What is a Good Mindset for BJJ Competitions ?

- Having a good mindset for BJJ competitions is tough. Competitions kick up the anxiety and the nerves like almost nothing else does. Not to mention we're all a little different.
When I was younger and newer to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu I would compete and I always felt like i underperformed. I would watch my matches and in most cases I felt like I was better than what I displayed on the mat.
As I'll share in the video. Many times I was too concerned with everything else, other than how I planned to win. I would be afraid of letting people down, afraid of the other Brazilian Jiujitsu competitors and just focused on all the wrong things. When I would compete with this mindset I would be so nervous to pull the trigger and go for my techniques.
So what is a good mindset for BJJ competitions or what's the best mindset for BJJ competitions?
Again, we are all a little different so the idea of "best" is different for everyone in Brazilian Jiu jitsu.
But in this video I share what mindset has worked best for me and helped me reach more success as a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Black Belt than I experienced at any other belt. The mindset involves focusing more on yourself, your abilities and how you plan to win.
This has helped me reach a much more focused and efficient state of mind when it comes to competing in BJJ.
Thanks again to Max for the question. I hope this video helps brother!

Perfect timing! I have my first competition this Saturday
Good luck!
Thanks. I'm on the upper end of the experience spectrum for the beginner division. I roll pretty even with teammates who've been doing it for 2 years so I'm feeling really confident about the 0-6 months division.
Got bronze in gi white belt and no gi novice. And the only guy who beat me in white belt was upgraded to blue belt afterwards. I should be getting that first stripe soon
Congrats on placing in the competition! How were the nerves?
Horrible the first match. Was told it was an hour ahead of schedule but it ended up being a half hour late. After that I settled in and just focused on executing techniques and it went really well. Thanks!
Won my first blue belt competition, this video really helped. Thank you Chewy
The sound of your voice is comforting as I sit outside this tourney that is about to begin😅
nice how’d it go
Chewy - I absolutely love that you don't edit out the part of the video that is "messed up" by cars, bambulances, etc. So authentic!
This is a question I've been grappling with for weeks, my first competition is this Saturday. Your timing couldn't be better brother, helpful as always!
How'd it go brother?
Chewjitsu Wow, thanks for asking, I took home silver in Gi and No Gi. The guy I lost gold to in Gi had ten years of Judo experience and destroyed me, how he was registered as a novice I do not know. There is a judo guy in my gym so I immediately recognized by his stance and his grips what I was up against. I tried to pull guard and failed, he got side control and tapped me to a bow and arrow. In no Gi I took second because the guy who beat me forfeited due to injury, his knee got hurt in his bout, otherwise I would have taken bronze. I'm a super heavy weight and at 245 I was the skinny guy, LOL. 3 from my school competed, we took home 4 silvers and a gold. I'll be posting videos of the matches to my channel in the coming days if you care to watch feel free to subscribe. God bless brother, thanks for your encouragement!!!
@@lp2496 bro no excuse just take the lost and he was a better man then you , that’s fine .. plus his judo would only be advantage standing up what happen to the bjj on the ground
Random thought: watching Chewie's videos feels a bit like watching the old Elliott Hulse's videos back in 2013. Getting that out of the way, thanks for your ideas and perspective! Love your channel and listening to you speak about jiu jitsu. :)
Tomorrow at 9am I'll be fighting for the first time. Thanks for the video and wish me luck.
Hope it went well!
Update : judges didn't let me fight because of 0.6kg more weight, i was so so disapointed, but that's just the start of my story, i actually blame nobody but my coaches, they never told me how stricte judges can be in terms of weights, but i learned the lesson, nobody will do things for you unless you do it yourself. And i'm ready to compete on higher level after seeing yesterday's event.
You need to blame nobody but yourself
@@BadrEddineSaber Wrong attitude.
Once i told myself that signing up to a comp means ive already won, this helped me alot
Great advice I’m 48 but feel so strong and fast but come competition I go from blue belt 3 stripe straight to white belt and totally forget everything I need to win because I worry about committing and looking a dork but your right brother better to lose trying than not 👍👍👍
Tomorrow I'm fighting in my first competition EVER (in any sport) at a round robin tourney in MD. I just wanna show up, feel okay, and do jiu jitsu. Thanks for the advice! Love your channel!
