Never be ashamed of 70s Styx. The Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight are really good records. Ten Years After is really underrated these days. I love Cricklewood Green.
It's a crime that Johnny Winters Albums are priced so low, the man is a blues guitar legend. And the same for Ten years after, as matter of fact Ten years after "A space in Time" is one of my all-time favorite albums ever!! good video, thanks for posting!!
I have need watching you for a while now and this was one of the most fun videos I have seen you do. The Styx bit was classic. I was rolling. Also I totally agree about J Winter and Ten Years. So good. Keep up the good work.
Can't believe the electric prunes is in there...that album, psychedelic sounds of the 13th floor elevators, incense and peppermints, and the doors debut are all albums that are excellent renditions of psychedelic rock.
Great post! Some of my favorite cheapie finds ($3.00 or under), include: Les Dudek - Say No More, Rare Earth - Ecology, Santana- Santana, The Kings - Are Here, Wes Montgomery - Road Song, The Babys - Anthology...and quite a few more! Thanks again!
Dylan,my man, when I was a pup I saw Styx in 1976 or 1977 they we're MASSIVE in the midwest(I'm a Michigander) they were warm up I believe for Ted Nugent, they lit it up like a Roman candle, I too fell into their grasp as a 17 yr old. I broke the spell, and I may have 1 of their albums, I got your back .Great call on the Frank Marino album, saw him in 1974 .Too much whiskey and a strobe light with him 5 feet away,it didn't end well.Cured me of whiskey, but not Frank. Nice Job "D".
One of the members of Spooky Tooth was Gary Wright who ended up having a successful solo career (Love Is Alive, Dream Weaver). Mick Jones from Foreigner was also a member
Finally, love from the VC for Alvin Lee, no one ever talks about him or TYA. I only own 1 Styx LP and that is Paradise Theater, I’m a sucker for a love song, so I’ll pick that one up next time I see it. Great thread.
"I Had to Much to Dream Last Night", turned me on to real weird songs. I heard it when I was about 11 years old. That electric Oboe, is so out there, I still love it! I could never afford to buy albums so I had the 45's. That is the only one that has survived.
I love the hammered dulcimer and am learning it now. In this world, there is space for every kind of genre and talent. I loved to learn about Folkways Records. Thank You.
Got an " audiophile " version of cornerstone. The sonics are incredible.... Also any TYA album is incredible, Alvin Lee is a master guitarist ... cool vid ...
Styx was my first concert at the age of 14. It was their Grand Illusion tour and I won the tickets on a local radio station! Styx music is very sentimental stuff for me.
No shame at all there, Terri! I loved the band, but I also like a lot of the stuff Dylan talks about on his channel - Hard Rock, Psych, Blues, Jazz, you name it!
So, I went to my local record shop and I picked up a mofi pressing of cargo by men at work for 25 bucks. It was sealed and I was so confused why they sold it so low. It's sold out on MoFi at 25 for the album and it sells on eBay for 80-90 and discogs says 60 something so why would they sell it so cheap?
Hi, Dylan. As for Styx, my favorite record of the band, is Paradise Theater. I have recently bought alot of import vinyl records. Germany, France, Japanese, UK, and the Netherlands. I also bought some imports, one from Bulgaria, one from Brazil and one from Italy. As for the one from Bulgaria, it's Genesis Abacab and get this-- it's out of print. As for the band Genesis, that band was famous for their stadium tours from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. Genesis, had their stadium tour, The Way We Walk 1992--1993. First off, I really like vinyl records much more so than CDs. Though, I do have a CD collection, due to the fact, that vinyl records disappeared from the store shelves in the 1990s, around 1995/1996. Bummer. Now, during Genesis's The Way We Walk tour, the band had 2 CDS, Vol. 1 the Shorts released in 1992 and Vol. 2 The Longs released in 1993. Now, at that time, vinyl records were still available in stores. I looked and looked for those 2 Genesis CDS on vinyl record and I couldn't find them anywhere, not anywhere. We didn't have Internet access yet, so we only had brick and mortar stores in which to shop from. I thought, to myself, that maybe those 2 Genesis live CDS were not available in the US. So, I thought well I at least have them on CD. Though, I really hoped that someday, I'd be able to get those on vinyl record. A little over a month ago, I lucked out bigtime. I shop on Ebay. So, I thought, I'll search for them on Ebay and see if those 2 are available on vinyl record. I found both Vol. 1 The Shorts and Vol. 2 The Longs on vinyl record. I bought both of them. Vol. 1 The Shorts is a Brazil import and Vol. 2 The Longs is an Italy import. Both of the vinyl records are in NM Mint condition and have excellent quality sound. Who knows, maybe these 2 Genesis recordings were only issued in other countries outside the United States? I never found them in stores when both Vols 1 and 2 were released back in 1992 and 1993. As for the France import, that I bought, it's The Beatles Sargent Pepper record. My UK imports, are AC/DC Black Ice, The Beatles Abbey Road, Genesis Seconds Out. My Japanese imports are 3 The Beatles records Second Album, Hard Days Night, and Yellow Submarine. I also have ZZ Top Afterburner, a Japanese import. I have other imports, but too many to mention for now. Keep spinning the vinyl!
