    My party came across one of these guys during Mad Mage. Our DM let us “tame” it by feeding it gems we had found across the dungeon like a trail of candy. He was our buddy until we ran out of gems and then he wandered off, we were pretty upset to lose him but we’ll never forget having him around.

      +World of MONSTERS It is true, a Xorn is probably more scared of you, than you are of it. Strangers in a strange land, the Xorn can't understand us, and we must seem quite monstrous to them (and very, very violent)

    This And the Flumph gives me an idea for a dwarven village/fort. Basically the fantasy version of District 9 where underdark outsiders live, because it's safer than settlements made by mind flayers, derro/dreugar, or drow. The dwarves, due to their insular nature, aren't thrilled, but let them stay due to the unorthodox combination of their mainly good alignment and their greed/love for money. Thus the outsiders become second class citizens and cheap labour. Hilarity ensues.

    this is one of those creatures that i just never thought i'd bring into one of my games .... UNTIL NOW. so many of my games have been low-level and this guy always seemed way out-of-reach. even though he's classic. honestly, the majority of classic monsters have never made it into my games. when i was very young, maybe 16, i DM'd a game with just my younger brother where he met up with a black dragon. this would have been 1986, i think. we'd been playing maybe a year and had graduated from the basic box set to the 1st edition hardback books. didn't really have any other players at the time, though i'd soon have a decent table full of nerds. and even though i had no real idea what i was doing with the dragon, i basically destroyed my brother in a couple rounds. so it was one of those newbie learning experiences -- "never do THAT again!" and it probably deeply colored how i played for years afterward.
    first -- love, love, love that you took it to the Elemental Plane of Earth to start off. that's so helpful for me in my current homebrew planescape campaign which is finally looking like it'll get off the ground in the next month.
    the whole idea that these guys get trapped on the Prime and just want to get home make them such brilliantly tragic characters. a person could weave a whole "Castaway" motif around them. the idea that they see the potential in a band of adventurers to get them home just fills me up with role-playing opportunities and ideas.

      +Rp Sketchbooks WOW!! that miniature at 4:50 is one of the most creative renderings of the Xorn i've ever seen ... very nearly elephantine, and the trilateral symmetry makes more sense there than in most other artistic impressions i've seen before. brilliant find.

    • @rpsketchbooks3931
      @rpsketchbooks3931 9 років тому

      +Rp Sketchbooks ... at 5:10 where you point out there are "powerhouses, engines of destruction" i'd add they are likely also engines of creation. if i were a fantasy billionaire building a stronghold, if dwarves were designing the details i'd still want to have xorn doing the foundation and basic walls. who would be better, really? they might be expensive, but they'd probably also be fast and thorough.

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  9 років тому +2

      you search the corpse for loot, there is a small locket, inside is a picture of the Xorn's wife and children.... A glossy brochure from a magical theme park called "mystery tunnels", several small, hand made toys in a bag, along with some wet wipes and a bag of assorted small gems, and a diaper. *wipe tears from eyes*

    • @rpsketchbooks3931
      @rpsketchbooks3931 9 років тому +1

      +Rp Sketchbooks the 2nd-half of the video where you get into their environment -- ah, man. so cool. really exciting descriptions and ideas. fabulous.
      and it begs the question -- why visit the Prime? or, how can one hire and work with a Xorn? and actually, offering it precious Prime Material metals and gems is probably offering it rubbish, except in rare extreme cases. its best natural resources are where it already lives. so to be tempted to venture away from their home plane it seems to me you'd have to offer them something "extra", something they can't get on their own world. so, perhaps metal items infused with Dwarven or Elven magic are the thing that makes it worth considering for a Xorn to leave his ordinary elemental-plane-burgers for a bit of that exotic taste. IF ... if resources are the key to drawing them out or striking bargains with them in the first place. do most Prime adventurers work for food, after all? of course being able to help the Xorn further their own goals would also be enticing to them -- Xorn might need a canny basher to raid the elemental plane of air and bring back artifacts that were stolen, or something of that nature, and in return for that help from a Prime Worlder they might be willing to enter the comparative "wasteland" of the Prime to build a tunnel network for a King who needs a labyrinth or whatever.
      love what you're doing here, AJ. its always a treat. this bad boy is definitely making it into my new campaign. many thanks to you, bro.

