This channel is such a bad influence on me, keeps inspiring me to refinish my guitars. Now half of them are bare wood and I've run out of free time and money to complete them, lol!
Someday when my free time finally lines up with the proper paint spraying weather/humidity level, I'll get them done. Funny part is that clear coating/painting/powder coating is what I do at my job and we have spray booths/guns and everything, but we're so busy with our own products that there's no spare time for using the equipment for personal projects.
I looked for product at home depot. In 2023, the HD in my area doesnt carry it anymore but Michaels craft strore had it in gold and silver. Thx for video. I was a lil nervous to put it on my table but after watching your video...im ready to tackle the project 😊
I actually tried this product on a guitar neck ,I let it dry 30 min.rubbed in with a soft cloth ,then buffed it with a Dremel polishing wheel and it came out great
This is perfect! I bought this antique gold mirror, I found a stand at the recycle bin that was quite nifty I sanded it down and was wondering what to use this would be great it'll match my mirror! Thanks Brad
I've done grain fills with "gilder's paste" and it's been very challenging because the product is based in mineral spirits and the "flash off" is pretty quick. I will have to look for this stuff at the local HD. I love the idea of burnishing with a plastic bag - going to have to try that if I ever decide to do this again. If you happen to have a scrap of ash or mahogany maybe you could stain it black then do a little grain fill with this and post up a pic.
LOL - I follow you on Insta - I guess I should log in every now and then :) I see the pic (instagram.com/p/BnxJfnVlPq0/ ) and yes, that's a really nice aesthetic!
Hahaha with the number of times I’ve done that I’m just glad it doesn’t actually come back thicker and darker in shaved areas. That would look ridiculous.
That looks like great stuff Brad, be interesting like you say to see what its like on open grain wood, but that Easel looks great, thank you for sharing with us, Cheers
I saw this vid yesterday and thought it read Metallica finishing wax and thought to myself, why would Metallica have there own wax product, that's weird! NOW I get it!Metallic!DUH!
Great video Brad. Quick question - any tips for sealing / clear coating metallic paint? Stuff like 2x out of a can seems to dull the metallic look a lot. Any help appreciated, thanks!
@@BradAngove I'm gonna try topping it with tru oil. I have a Cabronita that's black right now. Gonna get some white wax and do a faux binding. Then I'm gonna mix some Highland die (cordovan and red mahogany) and die the back and top the whole thing with tru oil. It's probably gonna take all summer.
Great video. Would adding water dull or lift any wax since wood is porous or did you seal the wood with anything before applying the wax...maybe I missed where you mentioned this? I recently bought some wood stain for an easel and it stained my hands when I picked it up. The company tolde I should of sealed the wood first before applying. Also can you varnish over this this to seal the wax in... I also want a wax suitable for a plaster sculpture but it needs a final. Varnish coat. If so how long would you leave it before applying varnish?
Water doesn’t react well with wax. They repel eachother. If you fully seal before stain it won’t stain. I stain then seal. Once sealed it won’t come off on your hands anymore. Some varnishes with work over the wax, but largely wax is not intended to have things stick to it.
The Rub n Buff silver wax + True Black stain that Dan Thompson of Guns n Guitars used on his Tele project turned out pretty awesome I thought. Have you tried anything like that Brad with a metallic wax? Any plans to?
I thought the same thing and tried topping it with tru oil but the oil lifts it. Next thing you inow I had a bunch of gold wax on my rag and none on the sample piece of wood.
I’ve got an old video on getting started with your airbrush. I’m also planning a new series on airbrush basics if I ever get the time to get it going haha.
AWESOME man Thanks, and Ill be watching..... for that new series. By the way , I just about got that SG done, ill have about $750 in it, planning on giving it to me son. I so appreciate all the help you gave me with the nitroscellose lacquer paint man...definitely would never got that done without your help... and it looks amazing...thanks again... he will be one happy boy...even though he is 22 and 6 foot 3.....lol