I always enjoy your lists. Keep making them! Because of you I found Epitaph, J.K. & Co., Dream Syndicate, H. P. Lovecraft and more. Never would have heard of any of these otherwise. Thank you! (I'm almost glad you're not local; I'd have no money left!)
I was 13 in part of 1967 and spent my summer playing around with Stocks from a savings of $50 Bucks! I was so cute that the guys at the investment company helped me discover how to make good decisions which resulted in making $500 bucks over the summer. Suddenly music became everything to me; I bought a handsome stereo and over 30,000 albums over the course of about 15 years. When I moved to Oregon I had about 3,000 LPS left in Texas where I'm from and didn't have the pennies to carry them or store them once I'd moved. I GAVE THEM to a Well Known Hippie in the Austin area (Happy Jack,) who in turned gave them to the ROCK ROLL Museum in Austin and which helped them begin their collection. That was about when the Vinyl draught began that has lasted nearly 30 years. ....So I played stuff I could on my guitar, Worked 3 or 4,000 gigs mostly in Northern Oregon and Austin Tx, but...... I stopped a couple years ago. I decided to end the drought and build a Stereo like I use to own, but only difference is my home is about 50 sq ft. and it is JAM PACKED with stuff..... I can't keep it all. So I've been thinking when I have time (later like near to xmas) I'd bring down stuff and maybe if it's stuff you like I can get enough to buy stuff I don't have from you. I'm not looking for riches at all, I'm looking for Music I had 10 copies of once and with my gear make WAV files so I have the ENTIRE Album instead of a Greatest Hit Record. .... to me the meat of the album is the material that wasn't on the 45. anyway :)
Had to look it up in my Discogs collection as well. So here are my worthless 5 (all really good records actually): 5: Tom Robinson Band - Power In The Darkness (€5 Median) 4: Kate Bush - Lionheart (€5) 3: The Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Next (€4,22) 2: Achim Reichel - Regenballade (€4) 1: Fischer Z - Red Skies Over Paradise (€3,80)

Hi Dillon great video man Frank marino & Alvin Lee two great guitarist totally this made me think of Robin Trower I don't think I have ever heard you mention him ? ,do you own any of his Albums.
Can you do a video on how to use Discogs? I’ve started using it and it’s a little confusing. The different US plants, how the heck do you know what plant it was made in. Stuff like that
I bought the first Kursaal flyers album for ten bucks the other day,its great, country and rock n roll from the UK ,in 1975, they were part of that pub rock scene i guess, has a great version of mickey Jupps Cross country, is a good record.
I just bought a turntable for the first time in 25+ years..... and the Styx record is among the records that were in my wife's leftover collection of like 20 records. Finding the box with my wife's old records made me start to want vinyl again. I barely have 30 records in total, but that Styx record is one of them. And I LIKE IT and why would I need to be ashamed of it?
You've convinced me! I'm gonna go out and get that Styx record, which I have seen ever since it came out and passed over. As for Ten Years After, Cricklewood Green is in my all-time top ten records. I had that Crowbar on vinyl, now on a CD burn. It is very good. Nice video here!
Just bought the Frank Marino Live today. My boss at the record I worked at in the mid 80's turned me to that one (RIP Chris). Rattled the windows of the store many Friday Nights with it. Alvin Lee IS a monster as well. And I'm right there with you, I like Cornerstone too. Take me down to the Boat on The River...
