Which Primitive Glue Is Best? #3: Milk Paste Glue
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лют 2023
- Glue is incredibly useful for a lot of different projects, but what did they use back before modern glue? In this series, I explain how adhesives were made in ancient times and find out which one works best.
In the third episode of this series, I make casein (milk paste) glue. How well does it work? Which one is best? Find out in video five of this #howtomakeeverything #shorts series!
Its wild that the whole "kids eating glue" thing started with glue being made out of food, and then glue stopped being made of food but kids just kept eating it.
Guess kids weren't as dumb as people assumed lol. The kids that ate the "foodglue" had some sixth sense pointing them towards food that no one else knew about. The kids that continued eating it once it was no longer food? Well... that kinda explains the downfall of our society, doesn't it? Common sense quickly became not so common, and all that.
@Gen L your take is reaching a conclusion that you wanted using the information available which helped reach your point. If you used all the available information, you would have reached a much different conclusion. Read my other reply above to see what I mean.
@@StabbyJoe135 lol ghost post
@@StabbyJoe135 with how long it took for you to type this you could've just said what you said in your "other reply" ain't nobody got time to go through all the comments to find yours 🤣
I think kids eat glue because theyre kinda dumb and don't know if its edible
Wait, so that old glue is technically edible?
I think so, at least when it's fresh. Might have to do a tasting followup
@@htme how many glues total?
I did 5, might do some more if there are any good suggestions
@@htme It's super cool that you interact with your audience like this.
@@htme okay thanks
This makes so much sense! I figured the cow image referred to a carcass rendering process (like the idea of sending a horse to ‘the glue factory’). It never occurred to me it was a more friendly option. ‘Eating glue’ was probably better then… for a couple emergency calories anyway lol
Thought you were gonna say "next I'm gonna make glue out of a cow" 🤣
Why is that funny? I didn’t get it. They have been making a strong wood glue from the gelatin of cows for centuries.
@@iteerrex8166 Because it connotes using cow meat to make glue. But also that somehow glue made from cow bones is superior to other primitive bone glues.
The fact that it's nothing at all like either of those makes it funny. I personally thought the first seeing the title, then the second thinking about it more before watching.
I never knew you could use milk curds to create glue!
Glues are a great way to learn about chemistry and how things are held together in nature. If you ever wondered about the mechanism, the answer teaches you about molecular bonds.
dude clenched that udder like it owed him money
Most people never learned to milk a cow. For most people, this is obviously the better choice
This comment 💀
That's literally how you have to clench your hand. You basically force the milk down the teat with your fingers.
You gotta grip the shit out of it
You could have used milk of lime (aka calcium hydroxide in water) as an alkali it makes the glue more resistant, after drying the free calcium hydroxide converts into calcium carbonate changing the ph and solubility making the glue more permanent and forming a matrix with the casein. It was used on some models of a ww2 wooden aircraft de Havilland mosquito to bond the veneer inside the plywood that composed the frame of the plane
I was about to get mad, thought he was gonna leave us hanging like SO many people do with these shorts 😑. Nope, he's just taking his time, going slow and drawing out the suspense! I hate to admit it, but I'm *super* invested in the outcome.
Naw I dont want to have to come back and check for results should have been a normal video, man lost a sub.
Elmer's -- mystery solved!
I was literally looking at my bottle of Elmer's earlier today and wondering "why is that logo a cow?"
Can't wait to see the results
Honestly, at first, I thought these shorts were kind of teasing, but now it's just building to the suspense, I gotta see which one holds up best!
I'm betting on the first one made out of pine tar, ie the caveman glue.
@@kevinpotts123 Pine pitch is surprisingly very strong. Can be used by itself in stone, bone and antler weapons and still holds very firmly even after heavy blows.
Try medieval rabbit skin flue used for fletching
I'm kinda surprised he didn't try a skin glue derivative.
And for traditional, wood panel icons.
I saw a guy on TV make rabbit skin glue and it was insanely strong
I think this is the first short I’ve actually followed up on.
Never knew glue used to be made from some food products, I always thought kids eating glue was especially dumb since I only ever knew of the modern stuff
Try egg yolk. That stuff is sticcckyy
this makes the old stereotype of the one kid in kindergarten eating glue make more sense. at some point in the past it was essentially just cheese lol
Ready for the comparison!
One of my first experiments with adult supervision. The glue I man as a child from a Mr. wizard book long time ago.
It was also the predict glue for shield making
I like this channel, subbed for sure. Can't wait to see more primitive ways to do things. Very cool and good emergency knowledge.
With strength being of importance, wouldn't hide glue succeed by far? How would you waterproof it?
I been watching this guy for like 2 years
I use casin spray as a totally indoor-safe aerosol graphite sealant. I really like it and it's cheaper than the stuff I used to buy from W&N without the carcinogens. That stuff still works really well, but it's not practical without a spray booth.
I thought there was a cow on the Elmer’s glue because they used and ingredient that came from cow hoofs kind of like how they use hoofs to make gelatin. But your casein/milk reason seems to make more sense lol
You also have to consider that the application of the glue is very important to its performance
Neanderthal: hey bro wheres the baking soda?
