Destructive White Belt Mindset VS Productive Black Belt Mindset for BJJ

  • In today's video I share the big difference from how I trained BJJ when I was younger and how I train BJJ now that I'm a bit older and wiser. I'm sharing this because I received a question from a young guy who says he gets embarrassed when a teammates whom he beat, adjust and beats him.
I resonate with this question because I struggled with this same situation from White Belt to Purple Belt. Most of it stemmed from insecurity but it was a real issue. As I gained some age, experience and some tips from my coaches I started changing my perspective on training.
And in the video I'll share my Black Belt focus on training which has been super useful.
If you're struggling with a similar situation then I hope the video is useful.

I was venting to a rolling buddy of mine on how everyone was progressing faster than me....well he said as he smacked me on the head was " you're being lazy and stalling your own game because YOU won't put it all on the mat that's why everyone is passing you"....that coupled with your advice about focusing on the journey is what I needed to hear.

It's so hard to not get into that mind set of competing w your training partners... I got into bjj strictly for the fitness and I still think about it sometimes as competition until I'm just trying to survive rounds or just trying not to puke

I wish I could give this 2 thumbs up. Had my best ever class this week where I felt like I was getting somewhere and then closed out the week by getting absolutely demolished yesterday. In my mind “losing” every roll. Came home mad and learned absolutely nothing from it.

What a great 👍🏼 attitude!!! I’ll be honest, it depends who gets me - I’m only a 2-stripe blue, but if a higher belt catches me in a submission I’m usually laughing afterwards in appreciation often asking how he did it...a while back, a white belt caught me and I told him per usual great job and chuckled but the truth is it ate me up for a while (too much ego) - at least it got me to really think about it and work on closing up that hole in my game.

I started jiu jitsu 2 months ago. I started at 41 years old and completely of shape.
There are nights I go into the gym and I am just not getting the moves down and I'm not just getting smashed but I'm giving up simple things I shouldn't. I run out of energy, nearly hyperventilate. I leave feeling like crap and wondering what the hell I'm doing there.
And then there are nights I go and a see very clear improvement. I roll longer, I do better, I recognize the positions and what to do and nail the moves. And I leave feeling great and cannot wait to go back again.
It is a roller coaster. It is one of the hardest things I've ever done. And, so far, it is completely worth it.

Really needed to hear this message I've been training for a month now and all I was worried about was my ego and winning all the time but I finally realized that jiu jitsu is made to be fun and for everyone to enjoy it helps with self defense, techinque, and health and fitness not to make enemies or for winning now I know that I can go in today and get better by losing because what is being the best mean if you can't learn something new and try it on someone else

When I came back from a rib injury my main training partner mopped me and all I could think was "I need to get better soon because Iron sharpens Iron and I'm no good to him if I'm talc."

@Ben Passlow oh there's always value to tailoring training to those under your level (and no shame being the lower level because you learn a lot there too) ALA Joe Rogan's Blue belt hunting theory, but since he's the Ryu to my Ken we both enjoy pushing each other to the next level from a similar standing. We got back there after a couple months, since I'm a maniac who enjoys training as often as possible and he has real adult responsibilities.

You don't want your training partners to be losers, you want them to be the best they can be too. In order for that to happen, you have to have the humility to grow with them, and not the arrogance of thinking what was yesterday is today.
Grow, learn, and enjoy the journey. Otherwise you're just going to be miserable.

Chewy, I do have a question though, I do BJJ with my brothers. My older brother is a blue belt and he's pretty good. My younger brother and I are both white belts and I already know he's better than me because I feel like he's confident in his abilities. I've rolled with both of them and I know they're confident. My question is how do I gain confidence in my abilities and how do I not be so timid?
