SMT Nocturne - Kagutsuchi + Lucifer Fight (Hard, Magic Run, TDE)

Oh boy. This one took quite a bit. I'm using PCSX2 because 1) I finally have a computer for content, and 2) the footage is much easier to use and it looks better (obviously).
The rules of this challenge:
1) No physical skills are allowed. The only exception are counter skills (such as avenge) because they count as passive skills in this game.
2) I must complete the game with the True Demon Ending (TDE) on hard difficulty
Anyways, Kagutsuchi is a total joke. You can easily beat him by spamming buffs and debuffs, then going in with fire-boosted elemental attacks. Easy peasy.
The real challenge here is Lucifer, who has taken me over 6 months of on-and-off attempts. He's a real pain in the ass. For starters, as most of you already know, he boasts a 75% resistance to all attacks. This would be fine, because I have access to the pierce skill, but unfortunately, magic attacks aren't affected by this. This means I can only get an upwards of ≈1.1k damage on a lucky roll (this is with max buff + debuffs). Lucifer likes to spam Dekaja a LOT during this fight, so I'm almost never in peak conditions. Another thing: Rakukaja and War Cry are ABSOLUTELY MANDATORY for this fight, or else Lucifer will easily be able to kill you with High Kings. The main strategy is to use Demi fiend as a healer (Soma Drops, Bead Chains, etc...), have a demon with high HP, Debilitate, War Cry, and Makakaja (Daisoujou, in my case). You also want to have two demons with Rakukaja. This will ensure you'll be at least +3 def at the end of every turn. Lastly, you'll want to have the "Avenge Pierce" combo on as many demons as possible. While this is technically physical damage (triggering your normal "attack"), there's realistically no reasonable way to beat Lucifer without it (the damage is crucial for finishing him off before the fight drags on too long). The first phase is easy. Buff yourself, debuff him, and start chipping away at his health with fire-boosted Ragnaroks and Prominences. Once you chip away about 10-15k HP, he starts using Evil Gleam, but this is useless against all my demons due to their resistances. Once you take out about 20k HP, this is where things start to get a bit annoying. He will almost always open his turn with Dekaja if you have buffs, followed by High King. Realistically, you'll get about 300 to 600 damage per turn (given he doesn't use the combo), so this phase lasts forever. Once you knock him down by about 35-40k HP, this is where shit gets real (and your luck determines everything). Lucifer will start throwing out Root of Evil on most turns. My demons (minus Surt) are immune to all ailments, so they only have a 30% chance of being put in real danger (20% chance to reduce HP by 75%, 10% chance to reduce HP by *90%*). The 90% HP roll is extremely dangerous because 1) it's entirely up to luck, as stated earlier, and 2). If he lands this, a follow-up regular attack will almost always kill said demon due to his crit rate, and even then, his regular attack does close to 100 damage with max debuffs + buffs. On top of this, he will still use the High King combo, sometimes in tandem with RoE. Endure will save your ass in this part of the fight. Fortunately, I got super lucky. He never went for the follow-up combo and didn't even use RoE much. Take advantage of every turn he wastes by buffing your magic (once you're at +4 def) and going in with Ragnarok and Prominence. Eventually, with enough luck, you will take him out.
7/6/23 Update:
After watching Deus's solo no demon single press turn run, I realized that you could drain Lucifer's MP to prevent him from using Dekaja/Dekunda, albeit at an extremely slow pace, taking 6-8 hours depending on the conditions. With this in mind, it MAY be possible to beat Lucifer without using the Avenge Pierce combo, but I haven't tested it. You also still have to worry about the risk of the RoE combo, and the lack of physical makes it much more likely to appear.

If you're interested in more MegaTen challenge runs, I recently started up my Solo Orpheus Only No Fusion run in P3 FES, which hopefully won't take me nearly as long as it did on original hardware (thank god for savestates).
“The game doesn’t have a strength meta! Magic is just as viable!” people when lucifer walks in:
Don’t worry guys, when I do my SMT III Chronicle LL Magic/No Crithax/TDE/No Masakados run i’ll make sure to extend this fight by 7 hours.
Trust.
The brave magic soldier makes his way through the conception, I could not imagine taking Lucifer on with just magic
This game really isn’t meant to be beaten with a magic build holy shit 😂
It is, just Lucifer is the exception
@@kichiroumitsurugi4363 The magic damage formula is just.....F***** beyond beliefs. Peak damage except for Magma Axis, Wind Cutter and Ragnarok would never be achieve. The more you level up, the worse spell get and Magic could not crit for some goddamn reason.
@@zhaoyun255 That isn't actually as problematic as you think - magic skills are backed by something greater than crits or Focus - boosters
@@zhaoyun255 recently I started to wonder. Was nocturne designed to punish you for any form of grinding? Like what would be other reason why leveling up literally makes you weaker in almost every possible way
@@gren_3352 Yeah, Agility and physical accuracy became less relevant the more you level up. It's better to have Incense instead. Booster was such a waste of a slot since you are essentially need to now when to swap out between element booster.
I also started thinking that the interns they hired had some resentment toward the dev and give us the MOST ABSURD formula for magic compared to physical. Funny that the only thing that benefit from Lv up was physical damage improvement. The rest of the stats got punished by lv up for no apparent reason. Hard Type mod fixed this issue and I appreciate that mod even though the mods also has some flaws like Full moon encounter or you have the 2 stage buff/debuff at max when the enemies still got 4 stages.
Just took him down with few focus/freikugel crits :3
Ah ok. I was in a loop with him for awhile using a magic built. I guess he isn’t meant to be beaten with magic build LMAO. Everything was a breeze except the final final boss in my run. Honestly i thought i was doing something wrong!😊
you legend
you did the unthinkable. congratulations!
Now time to do hard type magic build on hard good luck
I was working on that but it's been a few months since I've played HardType
@@power0029 I see well at least you died multiple times at random encounter.
Repel strats go brrrrrrrrr
Sadly, Magic in Hardtype is OP as shit. The formula was change to remove the levels penalty, concentrate, pierce works on Spells so Magic is just better than Physical in every way.
@@Noahs_Chair Well, not for Demi solely due to the Masakados requirement, since Gaea requires 24 Strength anyhow, and unless you grind like crazy, no way in hell are you able to spend spare points into Strength just for one of the magatamas.
Nocturne was such garbage compared to the rest of the timeline
The gameplay is fun at least
????