Those two Electric Prunes tracks are amazing! I Had To Much To Dream and Get Me To The World On Time just don’t date, they sound as great now as they did in the mid-60’s!
Discogs is a great resource! Are you familiar with BestEverAlbums? It’s similar to RateYourMusic, but designed especially for rating and ranking albums, and chart making. I’d love to see your Top favorite Heavy Psych & Hard Rock charts!
I used to have that MAHOGANY RUSH lp back when it was current. I sold it a long, long time ago. Frank Marino is,like myself,a Canadian. I think he's from Toronto and the band had a decent following for a time here in Canada. Yes,he was doing the Hendrix impersonating way before VAUGHAN. That lp has him doing PURPLE HAZE as a finale. Naysayers used to get on him for doing Hendrix. That lp has a blurb on the back taking a swipe at the reviewers who never liked the band. He was still at it in the early 80s. Have no idea if he's still playing.
In an average sized record shop you can easily find 50 vinyls for a few dollars that are far superior to some they may be selling for a 1000$ or so. Which is handy if you are not someone given lots of dollars to spend on luxury items.
I’m surprised you don’t have a Ventures, Sandy Nelson or Duane Eddy record with a median in the 1-2 range, 3 of my instro faves that they seem to clean up too much when they make CD comps
Wow, never be emabarrased by Styx. That Cornerstne album is great and is really well produced. People always seem to rag on "Babe," but it was very sucessful of a single and made those boys very rich.
Hell. I got a copy of Ten Years After "Recorded Live" 2LP in NM media VG sleeve the other week, but not a purchase, it was used as stiffening in the packing of the record I bought. I asked the Discogs seller if he made a mistake, and no he really had put it as extra packaging! Never heard of Ten Years After but this record is so good, musically awesome, pressing silent and clean - and FREE. Now that was packaging 😂
Excellent video !! Love that Live Frank Marino Album. Funny , the least valuable albums are some of my favorites. lol Like watching your videos and everyones here in the vinyl community. Just did a Top ten Discogs video the other day, really overall I don't give these types of price list much merit. Something goes in and out of fashion, or an artist passes away, even a new batch of pressing can effect prices. Last two years seen prices rise and fall. But will say my top ten, the top five have been pretty stationary over time.
Another great label similar to Folkways is the June Appal label, which focuses on Appalachian Folk. Most of their records are dirt cheap and quite good. Look for albums by Malcolm Dalglish and John Mccutcheon for Appalachian style hammer dulcimer.
Your right Dylan Ten Years After smokes, the bluest blues by them is great Also Mahogany Rush “Strange Universe” great great album Saw them open for Aerosmith at Winterland in Sf back in the 70s and just blew Aerosmith off the stage Anyway I enjoy your stuff, thanks all buddy
A large percentage of my collection is bargain bin albums. Starting in the mid-'70s I bought every 3-5 dollar record I could afford. I'm so glad I did, now I have hundreds of records that would be hard to acquire today, and they wouldn't be $3.
My cheapest is 12" Promo for National Velvet's 68 Hours. That's a rare treasure that is. If you can get behind late 80's Goth Rock with a serious chops and a sense of humour. I can't believe that's the winner. Serious heat.
bro, i slept on this video for 3 months. it may your best one. you are actually quite charming here, and frequently hilarious. check out the folkways release of mary williams' self titled LP (alternatively known as 'black christ from the andes'). sick gospel-soul bop. also, yousounded like harry nilsson when singing that styx tune. happy weekend and RSD!
yes, Cornerstone IS a great record for it's time. I still have it and break it out and listen to it once in a while. Is it a favorite? Not so much anymore, but it was HUGE in it's day for a reason.
Loved Styx back in the day, still like them today but the music is dated for sure. Think I still have my 1st pressing of Hi Infidelity, too. I love it, still. All of my U2 are first pressing as well. Fun to listen to the older vinyl and new remastered LPs. How far technology has come. Love your channel. I share interest in some of your music favs but not all. It’s okay though, I just enjoy listening to your stories. Gave your channel a shoutout tonight on my Amazon review for the plastic sleeves. Based on your recommendation I bought some sleeves for all of my vinyl jackets, old and new.