    Given their proclivity towards breaking stone architecture, can these be counted as a siege beast even though it of a smaller size than most in this category?
    Because I can see som king or warlord offering a a couple bags of gems to a few Xorn in exchange for them being used as projectiles for catapults, smashing through a wall or being launched over it, and then beginning to destroy any stone(or weaker material) fortifications around their landing site.

    Oh, Sir Mister Pickett!
    I have a request based on a campaign I've got in mind. (a sort of "whole new world, go map the wilderness" type thingy)
    Would you mind doing a bundle of Cryptid based monsters? (when you have the time, of course) In particular, I'm looking for things like the Sasquatch, Yeti (there's a big difference), Lake monsters of all types, Chupacabras, Mothmen, and how you can apply them to an adventure, and maybe a video on how to make any such monster in a similar vein of unusual nature.
    No pressure, just asking!
    Love your vids!
    ~Bori

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  9 років тому +5

      +XxSoraMifunexX If you want stats for those, I can certainly help there. A Sasquatch (Samsquanch) is a Bugbear, with more hit points and a slam attack. A lake monster is a Plesiosaurus or a Giant Snake (no poison, but an upgraded bite), Giant Shark is also possible, even a fresh water shark. Chupacabra is a Panther, with a Stirge blood draining attack. Mothmen, Thinman, essentially just humanoids with some special trait (a mind blast would be suitable) and a lot of stealth. I might put together a Monsterology video on how to handle creatures that are widely rumoured and mysterious.

      @@donniesnyman2517 The Xorn mating process begins by the seeking out and consumption of mainly diamonds, the eggs of the xorn have an outer diamond layer followed by thin films of exotic metals mostly, some of which are not found in environments where free oxygen is present (so, in space or most likely, in the Elemental plane of Earth or of Fire). Xorn mate in a cluster of three individuals, they exchange their eggs, appearing to swallow them whole, and it is some aspect of their digestive process which makes the egg viable, incubated and during this long interval, the egg takes on characteristics of it's mother/host as well as it's original mother. The eggs are regurgitated when conditions are good and they hatch into infant xorn in a matter of hours, but, only in the presence of free oxygen in the environment, though why this is, must be a matter for alchemists rather than sages. Infant xorn grow slowly, but are capable of feeding themselves almost immediately, for the first few months the infant will simply stay close to an adult Xorn (doesn't have to be ita parent) and begs for regurgitated stomach contents, thus taking in vital internal elemental energy that allows them to digest almost any mineral deposit.

    Energy isn't a *thing* though. Energy is a property of matter. Given that souls exist in The Forgotten Realms it'd be more accurate to say that elementals are souls that can create and power mobile bodies from minerals, liquids and gasses.

    • @deadmeme8973
      @deadmeme8973 7 років тому +1

      And that's not just semantics, DnD always tried to stay semi-realistic aside from all the magic and reality-defying creatures.

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  7 років тому +1

      I would say that, but then this is blown apart when we consider that a genie is a soul that has combined with Elemental matter.. if Elementals had souls, they would all be genies, and, they would also be subject to the predations of fiendish powers, seeking to capture their souls for their own purposes... so, Elementals have a different kind of existence, and describing it as energy is just the easiest means to convey their actions.. you could say they are made from concordential etheream in a flogistonic matrix, and it would just be words.. I would prefer to keep it as clear as I can, for the purpose of game narrative.

    • @deadmeme8973
      @deadmeme8973 7 років тому +2

      If energy means something else in the context of DnD it works perfectly. If it's the same stuff as energy in real life, it's anti-science. Then again, fiction is fiction.
