    I bought my 1985 V65 Sabre brand new and put over 80k miles on her before storing her about 5 years ago. There was nothing wrong with the Ol Girl, I just didn't have time to ride. Since I have more free time now, I've decided to get her back on the road. About a month ago, I took her to my local dealer, the same one that I bought her from, just to have her checked out. I knew she would need carb work, tires and a complete service, but I wanted her looked at by professionals in case there was something that I missed. I watched this video yesterday and it had me a bit concerned. When I went to pick her up today, I showed the video to the tech that did the work. He said that in some cases, this IS a good modification to make, especially if the bike is typically ridden at low speeds and low rpm. However, in my case, since I'll actually be riding her the way she was meant to be, it's not necessary or recommended. I always rode this bike hundreds of miles at a time on 2 lane highways and regularly put her through her paces back then and that's what I'll be doing now too. The funny thing about this whole story is that when I unloaded the bike at the dealer, both the owner, a man in his 80's who still rides a V-Max, and the tech, in his 50's like me, both saw her coming out of the truck and said "Finally, a REAL bike for the shop". It's 70 degrees today and I REALLY wanted to take the Ol Girl for a spin. I didn't do it though since there are still a few things that need attention. I did turn her toward the road and fire the engine. I think my Harley owning neighbor pissed her off when he said "So, that rice burner does run". I said quietly, "Easy girl, we'll show him" as she seemed to rev her engine, or maybe I did it? He's a poser anyway. If his bike has to go more than 50 miles, it's on a trailer. He does wear all of the Chinese made Harley clothes and boots though lol!

      The problem happened to magnas because cruiser guy's like to sit around and idle and sport bike gals like myself ride. I doubt my 85 sabre will ever need the oil kit.

    Thank you for this vid adikxx83
    I've been reading comments left on V4 forums around 2010-2012 and the general theme seems to be that these mods are not necessary. But the logic being applied seems to be based upon hearsay and not a lot of sound mechanical knowledge.
    However, I've also read a number of very old resources from the early 1980s and 1990s where a great deal of common sense was applied to this issue.
    As an engineer who did my early work in the experimental side of aeroengine design, I can see the merits of this mod immediately.
    One thing the 2010-2012 forum posters claimed that those advocating these mods fail to offer any proof of the low oil pressure going to the heads. They ignore the fact that the OEM system feeds off the low pressure side of the pump.
    Others claim the issue is not due to low pressure, but low oil flow. This is academic because higher pressure can deliver more oil.
    The source of the oil in the OEM system is also not clean. This means that a cleaner source should be sought.
    The actual causes of the waer appear to be many. Firstly, the design of the cam housings are not align bored, meaning the cams are not supported as well as they should be.
    There were heat treatment issues on early cams.
    The advice by Honda to get the engine to running temperature before putting it under load may possibly also be a contributing cause, because most wear occurs before the whole system is well lubricated. This situation is likely to be worsened by low oil flow and low oil pressure to the heads.
    Applying the original cam adjustment appears to mean that the gap reduces considerably when the engine reaches operating temperature, and perhaps more so when run really hard. So applying the later advised wider gaps is obviously a good idea.
    Finally, the use of very good quality oil and changing it regularly is essential.
    I've just acquired a USA spec VF750F V45 Interceptor in very poor condition. It needs a full ground up restoration. I think it's worth it. I will of course be fitting one of these kits. Thank you again for sharing.

    I see you actually pictured kits from a couple of different suppliers. The one with the red hose clamp and black sleeving was the DRP one(In fact, I remember when we took that photo) The other was from different supplier(apparently the one you bought) I forget his name. DRP was the original one. We (DRP) also sold the drill and tap mod, although, because it involded drilling and tapping into the main oil galley underneath the engine, it wasn't as popular. That was a long time ago.

      Know of any good mods to get lots more power out of one of these? Do you have any idea how much hp you can put through the V65 before parts start breaking?

    One thing to Pay attention to as well is making sure that the lines are well secured to the motorcycle and don't rub on the frame. I just bought one of these the other day and 1 of these oil lines is bad because there is not enough protection for the lines from the frame so make sure you do that if you do this mod. now I have to find one of these hoses and replace it

  • @blaine7726

    I have pitting on my 83 V65 Magna cams but it isn't enough to be a major issue. The engine vin doesn't match the frames so mileage is unknown. My 85 V65 Sabre had none at 48k miles but I installed the mod anyways. I'll likely install it on the Magna when I do a full restoration.

    • @anthonyo5363
      @anthonyo5363 3 роки тому +2

      Honda engine number weren't tied to the VIN. In fact, I do not believe they had any paperwork with the engine number on them. We used to rebuild the V4 engines, and, just to cover our butts, recorded the engine numbers of every motor we bought for parts or sold as a reman. The cam issue was well documented, and Honda threw a lot of money at the problem. Somewhere there is a picture of of one of the 80's Honda V4 race bikes, banked over in a corner. You can see that is has a drill and tap oil mod.

    Been into a few of these bike over the years and have witnessed the damage that can be caused. The V65 is a designed cruiser. So, in-order to take advantage of this bikes potential, I would install this Mod! I like to have both options, WOT or cruise! Leave the throttle blipping to the sport bikes! Thanks for the video. Peace!

      In the video, you say you needed to use a different oil filter, specifically one from a 1500cc Goldwing. I read through all the specifications for the product you just posted a link to, and they never mention that a different type of oil filter will be needed. (?) If they fail to mention that important fact in their sales pitch/item description, I'm not sure if I should buy from them. I want to order this mod, but I am finding the inconsistency between your video and their description to be confusing. Is there a better place to buy an oil mod? I don't mind paying a little more for a source I can have greater confidence in, and that would include the braided hoses you show in your demo. Thank you for the informative video in any case; I was previously unaware of this problem with the 1984 Honda Magna.

      Thinkb4utype hi bud. I bought my kit on Ebay. I think there is only one seller offering those at present so i presume it's the same people. I was told that stock Magna filter won't work with this kit and gold wings filter is the one to go for but if none of that info is posted where you saw it then maybe it's BS and Magna filter will work just fine. Drop an email to people who currently have those kits foe sale and ask. I'm now intrigued myself to be honest.

    i guess the 700cc magna too (v40 or -42/43 as they're also called) suffers from this oil starvation.. i read somewhere that models from '86 and onward don't have this issue, can someone confirm this?

    • @Adikxx
      @Adikxx  7 років тому +1

      valde falisto smaller 500cc Magnas nad interceptors don't suffer from this issue that badly but sadly 700cc Magnas will be in the high risk group.
      There are some opinions circulting on the net that 750cc "Super Magnas"(those have 4 exhausts pipes pointed high up and full casted rear wheel with drum brake) are free from this problem.