Hey mate, wrap your ears around Wet Willie - keep on smilin, one of my all time favourites- not a bad song on either side, If I find another copy will send it, cheers Joel from New Zealand
There’s a lot of great records that sell so cheap . A few that come to mind are bands like Moody Blues Jethro Tull Gentle Giant Jefferson airplane It’s crazy when those albums sell for less than a Michael Bolton or Amy Grant album
Fun video. I had a look at my least valuable vinyl albums... 10 Greenslade - Time And Tide - Warner Bros, UK 1975 - £7.90 09 Dave Brubeck - Anything Goes! - Columbia, USA 1965 - £7.89 08 Carol Grimes - Warm Blood - Caroline, UK 1974 - £7.86 07 Philip Johnson - Youth In Mourning - Superior Viaduct, USA 2014 - £7.46 06 Grame Grace - Hail Me - RCA, UK 1975 - £6.73 05 Klaus Schulze - Blackdance - Virgin, France 1975 - £5.88 04 David Bedford - Star's End - Virgin, UK 1974 - £5.53 03 Nelson Slater - Wild Angel - RCA, USA 1976 - £5.40 02 The Shirts - The Shirts - Harvest, UK 1978 - £5.30 01 Mike Oldfield - Hergest Ridge - Virgin, UK 1974 - £5.00 All worth that much money at least!
There's some real gems in that list. I own many of them. The Ten Years After is a great LP. Crowbar is another. They were from Canada. Mahogany Rush, another Canadian band. I don't quite get your SRV comparison though, other than SRV covered a few Jimi songs. That Frank Marino album is more like Johnny Winter during his "Captured Live" era and he'd be the first to say that. The first 6 albums by MR are much more psych and my favorites.
I'm not surprised by the Larry Coryell. I bought that album new for $3.99. The problem is the Jazz Fusion catagory get's no respect. I have sealed copies of the Mahavishnu Orchestra Inner Mounting Flames and Birds Of Fire and I guarantee they aren't even worth the $3.99 I paid for them new. I realized back in 80's that people and critics alike hate this catagory but that's why I love.
I have you beat a few Years in age I'm pretty sure but I'm a Styx fan & Corner Stone is one of my fav's. I never had the album but I do have it on cassette.
Where do you buy your good stuff cuz all the records I find in thrift stores look like junk.. and any records I like are in banged up condition. Are if their look OK they only have low value about 3 - 7$
How do you find this information? I see Discogs has the median worth of my collection, but how do you find the price for each individual record? I hope you don't have to look it up one record at a time.
Never be ashamed of 70s Styx. The Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight are really good records. Ten Years After is really underrated these days. I love Cricklewood Green.

Naysayers used to get on him for doing Hendrix. That lp has a blurb on the back taking a swipe at the reviewers who never liked the band. He was still at it in the early 80s. Have no idea if he's still playing.
I literally just picked up that Styx record the other day and had the same experience you did when you were a kid lol. No wonder it was $1
In an average sized record shop you can easily find 50 vinyls for a few dollars that are far superior to some they may be selling for a 1000$ or so. Which is handy if you are not someone given lots of dollars to spend on luxury items.
Just found this channel. It's really fun and interesting.
"I have $2.50." Great reason not to sell a record!! Love it.
Too cool, dude! I have several of those! Ten Years After was an amazing band. I have all their stuff! Keep it up, buddy!!!
I’m surprised you don’t have a Ventures, Sandy Nelson or Duane Eddy record with a median in the 1-2 range, 3 of my instro faves that they seem to clean up too much when they make CD comps
You're right about Johnny Winter and 10 Years Later! Should be worth more.
👏👏👏👏👏 WOW Dill... got some good pipes. Really enjoying your channel. 😀
Hi, I’m starting to like classic country now. Any chance you could do a review of 50,60 and 70s . Your top 10 or 20?
Spooky Tooth really is an amazing band. Very underrated!! Great idea for a vid!
Spooky 2 and The Mirror are great !
Always cool and thanks!
Another great label similar to Folkways is the June Appal label, which focuses on Appalachian Folk. Most of their records are dirt cheap and quite good. Look for albums by Malcolm Dalglish and John Mccutcheon for Appalachian style hammer dulcimer.
