Great video, I hope I can disassemble and reassemble mine as easily as you did!

Thanks for this excellent video of maintenance and cleaning of a Ambassador 5000 reel. I want to mention something that was not shown in the video. The brass bushing that is on the right side beneath the handle and star drag has a small ball bearing looking centering device on its side. This little bearing or bulge is what correctly located the bushing. I didn’t know the centering device was there, and it was frustrating to finally figure how to reinsert the bushing back into the reel. If you look closely around 6:00 forward maybe a minute, you will see what I am speaking of. Thanks😢

Yep. There were 2 designs of the 5143 bushing. One was self centering and the other was not. Either will work and you’ll find mint reels with the groove for the self cent design but they came with the non centering bushing from ABU.

This video saved me, I couldn't figure out why it felt wrong after I reassembled it. Your video informed me that the dog ears need to go on either side! I can't express how grateful I am. Mine looks just like this one, 4 screws. It has a serial number, but I can't track down the year of manufacture, would love to though.

@@Alexander_Evans your reel is a 4 screw so we know it was made before Jan of ‘68 as that’s when all 5000’s were switched to 3 screw models. Unfortunately, your reel foot number is indeed a serial number which can not be used in and of itself to date the reel. It can however be a clue if you have access to comparison reels with known dates of manufacture. My collection consists of 270 vintage 5000 and 6000 models. Several are completely pristine and complete including the original sales receipt. One of those has a serial number of 466991. It was bought in June of ‘64. The numbers were sequential so a rough estimate would put your reel as being built mid to late ‘63 to very early ‘64.

@@vintagerecordambassadeur4098 That is amazing! I've been searching all week for an answer! Thank you so much! I picked this reel up from my childhood neighbors estate auction. My father has a few old Ambassadeurs that he inherited from my grandpa and still uses as his main gear, so I've always had these in my mind as THE reel. I look forward to seeing more of your videos and collection!

Hey Pal, I appreciate you doing this video. I just inherited an Ambassadeur 5000 4 pin from my oldest brother that passed away last year. I can’t find any serial numbers on it anywhere. Any thoughts on its age?

First of all, sorry to hear about your brother. Serial numbers began being used in late ‘55 to early ‘56 on the 5000’s. This fact only dates your reel to sometime from ‘52 - early ‘I 56. Other clues are present but I would need to see pics of the reel including the spool, star drag, left and right end plates, line guide and the bottom of the reel foot. Basically some detailed pics from a bunch of angles. There are some internal clues as well but usually aren’t needed. If you would like to send some pics I’d be more than happy to assist. Let me know and I’ll give yo my email

LIKE TO ASK A QUESTION. ARE YOU STILL CLEANING REELS. I HAVE WHAT APPEARS TO BE A VERY OLD ONE ,IT STILL WORS VERY WELL. IT HA THE ORIGINAL PRICE STICKER ,SUGGESTED MFG. LIST PRICE OF 14.95 IT HAS NO MARKINGS INDICATING WHAT SERIES , SIZE OR LINE WEIGHT, APPEARS TO HAV FLOROCARBON LINE. . ALSO HAVE THE 7' AMBASSADOR CAST ROD WITH IT. THE ROD IS IN GREAT SHAPE BUT THE MODEL NUMBER IS GONE, THE ROD IS 7' LONG ,VERY STIFF AND IN VERY GOOD SHAPE, I WOULD USE IT ALSO BUT IT APPEARS THAT THERE WAS NEVER MARKINGS FOR LINE WEIGHT OR LURE WEIGHT. ANY INFO IS APPRECIATED. THANKS BOB
