The Debaser shortsword is my favorite weapon in Oblivion. I’ve made so many characters over the years that had their own story about that sword. It just looks so good.
I maintain the idea that Thoronir has a good idea of how the goods were obtained. He reacted to Agamir's provocation when he threatened to expose Thoronir's "scheme" as if he had something to hide. At the very least he had some sort of plan to use ill-gotten goods as a source for his merchandise. Maybe he thought Agamir was going to rob a trade caravan, maybe he thought Agamir would contact the Thieves' Guild. Whatever the case, he definitely seems to have had some suspicious plan.
It's silly, but I like the Bruma recommendation quest for the mages guild. I think J'skar and Volanaro are funny, and even though they are picking on Jeanne, they're not hurting her or trying to get rid of her. I think it's the most light-hearted of all the recommendation quests.
That’s a really good one too! It’s funny, I dislike going through the whole process of enlisting into the guild, but I do enjoy each individual quest!!
This is why Oblivion is so fantastic. This is your favorite quest for legitimate reasons, just as how I have my own favorite quests, and in such a vastly large game, everyone can have their own favorite anything, sparking exciting community discussions, and maybe helping people learn more about the game, or just Elder Scrolls lore in general.
I’m playing it again for the first time in like idk 9 years or something and having a blast. Also back when I was a kid and played I never got to play shivering isles, so I’m stoked to go through all the DLC for the first time!!
I think my favorite quest and/or questline will always be Shivering Isles, it shows off just how colorful and fun Oblivion itself can be, has a great opening to the dlc itself, and even gives you a decent weapon that i always get.
Oblivion has the best side quests of any rpg ever. There are so many iconic quests, it’s hard to choose one. Even a relatively simple one like this is done so well!
When you mentioned Oblivion scaring you when you were younger, I felt that in my soul. I remember playing it in middle school back in 2010-11, in the months before Skyrim came out. I failed to understand how the leveling system works, so I would end up with a gimped character and then just struggling with several early game quests. I just couldn't finish the Mages Guild recommendation quests, and others like Through a Nightmare, Darkly and Origins of the Gray Prince to name a few. I would always just do the ones I was most familiar with constantly, including this one and the Anvil Fighters Guild quests, plus around 10 arena fights. Then, I would level multiple times in a row. As you can imagine, the game would just become an absolute slogfest when I came up against bandits with Dwemer gear, trolls, and flame atronachs. When Skyrim came out, I switched to that immediately, finished it over Christmas break. Afterwards, my dad let me use his laptop to play Morrowind. To this day, I still don't understand how my pre-teen self was able to finish it without looking anything up on the UESP. To be honest, that's probably a gaming accomplishment I'll never top.
I always sprint to talos plaza after the converstion before Agamir arrives there and every time it is unlocked. Got tired of waiting all day, so i tried it once and it just works.

