In this quick video I demonstrate how to unlock or release a constant tension hose clamp used typically on coolant or heater hoses. It will be in the locked position either from the factory on a new hose, newly bought clamps, or if you used a tool to compress and lock it.
Hose clamp pliers set I used (or similar):

Thanks for puttin' this out. Very helpful information. Also, trying to adjust - loosen or clamp - these things is a royal pain in the ass with just pliers or vice grips. Gotta have the tool. In fact, I just snapped the main tab when trying to loosen the clamp in order to put it back on after replacing the thermostat. All the auto parts stores in my area don't even carry the spring clamp. Had to go to the dealership to pay 12 X the price for a new spring clamp. Why don't auto parts stores, chains like Napa, O'Reilly, and Autozone don't carry them anymore? Only one was willing to "special order" it. What's the problem with these clamps? They're far and away better than the worm-drive clamp, which loosens up when the coolant temp gets hot (like 200 degrees), then it leaks.
What is a good source for spring clamps? I know Amazon carries them, but I don't want to wait 3 days for the part to arrive.

These are all great questions and I went round and round with the other hoses in this engine on worm drive vs spring clamp and watched and read all the research. I've seen like you tons of info on worm drive clamps loosening over time and the suggestion not to use them, but honestly I've used them for years under heat with no issues and like them 10x better than spring clamp as worm drive are easier to use than clamps. Regardless, if wanting to stick with spring/constant-tension clamps (which this hose had as it was a Ford replacement), it's probably best to buy an assortment kit and keep in the garage as you said they are not readily available. Here is one site that carries a variety: www.mcmaster.com/clamps/pipe-tubing-hose-and-fittings/constant-tension-spring-band-clamps-for-firm-hose-and-tube/ Thanks for watching!

Well this is good to know in case you have an automobile that has this type instead of the medal one with the screw on the side.

Yeah the one with the screw is called a 'worm gear' style clamp and I like them 10x better. The problem is a lot of mechanics say the worm gear don't create constant tension like these clamps, so over time as the hose expands and contracts the spring clamps can adjust vs the worm gear that are statically set. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for showing how to release the tab to have the clamp hold the hose. I removed the clamp, and now would like to have the tap back in the hole so that I can reuse the clamp. I tried to do this with pliers similar to yours but could not do it. Can you please advise how to do it?

Truthfully I'm not that good in what you are asking which is re-locking the clamp so it stays open. Per the videos I watch the clamping tool is supposed to make this super easy. The idea is you compress them passed each other and the tabs will lock. Unfortunately I'm like 1 for 4 getting it to work. Right now I'm not working on the car to try again but if I have one laying around I'll see if I can get it working and make another video on how to do it someday if I figure it out. Thanks for watching!

Some of the tools I had in my clamp removal set were at the end of a flexible cable to get into tough spots. Would something like that work?
