  • Time Consuming Ep #6 "Sentimental" by Porcupine Tree deals with the tension built between rhythm and harmony, and the power of musical context on our rhythmic perception.

    For 10 or so years, I'd always known something was off with this song but never tried dissecting it, so I'd never realized it was anywhere near this intricate. Thus, you just blew my mind. Keep it coming man.

    @10:14 - actually, if you want to hear a "regular 4/4" with these chords, listen to the song "Normal". It's pretty much just an alternate version of this song with exactly the same chorus (although they do sneak a couple of 7-bars in there).

    Harmony and rhythm have a 4 on 3 relation. (4 on 3 polyrhythm). That means the harmonic rhythm is faster than the main rhythm, that’s why the piano is not mostly played on the downbeats of the drums. It’s very tricky because at first we hear only the piano which is played on 4 and we have the illusion that these notes are the main downbeats. When the drum part enters it confuses us because it is played on 3. Its downbeats are the truly downbeats of the song, that’s why the piano pattern disappears after a couple of bars. I am pretty sure that this idea was brought to the band by Gavin.

    What is impressing, is first the job you did to explain this song's intro.
    But also the fact that this rythmic "trick" flows very easy to the ear when you listen to the song. I never realized there was something "strange" until today and you explained it in a very easy way to understand !
    Thanks !

Currently I am familiar with this song and I tune my head to the correct rhythm just from the start, using the subtle chord changes; but I remember that the first time it was the same confusion and analysis. There is a similar interesting 4/3 polyrhythm in "Language" by The Contortionist (2:20 in the Rediscovered version), where the hi-hat plays the 3 pulse while the guitar plays the 4, and what's interesting is that the guitar motif is 6 notes long, so it only resolves after 2 motives, i.e. 12 guitar notes and 9 hi-hat beats (the original version adds a bit more complexity by starting the polyrhythm syncopated instead of on-beat, it aligns after 6 notes and only then every 12 notes).

    Looking at the chords stabs without the bass notes on the piano makes the assessment somewhat incomplete. The bass notes actually making feeling and playing it far easier.

    • @andrewlong7578
      @andrewlong7578 3 роки тому +1

      To explain, I think of it as a 16th note bass note followed by a 8th note chord. I think of it as a bar of 6/8 followed by a bar of 5/8. I suspect that intellectually Steven Wilson intended the two meters against each other but likely feels it as accents in 4/4 as Gavin Harrison does.
