Returning to the Headwind Airbus A330 in Microsoft Flight Simulator

- Following a recent update, we take the Headwind Airbus A330 from Norfolk to Laguardia for a test flight - finishing with the famous "Expressway Visual" approach to runway 31 at Laguardia. The weather DID NOT HELP lol.

That was an interesting flight. Very fun to watch. I’ve have never done a cold start with an airliner yet. There’s a lot to that. Great video.
It's identical from a systems point of view to the A320.
Albeit this is not a study level rendering of the A330, it is an incredibly fun plane to fly. Definitely one of my favorites.

whoa! didn't even know there was an a330 for msfs2020! neat. i'm madly in love with the fenix a320/pmdg737 though..perhaps this could pique my interest

Yep - it's pretty good - seems far too light though
Nice job, nice video. The nose wheel steering is not linear on the 330…it’s exponential…the more you rotate the tiller the greater the rate of rotation of the nose wheel. Your comment that one must be careful with it suggests the developer has modeled it correctly.
More recent versions of the FlyByWire aircraft simulate the tiller setting the direction, and the nosewheel moving to match the directed direction - it's pretty cool :)

I would have liked you to have left the A/P on to see how the L-Nav would take it around the curved R-NAV approach.
Also, if you had activated the APPR phase on the PERF page of the MCDU then the auto-thrust speed would have targeted V-APP (and therefore you would not have needed to manually reduce the speed)
There's a lot of things I could have done :)
@@jonbeckett By the way, I took your exact flight and flew it in the FBW A32NX (same MCDU) and using the autopilot. It automatically went in the Approach phase as it flew those final RNAV waypoints (so my advice above was incorrect), and then it was targeting V-App speed without me having to manually activate it.
However, I missed the threshold and overshot the runway. I think in retrospect I should have used the "FPA" mode set to -3 degrees slope during the approach.
Where did you get the plane and how can I get mine?
Was that the stable or experimental version of the new update, if I may ask ?
I really enjoy the new version, yet at times I have to switch to heading mode for a while because the MFD is stuck on a waypoint behind me. Direct to doesn't work either untill I reach another waypoint ahead.

I'm an Airbus aficionado through and through and I have flown many great Airbuses in X-plane. You must have tried out every model available in MSFS, in your opinion which one is the best of the best? 🤔
The Fenix is widely regarded as the most accurate (of any home simulator).
@@jonbeckett I bought the Fenix a while ago, but I put it away to rust behind the hangar, because it will not let me set up my hardware the way I want to. Maybe I missed something, I'll give it a second try.
@@jonbeckett OK, so I finally got everything sorted out and I'm making my first flight, CYUL to KORD. Everything is good... after getting the calibration hurdles out of the way!
Wonder why no one ever does the A340 family. FSX/P3D, it seemed like the only Airbus all these devs could develop was the A320. In all the years of the previous iterations of MSFS, we never once got study level A340's. Not even the A330. Best we got with the latter was from Aerosoft I believe.
Still missing;
B747 (PMDG will have one for us in about 5 years from now despite having two versions from the past.
B757 (this one is shameful. One of the most popular amd common airliners and never had a true study level plane)
B767 ( ONE. It was great but very, very dated, even by FSX standards)
B777 (PMDG will probably need another year to complete it but *sigh at least we know we will be able to buy it soon)
B787 (Can't fly the default one, even with it's Kuro and Heavy D mods. Again, we'd be lucky if we got one within the next 3 years.
A320 (PLEASE NO MORE but we'll have about 3 of the bloody things within the next 3 years)
A330 (This year we'll have a decent one to fly even if it isn't study level)
A340 (one of the most unlikely iconic airliner ever built; love me some Flying Pencils but not a single one since EVER and seems like not a single capable dev team likes the A340 family so will probably have to wait another 10+ frigging years before one is announced and abandoned lol smh
A350 (Not fussed but interesting aircraft nonetheless.
And finally, the A380. I'll take the FBW one and be happy with it given how amazing the FBW team are.
I hope my expectations are subverted but if experience and historical context are anything to go by, PMDG will start working on niche planes the vast majority don't care for (DC6 for example) and forget the 757/767 and 787 even exists.
ToLiss make the A340 for X-Plane.
@jonbeckett TBH, I l have never considered X-Plane until now. I need to try X Plane out. Been away from the Flight Sim World for around 7 years since I thought MSFS was was a problem-free, headache-free, contstant troubleshooting-free, better version of FSX/P3D but boy was I wrong coming back into it with a i5-13600k x RTX 4080 rig. Think I'll leave commercial aviation alone for good if X-Plane is the same experience as MSFS and get into DCS.

Yeah - I think the model is off. It doesn't have momentum.
Also speed on touchdown was like 100 kts?
@@kattn01 That's been fixed :) To be honest, you can land at far less than 100 knots in the 737 600 :)
@@jonbeckett nice! I didn't know that, slowest I've been is probably 115 in the 600. But I thought for the A330 you'd need a slightly higher speed than the little 600. I assume it is unusual to land at 100 even in that.

Hey, nice video! My autothrottle isn't engaging when I'm putting the detent to FLEX :/
I believe you have to be in the climb detent when using auto throttle, I'm not 100% sure though!
Flex is just for takeoff I thought.

Autothrottle only works in the CL detent.
