Thanks Mr. Young! As usual I see it a bit different, but similar. In my gym we do train a part of the Self Defense. We do some self defense concepts in the Gi Beginners program and in our NoGi we have as well a Beginners Course that includes Self Defense and all Members should regulary go there. I think BJJ with 0 Self Defense makes no sense. However I am mainly on the sport side of things and enjoy the rapid devellopment of techniques. And I see many benefits of competition. 1. dealing with adrenalin 2. serioseness in training while preparing 3. win or learn...a loss in acompetition makes you rethink that loss over and over again. You analyze your fight and activly search where you screwed up 4. team spirit. BJJ...come for the skill stay for the family like brotherhood the Restaurant or bar after competing is awesome I love it.
Thanks for the video coach. I was just thinking about competition. I know how you feel about it but is there anything that competition GIVES you that you can't get in the gym? Like any benefits you have noticed? ie I haven't been able to replicate the Intensity of competition in my gym. Another is that it really solidifies that your gym is a team. When you go against your own people all the time it's hard to think of yourselves as a team, in competition (especially against rival academies) it's easy to see the comraderie.
Easy way to find holes in your game, my first tournament I realized I couldn’t pass half guard well at all, my next tournament I realized other holes in my game, it’s nice to compete with new people with new styles