Can't blame you for thinking being seen would restart the tailing process. Other quests in this game did that so it makes sense lol And the good ole LOTR Easter egg haha. The cloak, ring, etc. It was a great nod, I remember this one. Ironic that Thoronir gives you a graverobbed item for disposing of the grave robber. Also a bit ironic the Temple will use the clothes of the dead to give to the living. I agree that there is a huge nostalgic aspect, especially for the people here who played this game while growing up. You're right about it being a bit lonely at times too, but it's serene in it's loneliness. Great video as always Bard 🤝. My very favorite sidequest is probably gonna be The Painted World.
Very good point with the ring and the clothes! Didn’t even really think of it from that aspect either 😂 A Brush With Death was one of the quests that I had done for the first time whilst on this UA-cam journey! Such a fun and creative idea!
i jsut loaded up oblivion the other day because i was watching your vids and HOLY COW, didn't even know about this quest and just ran into for the first time and enjoyed it just as thoroughly as you did. couldnt put the thumbnail to clue until thoronir was just brought up hahahaha
I'm not sure which quest to pick out as my favorite, because the entire Dark Brotherhood questline is just so fire. Unfriendly Competition is a classic though, great choice on your part!
This game is nearly 20 years old and I completely missed this quest, even amongst the insane amount of playthroughs I've done over the years. Soon as I get off work in the morning I'm starting this lol
This was indeed a memorable and cosy quest. The thing I most hated about Oblivion was its levelling system and the way levelled loot is handled. Once I realised that you were required to have a high level before allowing a lot of these items to spawn into existence in order to get its strongest variant, this fact completely ravaged my enjoyment of early game in every new playthrough. That, and knowing that endurance was the only stat that did not provide gains for earlier levels retroactively. What I mean to say is, when a quest like this has a cool and easily accessible unique item like the debaser, chances are that a lot of my characters would burn out before quests like this reached their priority list. Thank god for the work modders do.
I wrote a top 50 Oblivion quests list once, with this on the 43rd place if I remember correctly. It probably deserves a little higher. The reward isn't that great because drain endurance doesn't reduce enemy max health as it should. My top 3 will always be Whodunit, The Ultimate Heist, and Baiting the Trap, and the rest of the top 10 would be filled out with Ghosts of Vitharn, Through a Nightmare Darkly, Paranoia, The Lady of Paranoia, Sheogorath, Order of the Virtuous Blood and A Shadow Over Hackdirt.
From a story perspective i think my favorite quest is entering Mankar Camerons paradise to confront him. Just the grand scale of things is freaking cool. Feom a gameplay persepctive it's The Collector. Just fun to try to temember where all the satues are and ask myself, "Was it this ruin or another one starting with a W."
I really enjoy the Order of the Virtuous Blood and Information at a Price quests or almost any Elder Scrolls quest involving vampires. They seem to be convoluted and a little on the darker side, like Laid to Rest in Skyrim. Although a good quest involving vampires doesn't come to mind for Morrowind, besides that one Vampire Clan quest, but its pretty basic. Vampire noises did scare me in Morrowind, especially as a low leveled character.
We need to remember that if technology allowed it, this city would be massive. The green emperor way would be easy to murder someone and reseal a grave back up without anyone noticing.
Thoronirs cheaper prices is represented by his low mercantile skill (40). You can haggle him more aggresively than most other merchants in the imperial city. There's still a handful of traders that are even lower at 30.
7:20 Thoronir bought out and took over the 'Imperial Longarm' spear emporium. That's why he's evil, why he must be ousted, AND why polearms aren't a weapon type in Oblivion.
Sorry, the first city you find yourself by, and then the market district is immediately plagued by a conspiracy? Yeah there’s a reason this is the first quest I do after I go across the water to kill Umbra 😂 Edit: it doesn’t hurt that Thoronir is very likable imo

There should be a part 2 of this quest where you report the Society of Concerned Merchants to the Office of Imperial Commerce for engaging in anti-competitive cartel-like behaviour
😂😂😂 that’s too funny, on my Xbox, there’s an area in the imperial city I can’t go to anymore because there’s too many duplicated items, unrelated but related 😂