I seen this great deal on eBay, for a Epiphone SG 400, so I bought it for my son. When it arrived the only thing SG 400 on it was the truss rod cover. The body had a huge dent about 1 inch wide and about a quarter inch deep in it. The tuners were shot, and the pickups and pots were out of a SG special... real junk, and someone had wired them up all, wrong. I was so mad I could have rung the sellers neck. But, instead I thought.... "project guitar" I am a electrical engineer , I love wood working and thought painting this thing should be easy enough....lol. I have replaced the tuners with Grover's, replaced the pick ups with some classic faded 490's Gibson's, and all new Gibson pots , and jack, and a switchcraft toggle. releveled and polished the frets, used some of that KEDRA red dye to kind of freshen up the rosewood and add just a hint of red to the fingerboard to kind of compliment the red neck, new strings, a Wilkinson roller bridge, and tail stop, and graphite nut. I ordered some cheap pick guard material off eBay and made pickup covers under the chrome rings and a new matching white pearl pick guard. A new metal toggle switch plate. and nut plate from Hell guitars to finish it off, oh and I made a chrome plate to go around the jack. So that was all the EASY stuff, the nitro lacquer paint job turned out to be by far ...for me, the hardest part of the whole job. Painting, and clear coating this thing 3 times before I finally got it right...lol, what a learning experience the nitrocellulose lacquer turned out to be.I just painted the body , because I did not want to try and deal with painting and matching around the band on the edge of the fretboard, and the red clear wood grain on the neck just needed sanded and polished to get it back to new looking. I thank you for ALL your help with the painting process I never would have been successful with it without your help. Now just waiting the 4-5 weeks to sand out the orange peel and polish the clear coat. I hope this son of mine likes the guitar LOL. He will never know how much work I really put into it...thanks again man.
Wow, that sounds like an awesome project. Lots of cool stuff added in there. I don’t know what kind of asshole sells something like that under those pretenses, but I’m glad you got it all sorted out and glad I could help with the finishing part.
Hey Brad. I tryed the wax, it great but I tryed topping it with Tru Oil and it lifts it. I left the wax on a sample piece of wood about a day and then trued the Tru Oil and no dice; it lifts it.
@@BradAngove I saw some of these guitars where people painted them with copper paint and then applied some kind of acid to it. Turned our to look really cool with discolorations and "rusty" patina. But of course I am also interested in the methods you mentioned. Thanks for your videos!
I want to do some interior wooden doors in a metallic finish, but this looks like a specialty product not meant for opaque coverage. Am I right? Is it just like a kind of stain/accent colour? I want to create a rustic kind of finish, with a glazed tint of sorts to create texture. Could this be mixed with a stain or glaze (or both) to add depth and be used as a finishing touch over a solid metallic gold?
You can’t mix this one with stain, but you can stain first and then add some of this overtop. It’s not really for opaque coverage. We would generally use gold paint for that.
Haha I try to stick with guitar based music on guitar related videos. It’s oddly difficult to find good rock-style background music though for some reason.
Hi Brad, I was wondering about staining a guitar and then grain filling with wax, wiping it back to the stain to just show the grain. Would a tru oil finish work or is this a disaster waiting to happen? Would hate to wreck a guitar body!
Very cool to see another Angove out there! You have got to be on this side of the pond, because that does not sound like a Cornish accent. Dave Angove - Pennsylvania
You would do it the other way around. Dye first, then light coat of sealer, then wax in the grain. It would work with the wax, but not with the wood type used on the kit.
Hey Brad, love your videos but since you are a guitar oriented channel, perhaps some guitar based music would please your viewers better than EDM techno stuff.....
Perhaps. I do tend to look for more of that type of music for guitar based videos, but frankly it’s a bit difficult to find good “background music” in that vein.
We all should record him some custom guitar-oriented tracks for his videos. Probably has a thousand fans by now capable of it. Give us a place to send the files and I bet you'll get more than a few.

I’ve coated over it with a couple things including lacquer and water based poly. Both worked fine.

Just wondering, would this work on a car? I mean it’s wax, if you can get it in the color of your car you can apply it on a car 🤔
No. On cars you use carnauba wax to protect the finish. This is a finishing wax. It’s a different concept.

You shuold use that on the new buid your doing

Yes. I was thinking useing that as a grain filler and then use a transparent black dye over it. Would that work with that wax?

Heh heh heh.
I actually didn’t find heat to be helpful with this stuff oddly enough.