So to make this, first you make Cottage Cheese and then you mix your Soda Ash or Baking Soda. Something that might interest you, If you make plain Yogurt and strain it, it becomes Greek Yogurt in a few minutes and letting it hang longer it becomes Cottage Cheese.
Oh can’t wait for the results!
It's also similar to making a base plastic
Waiting for the results!
Is there a way to preserve this kind of glue? If there is, can you please specify the ingredients to use and the amount needed as well
So this was a cheese and baking soda glue lol
Why can't I find This as a long form video?
I used the same “milk glue” to sandwich homemade paper together (I learned from you) into multiple layers to make dr stone carbon fiber, if I made a big enough sheet I could’ve made a stab vest, it was so tough just from a couple layers i couldn’t stab through it. Have Yet to shoot it
Hide glue is almost without a doubt the best primitive glue known. It’s incredible, it can nearly go head to head with tightbond 3.
Is that why my great grandparents glue tasted better than glue from Walmart? I knew something was different

Putting up street posters you can add canned milk to the wallpaper paste to make them very hard to remove...
please write the recipe 🙏 you've done it well!
Damn now I'll never know how they held up
So where's the full video?
So that's why there's a cow on Elmer's glue.
Funny enough the great wall is made from sticky rice as glue and well it's still standing.
I don't recall if you made it before, there are people who make casein 'plastic' but it's not very durable
This is some of your best “eating glues” very important class of glues, along with your huffing glues, sniffing glues & finally your sticking glues
I could smell it through the screen
Ah so that's why there is a cow on top of the Elmers glue, makes sense.
Pitch and or straight tar is likely the best as they're water resistant where much of these glues are only good if the material and glue itself remains dry.
Both tar and pitch are very handy for torches and fire accellerants and for aiding in building fires quickly.
Also great for bindings like fastening arrow points and spear tips to their shafts.
I need more videos please
Have you ever considered working in experimental archaeology?
For gluing wood it’s just flour and water gets hard as a rock. Has been used for things such as kitchen cabinets. Might not be as useful outside.
Could you write the composition of the substances from the video, I didn't have time. what amount of those substances?
Please just release 1 video, it’s what everybody wants. You can keep the shorts up but please 1 video.
Egg whites next please!!!!
"Paste eaters" ~Seth from The OC
also, we (my family and I) believe my lil' brother is allergic to casein
I'm allergic to this stuff. Everytime I tell people I'm allergic to milk they think lactose... nope.
I always just assumed Elmer's had a cow because the glue was made from cow gelatin
I’m guessing the first one will hold 😊
Is that why kids eating glue was always something wrong heard about
That explains everything. Don't eat the glue.
If only it was possible to make videos longer than 1 minute. That way, you wouldn't have to make multi-part videos that leave you hanging.
Just another way to protein max, thanks for the tip
What about glue made from animal tendons?
Do the bone glue
It's spelled "quesin". That's the name of the compound in the milk.
I wonder how rabbit hide glue compares to these three.
It’s wild that glue could have been made with cheese and soap
(I know it’s a rough hyperbole)
wait so this one is just farmer's cheese with baking soda?
So Egyptians made mozzarella before Italians
Bro made paneer 😂
Wow so cool I know what I'm doing With my beath milk
Running boards for the new new videos
Am I wrong, or is white glue also pretty old. Not stone-age old, but it's been here a hot minute.
Ah... I seem to be wrong :D. I got confused by the fact that school glue happened to be this milk-based glue back in the day.
So you're telling me Elmer's glue tasted good cause it was basically cheese? 😆
I heard this was done in the Victorian times
What are you snacking on?
I’m sad I had to search through shorts to get the full story.
The fact you didn't clamp any of these makes this test irrelevant
Why three parts?
I’m experimenting with shorts with 60 sec limits to cover smaller topics I didn’t think would perform well enough as a stand-alone regular video.
@@htme I see, personally I'm not a fan of cliffhangers on shorts.
@@htme Not a fan of cliffhangers like this either. Would've gladly watched a full video of this.
i'm surprised you didnt make a hide glue.
It’s been 4 days, no updates no regular videos what’s going on with you?
What about hide glue?
So that's why there is a cow on it. I thought it was because it was used the same way as a horse.
Doesn't milk with lemon make tofu?
I subbed to see the result please 😄
Try make manure glue
What’s up with food being used for glue? The caveman glue made sense but the wheat and this one don’t to me
I have a question: of what is he not able to do.
Bro just made cheese
Why is this a series of multiple shorts? It's youtube just make it a video and have a short for promo if you want to feed the algorithm gods. If the topic takes more than a minute to cover in the detail you want to cover it...maybe it shouldn't be a short.
This is the kind of thing that makes me go from "Oh this seems like it could be a neat channel" to losing all interest I would have ever had in subbing to the channel...
Why dont you try making hide glue
The intro makes this a annoying. But I want to learn about glues.
Also weight on the blocks would be better.
I thought glue was made out of hooves??
That intro repeat is aweful after 3 times 😅
Why not make a whole video instead of those short
Gym bros rn:
It’s been 2 days.
wait, that mean, we ate glue (because its cheese) all the time..??
No love for good'ol animal glue? nothing like boiling up some rabbit and fish, we've been using it for 4000 years so old enough?
Dude, I need to know how this goes, come on.