Your right Dylan Ten Years After smokes, the bluest blues by them is great
Also Mahogany Rush “Strange Universe” great great album
Saw them open for Aerosmith at Winterland in Sf back in the 70s and just blew Aerosmith off the stage
Anyway I enjoy your stuff, thanks all buddy
Thank you for spooky tooth. Im streaming and enjoying. 🙏
Procol Harum's 'A Salty Dog' can currently be had for $7 on Discogs, if you don't have it. It's a damn good art rock album, IMHO!
love the electric prunes, have a repress of it on purple vinyl. Do not see it for under $30-50 in my area, and even those are VG at the best.
A large percentage of my collection is bargain bin albums. Starting in the mid-'70s I bought every 3-5 dollar record I could afford. I'm so glad I did, now I have hundreds of records that would be hard to acquire today, and they wouldn't be $3.
Never be ashamed of Styx - they're awesome!!!
Wow you can SING. Drop the EP man we're waiting
Styx cover tunes! Comin atcha
My cheapest is 12" Promo for National Velvet's 68 Hours. That's a rare treasure that is. If you can get behind late 80's Goth Rock with a serious chops and a sense of humour. I can't believe that's the winner. Serious heat.
HAH! Also a Mahogany Rush fan as well!!! That Live LP is one of my favs.
I loved the singing part. 👍
bro, i slept on this video for 3 months. it may your best one. you are actually quite charming here, and frequently hilarious. check out the folkways release of mary williams' self titled LP (alternatively known as 'black christ from the andes'). sick gospel-soul bop. also, yousounded like harry nilsson when singing that styx tune. happy weekend and RSD!
The voice of an angel 😬😬. I got sent 4 free Styx vinyl box sets a while ago by mistake and sold them all, wish I’d kept one now! 👍
yes, Cornerstone IS a great record for it's time.
I also recommend Crowbar's "Heavy Duty" LP. Great Canadian blues rock, "Heavy Duty' has a touch of psych.
Hey mate, wrap your ears around Wet Willie - keep on smilin, one of my all time favourites- not a bad song on either side, If I find another copy will send it, cheers Joel from New Zealand
Good stuff man! Thanks!!!
There’s a lot of great records that sell so cheap . A few that come to mind are bands like
Moody Blues
Jethro Tull
Gentle Giant
Jefferson airplane
It’s crazy when those albums sell for less than a Michael Bolton or Amy Grant album
Fun video. I had a look at my least valuable vinyl albums...
10 Greenslade - Time And Tide - Warner Bros, UK 1975 - £7.90
09 Dave Brubeck - Anything Goes! - Columbia, USA 1965 - £7.89
08 Carol Grimes - Warm Blood - Caroline, UK 1974 - £7.86
07 Philip Johnson - Youth In Mourning - Superior Viaduct, USA 2014 - £7.46
06 Grame Grace - Hail Me - RCA, UK 1975 - £6.73
05 Klaus Schulze - Blackdance - Virgin, France 1975 - £5.88
04 David Bedford - Star's End - Virgin, UK 1974 - £5.53
03 Nelson Slater - Wild Angel - RCA, USA 1976 - £5.40
02 The Shirts - The Shirts - Harvest, UK 1978 - £5.30
01 Mike Oldfield - Hergest Ridge - Virgin, UK 1974 - £5.00
All worth that much money at least!
Thanks man!
Would like to watch a video of how you price your records, it would be interesting and it would help me to price mine hahaha, Love this channel! :)
Aww man but I love Ten Years After! Who cares about “value” those dudes rock!
Dylan singing like an angel!
I just found your channel, it's awesome! Your videos are informative and funny, keep up the great work. I'm a complete "vinyl junkie", too!
🎵🎶🎵🎶
Thanks so much! 🙏🤘
Some of my favorites: Styx, Johnny Winter
Where do you buy your good stuff cuz all the records I find in thrift stores look like junk.. and any records I like are in banged up condition. Are if their look OK they only have low value about 3 - 7$
It’s not cheap, but I recently got flower travelin band’s first album Anywhere, 2nd press and it’s amazing.
Amazing!
Great video! Giving me some ideas for budget shopping. 🎸🤘🤘🎸
STYX!!! Cornerstone is awesome, never be ashamed of STYX
How do you find this information? I see Discogs has the median worth of my collection, but how do you find the price for each individual record? I hope you don't have to look it up one record at a time.
I had to look up hammer dulcimer and man, that is one sweet instrument!! First thing it pulled up was a guy playing Sweet Child of Mine. Amazing!
Hahah
