segment, but if it's going to struggle to accelerate, it's pretty much a Crosstrek, and I'd rather have the Crosstrek.

Hi I have a 2.0D Limited 17 plate. I love my jeep & have only used 4wd once during heavy snow, which worked perfectly. My question for 4wd owners is what is the top speed you can safely drive in 4wd mode? Thank you.
You can drive at highway speeds no problem.
just fyi.. its a jeep.. so there are lots of customs you can pick up on accent colors. interior and exterior

@@georgioskaraiskos8216 In US , there is more than enough space compared to Europe. As a consequence drivers there, are used to it.For them that was quite a tight spot. Nevertheless I recently got the 4xe counterpart and it actually has no problem parking in a quite tight European spot. Overall this car is ideal for our roads , performing excellent on both highways and "countryside" roads, you know what I mean , althought I suspect that the 4xe is more offroad capable than the one reviewed. @RevMatchTV , excellent review , keep up the good work.
pretty negative review. You are hard on this jeep. I have a Renegade Latitude Altitude and I love it and it works just fine on a normal trail. I use it for hunting. I have had other 4x4 in the past and never found the need for 4 low other than to tow or pull out somebody stuck. Some of the extream off roading isn't for the common person and this Jeep is just fine for the common person
Does your Latitude have the Latitude badge on the back? We got the same (2020) and it only has a 4x4 badge, no Latitude.???

@@Minahme-ob4kj yea look for a used car , all I buy is used cars with 20k miles and I save about 10k , I bought a 2014 dodge dart with 29k miles for 14k, currently has 117k miles still running strong 👍

Chrysler got bought out by FCA with completely new engineers from Maserati and alpha Romeo now designing jeeps entire lineup. That’s why they drive nicer than a Honda or Toyota because they sell over 2.2 million of these jeep and dodge vehicles every year they can put quality materials in them on my condo selling a fourth of that and can’t afford as nice and materials
I do think it’s unfair to compare people who take jeeps off-road to someone who drives a Honda on pavement and say the Honda last longer because if Honda was an off-road brand they would have a bad reputation because rock tears up metal

$200 a year is worth a smile on my face every day and my wrangler has 160,000 miles with three minor issues in its life
I have an 18 Upland Edition with 75,000 miles. So far, no issues

Conventional American thinking is bigger is better? No. I always looked at it as a ratio of size to capability. My Renegade TrailHawk is both shorter length than the Renegade you made the video on AND more capable. I was appalled to hear they only make the TrailHawk in a 1.4 Liter now... because you know what people were REALLY complaining about was it having TOO much power. Put a damned turbo on the 2.4 liter TrailHawk, offer it with a manual transmission, and that thing would sell like hotcakes...
But, instead we have the crap FCA is trying to foist on us...
@@3vo408 I’ve been to Moab with my TrailHawk. What I wished I had was turbo and manual transmission.
That was NOT a tight parking spot for a vehicle of that length; and it took at least three times longer than it should have to park it. I could park my Grand Cherokee L in that spot, no problem. If I were waiting behind you in traffic, I would be pretty annoyed.

So why does jeep have so many 4 wheel drive system's . Jeep likes to cheapen the 4 wheel drive if you buy a less expensive car. Not the case with Subaru or Mercedes or BMW
Jeep has many, many iterations of their 4 wheel drive systems it's true. Mercedes and BMW are 50-100% more expensive. Subaru is heading more up market as well.

Jeep has a pretty wide range of vehicles for different buyers. If you want to do more serious off roading obviously a Wrangler is going to be a better choice.

I am 50 years old and Grew Up with Jeeps in my family and the name Renegade holds a Special Place in my Heart and the Abomination that Currently is carrying the name just does not CUT IT! My wife's car is a Jeep Liberty Limited that we are giving to my niece as SOON as Jeep Plant that makes the Gladiators Opens UP and my Dealership get the Gladiator Mojave that I have on Order come in which I hope will be by the end of June! The cars that Designed and Made by FIAT for European Markets and then get the Jeep Badge Slapped on them are NOT True Jeeps!

I went to an Off Roading Event back in February about week after I took delivery of my Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4x4 Hemi V8 Fully Loaded Still had the Temp Tag on it and I kept getting Asked by a few Young People that Had NEVER been to a Jeep Event WHAT the HELL what I doing there with a Grand Cherokee that it was not capable to go on the Same trails the Wranglers were going!!! I told them all the SAME Thing that the Grand Cherokee is as Capable as ANY Wrangler is and with the Hemi V8 it can be even more Capable but since I was running the Factory Goodyear Wrangler tires I stayed at Level 3 and below I did not want to damage my New Jeep when this set of tires are done I am putting Falken Wildpeak AT3 Tires they are more capable and will give me an instant 1 inch of Extra Lift when I go to 265/65R18 since the Goodyears are 265/60R18. I cannot wait for the Mojave to come out so I bring one HOME that is a VERY COOL TRUCK with LOTS of Capability! That was the Jeep that was put into the US Military Trials for a Light Transport Attack Vehicle!
I found the Renegade to be the better " Jeep" compared to my Wrangler and 2019 GC . It is built better, it has zero rattles, the paint and finish is better, it is more nimble and more economical. Look closer at the build quality of a 2020 GC or a Wrangler ( paint, panel alignment, exterior trim fitment) and tell me then wich is the better product. I had a couple of 2000 and 2004 GC 4.7 many years ago but in terms of build quality the actual GC and Wrangler are a complete joke. The 2019 Wrangler has already begun to show rust on the weld points of the frame.