Love the idea of going for it and losing but putting on a good show
Thank you for sharing your hard earned knowledge coach. You are a genius
Had that tournament I mentioned a week ago and was fairly content with my mindset. I am still trying to figure out what exactly my style should be, but I'm trying to force my opponent to do a technique exactly right and defend if he does not and I want to be very active and take initiative all the time. For my next tournament I want to focus on pressure on top and steady progression from dominant positions to submissions. Nerves are getting better very quickly btw. I'll let you know how my upcoming matches go.
You're body will figure out your style. In the beginning it's hard to really nail down your exact style.
And the nerves getting the better of you is pretty normal brother. Don't let it both you too much.
I look forward to hearing about your future success. Just keep training hard grinding away!
First tournament this weekend! Thanks for this.
I agree with everything you said when it comes to juijitsu, thank for this video I'm gonna change my style and go after rather than be scared!
Competing next month for the first time and I feel the same way about focusing on myself and paying more attention on having a game plan than anything else.
I appreciate what you do immensely!
Thanks Maxim!
Go out to hit your techniques successfully, love that!
First tournament as a blue belt 💪 This helped
Preparation cures anxiety. Then go out relaxed and have fun!
I always jam out to your intro lol love it man.
Side note- Im 135lb two stripe white belt and I'm tired of getting smashed in side control. The ghost escape doesn't work for me. I like your teaching style.. Do you have any tips?
The Process he has a book on his website
I used to always do the ghost escape only and people caught on. Try mixing it up with a couple other escapes.
Thanks for this! Competing tomorrow and was getting a little bit nervous this has helped me focus on what I need to do
howd it go?
@@josecoyt1602 yeah managed to compete absolutely fine and was happy with my matches. Managed a default bronze! But happy with myself
Hey chew! Do you have any tips on how to get a better base? I feel light on my feet and I get swept easily when I'm in full mount :( . #whitebeltproblems
Stay chest to chest with the person , sink into it
I needed this
This helped a lot! Thank you :)
You're welcome!
Thanks man! I have a tournament this Saturday
Absolutely Excellent Advise ! ! !
Thanks Carlos!
Excellent. Thank you for this.
Many thanks all the way from the Netherlands Chewie! I really like the philosophical point about the art-sy approach. I have a competition at the end of this month, I'll let you know how it went.
I'll see you in Ede then!
Thanks again for the question Max. Good luck.
Got my blue belt a year and a half ago, training 3-4x a week and I feel very strong in any gym I go to against other blue belts and even purple and brown belts at times. I competed 4x last year and I can’t help but I have incredible performance anxiety when I compete, I drop in skill and it’s like I don’t know anything that I’m doing as opposed to in training. Just doing some research right now to try to figure out how to fix this. My only solution that I’ve come up with is to train more and compete more often until I’m comfortable, but I don’t know even the last competition I went to I got smashed so bad and I think it’s because I approached it too relaxed to try to mitigate the anxiety.
Great advice, thank you.
What is your opinion on cutting weight for BJJ tournaments; much like wrestling. Do the same principles apply?
I used to cut weight for BJJ tournament and MMA fights.
Now that I only do BJJ. I don't. I just go in comfortable. Well rested and well fed. Ready to rock and roll.
Very good. THANKS!
Great video
Heater
my mindset in competition... Keep it playful and have fun
Thanks man
I f****g hate loud cars too xD
I do err on the side of treating it like a roll
Bro you are like bjj Yoda to me.
Chewbaka
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I’m a white belt. As much as I’d like to believe I do, I ain’t got no style.
Well if it isn't the bjj version of elliot hulse himself. Thanks for the vieos dude!
jake bronson lol thanks . . . I think.
I’m too relaxed, I’m not good enough to be as relaxed as I am
I’m a lot better in competitions than training
Should I compete if I know I'll just get killed??
Seb Crakpot but how do you know?
@@Chewjitsu I guess I don't. Sometimes I feel I'm learning fast and do well then someone come along and submit me multiple times so fast I don't even know what happened. Been grappling for 4 months, I feel there is not enough positions I am comfortable with, sometimes I know what I am doing sometimes I'm lost and stall. There's a competition in 2 months...
Honestly, even if you know you might lose or get beat, it is still a great learning experience. A few months ago I competed for the first time and lost every match, but I learned a lot just by going out there and doing it and my Jiu-Jitsu got tremendously better.
Love your content Chewy. Lets start a GoFundMe to fix that tooth =)
Simple do more competitions! Lol
Answer is don't compete. Problem solved.