Jensine’s society always sounded like a cartel to me. Besides, how is an honest adventurer to make a living if selling things previously owned by recently deceased is a bad thing?
What is it in this game and every antagonist in quests somehow knowing we'll catch them in the act? What's even more questionable is why do they all have to monologing their plans? It would be so much better if we can catch them unaware and/or they just begin fighting us. Something anything to break up the repetition.
First, that's not how you pronounce "macabre." Second, I always thought it was interesting that a cabal of price-fixing merchants were upset that a new merchant refused to play ball, especially considering that he's essentially engaging in reselling the exact kind of loot the player tends to dump on *every other merchant in the game.* Like, they could literally sell the items you sell to them just like Thoronir would and make a killing just like he does. EDIT: It's pretty obvious that Thoronir knew what was going on. There's no way Agarmir could lock you in the crypt himself when he's all the way across the room when you enter and doesn't approach until you're well away from the door, and as he said, he set up a trap for you. Now why would Agarmir assume you'd just randomly choose to enter that specific crypt? He had to know you were coming, and who could have informed him? The only other person to know where both he and you are is Thoronir, meaning he's the one that told Agarmir the jig is up, they came up with a plan to take you out, and Thoronir directed you to the crypt that he himself locked behind you after you entered. How you think he's simply negligent is astounding. Even when he's espousing his "surprise" about where his goods come from, it sounds rehearsed and insincere. All you really managed to do is force him to get a new supplier and have justification for increasing his prices so he doesn't lose customers. You were played.
Forgive me for saying this, but I have to defend Thoronir. Your judgment of him is very unfair: in his meeting with his contact you can clearly tell that he is uneasy with this situation. He even wishes to end it, but couldn't dou to threats. There is no ill will no bad intentions hidden here. The characters, actors and the quest itself is telling us that. Also je did do everything he could to fix his mistakes. Please, distrust and negativ mindset are never the way forward. They only serve the malicious and blind us to the truth.
I can understand why someone would like this quest. It actually has a few interesting rewards in it with the weatherward circlet, Debaser, and the unique mace hidden in the tomb as it were. And it's not bad to be sure. Just a few things I wished they'd tighten up with the quest myself. Like they say the Copious Coinpurse is undercutting all the other merchants. Even undercutting their cost. Suggesting that Thoronir should be selling things at like, 30% the value or so before you solve the quest. But he's not. Kinda sad because I'd like that as a lever for the player on the quest. Having this merchant with random wares that are cheaper than any other, or knowing he can do the right thing, but it will cost you a cheap source of whatever the lottery was going to give you that day. Make it something where you are losing something either way (morality or potential coin) to make ti feel more impactful. But yeah, checked it myself a few times. There's literally no difference beyond what you can personallly haggle. As Thoronir has 40 in Mercantile as opposed to say Jensine's 30 in Mercantile, it actually means you can get better deals from Jensine easier both for buying and selling. Other thing? At least to me the quest kind of presumes that Jensine's "Society" that is trying to actively price fix and control the Imperial City's market is a good thing. Which... yeah. It's hard for me to get behind as a cause. "This one merchant isn't letting us gouge everyone on prices!" just is one of those tone deaf moments for me in Oblivion that... I'm not sure if was some of their humor that missed the mark for me, or they are looking at it in a weird way, or what. Like I know the video tags to the Society as a "union" when mentioning it but I see it less as some union working for rights, and more a bunch of people trying to corner the market and price fix like they're Oil Barons. And the fact that they're price fixing robber barons (to me, or at least they WANT to be) makes it hard for me to feel bad that they're losing business. After all, they're not Labor fighting for rights against Owners. They're Owners trying to increase their profit margins by price fixing in the Imperial City. I suppose the fact that I overthink things that much about the quest is a sign of the good qualities of it. But part of me just wishes I could have been there to tighten those screws on it and really get it down in development.
Probably my favorite quest in Oblivion? Well that's hard to say. I think I have a soft spot for the "Brotherhood" Quest in Bruma. The one that starts with the dead vampire being investigated. Has a nice mix of things, working with town guards that are (for a video game) surprisingly competent even if they got played in the end. For example they didn't just trust some guy saying "Dude I'm totally a Vampire Hunter and that's a vampire so let me kill him". They had evidence of vampire attacks previously. They had run a background check on him having Skingrad report that he was legitimate (even if they were wrong too, but hey, can't blame the Bruma Guards for Skingrad sucking at their job). You get a nice bit of investigation and interviewing people. A nice little confrontation in the end. And a bittersweet bow put on it as everything gets wrapped up nicely. It's short, sweet, and does a decent job. Even one of the few quests in the game you can fail. As when the Guard says "You have to get to Boreal Cave in a day" they MEAN you have to do it in a day. If you slag off, quest failed. Dude got away with everything.
Maybe they ran out of time, so his inventory is stuck at the same price because it would need to go back to regular prices after he joins the society? Anyhow, that would be a good idea for a mod, going back to some quests and adding more depth to them. Would be extremely time-consuming, though.
@@marcelosoares7148 Yeah I think it's just an engine limitation on reflection because all the games just have fixed values and the only difference in what you buy/sell for is based on character skill (and merchant skill) and reputations/dispositions. I know for example Skyrim has a mod that provides regional prices for merchants. So like Silver Ore and ingots are (relatively) dirt cheap in Markarth (because biggest source of silver in Skyrim) as an example. But the way that game does it is by adjusting the prices universally every time you move into a different region as a way to get around (So not like A Markarth Merchant is designed to have cheaper silver, but when you load into The Reach by fast travel or traveling by foot it does a sneaky change to prices behind the scenes for every merchant in the world). Still just something I wish was there. And I hope the idea of actually having Regional Trade economies or the idea of particular merchants being cheaper/more expensive is something they can work into the next game. Lots of interesting potential with that.
Definitely one of the more memorable quests. Really made npcs feel connected
Exactly! A very great way to put it!!
And Thoronir is Boromir from LotR - first he betrayed the group, then he redeemed himself

You were played.
pssst you should do Skyrim quests hehehe
I definitely plan to sooner than later! 😉
5:33 did your GPU poop itself? The sign on the counter is so low-res you can't even read it o.o
I'm not used to the new pfp but hey I missed the content
😂 I hear ya! It’ll set it in a bit that’s for sure!

Haha best types of comments! I love it!
