Good Morning Ken, Boy, I know about the knees. I was a welder for 42 years and paying now for not wearing knee pads. Electric fence, motion lights, and a camera with motion sensor to hold off the bears.
It's good to have enough wooden materials to make a house, that's great, because wood is a durable material, while being very environmentally friendly, wishing you good health.
Ken, you may want to put up an electric fence around the chicken coop to help keep those bears away. I'm sure Al Lumnah could advise on how best to do that. And, on another note, I'm finding myself wanting a tiny house, too! I'm loving those pine walls!
I have a bear living across the road from me with two cubs. I have claw marks on the top of my garage can. I don't put food items in the garbage until just before collection in the warm months. I don't have bird feeders as those seem to be bear magnets. It might make sense to put electric fence run off of solar around the coop to keep predators at bay.
Doing the knees one at a time is a wise decision. I’m facing having one done eventually. Follow your surgeon’s instructions TO THE LETTER and let it heal, and be sure to request physical therapy before and after the surgery. I’ll keep you in my prayers.
I had a right hip replacement in 2022 at 57, I tried the shot also and lasted about 3 days, now I’m havin trouble with the left side, arthritis is the culprit! Good luck on your surgery, you’ll definitely feel better just a lot of rehab and healing time! Them pesky bears, yogi and boo boo! The tiny house is looking great!
Hi Ken. If you have the option, get both knees replaced at once. Mine were done separately but my wife and sister had them replaced in one visit. 1 trip to the hospital, 1 recovery, 1 one therapy session instead of doing everything twice. You'll be back to jumping around in no time. As I mentioned one time before, do the therapy that they assign you at home. You'll be glad you did.
Breeding season, now for a month or so, for bears... so they are active! Little ones get pushed out, sows get bred if its their year! Boar are out searching for mates!
Put you a small electric fence around your property. I mean, you can get those solar powered ones and just put it around the prompting. Or you don't want to come in, and i'm guarantee they won't come in once they touch it, they'll stay away
So what you are saying, is that you won't be doing too many of these 🤸♂🤸♂for a while, nor any of those old football practice maneuvers🙃As far as that bear goes, I thought you had Big Foot👣 on speed dial to take care of stuff like that☎Lovin the tiny house .... when can I move in🏠😂 Well, it's "hump day" so I hope you have a great day, and a wonderful rest of the week .... take care Ken & family👍🏻✌🏻🐓🐔🍅🫑👣
We have something of a chicken taj mahal/ft knox combo. 450 sq foot enclosure for 6 hens including fencing for the top as we’ve got Many hawks. But our biggest lesson was that after our dogs passed the foxes (and deer) come way closer. And we hardly have bears, and only the occasional coyote…that we see evidence for (SE PA, near valley forge)
Hi Ken. The boarding looks very nice & the flooring shade will blend in well. Sad to here about the bears cousing a problem hope all keeps well. Take care with those knee`s.
The Bears are looking for food this time of year they love to eat pet food and water. The ones I've came across here in Washington state don't like human encounters.
Ken, I hope knee surgery is better in the US than in UK. As I had knee replacement back in 2016 and that was the worst decision I have ever made in my life, I still have as much pain as before but my knee doesn't bend very much and I can't kneel on it. My other knee needs replacing but have declined to do so..I have reduced the pain in my natural knee by gentle exercise and drinking a table spoon of extra virgin olive oil twice daily morning and night. best of luck Del UK...
To predator-proof the chicken pen, replace all the chicken wire with welded wire with 2"x4" openings. Also, frame the top and use the welded wire there.
When you get your electric fence charger get one that hits HARD! A tingle isn't going to deter a bear. You want to hear that yelp a half mile away the first time it touches the fence. Glad you will be getting knee relief. Now you have to plan some projects for the "down time" or you will go stir crazy. I can't see you just sitting about for a few months.
A couple of electric wires around the chicken coup with a solar panel to charge it a little zap just to let it get the message not here bear, I believe that All has them on his homestead.
I had so many compressor air guns that I never went with the electric before retiring. Man, the electric are so handy but I do like the heavier gauge that the compressor guns use.
Your a brake man ken. 2 new knees!!. And in the next few months, in England it would be 3 to 4 years before you could get in for that surgery!! Best wishes ken.
Also, some people and put black pepper around the property just around the pumping line down the property line and all the way back around. And that's they get there and they smell that pepper they don't like it. They run away
I have a trailer that I use to haul my bugeye Sprite around with...but no more....My nephew is going to make it into a camper....I put him on to this build to give him some ideas....very timely Ken....ty
Ken, I know how difficult the decision must be to have knee replacement surgery. My daughter, a Certified Athletic Trainer at the time, she now is a DPT (a doctor of physical therapy), convinced me to have both knees done at the same time. I know, it sounds crazy, but it was the best decision ever. One operation, one round of physical therapy, and two brand new knees. I know that most Orthopedic Surgeons are not willing to undertake a twofer, but it’s worth asking them about the possibility. Good luck! Tom
My wife had her first knee replacement on Nov. 6, 2023. (left side) She is now waiting for a hip replacement on the right side. She is a retired Physiotherapist. You now have something to look forward to. 😊 . . . Your "tiny building" is coming along in fine fashion.
❤ Awsome Job your doing even with Bad Knees!👍🤩 I know how you feel 👍I had Bad Back& Shoulder and had surgery done on my Shoulder 🙄That was 20 yrs. Ago & I've always wondered Part-time! Im retired now still work 15 hrs. A month! Your doing Pretty Good Ken!👍✌️🤞🙌🙏👌🌟🌻🤩🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
My husband has 2 bad knees. We've done the shots. Next, insurance wants him to have the gel injections. He is scheduled for first shot this week. After we've tried the gel injections and see how much relief he receives - then insurance will allow knee replacement. Best of luck with knee replacements. We have so many friends and family with very good results with knee replacements.
FYI get yourself an Ice Machine for knee after surgery Nehoo has one that is programmable for run time, temperature, off time, and flow rate. The hose has good fitting with two O rings talk with your doctor. At one time they would order one for after surgery. The pine 🌲 is looking great. 👍
I had both knees replaced at the same time. My thought was that pain is pain. two done at once was not twice the pain.. After the replacements i told the doc that had i only had one done, i wouldn't have had the 2nd.. also told him i was extremely brave (ha ha).. Doc said i would be back to work in 6mos.. Now those people must indeed be brave and pain tolerate. Glad I had it done...good luck
Looking Good Ken ! Good luck on your surgery plans. I hope it all comes out great for you. May you have a very quick recovery. The bears know your chickens are there. If they are within ear shot they can smell the chickens. If your bears get too close for comfort you will want to power up your chickens with an electric fence for safety. The bear will learn quickly that investigating your chickens means getting bit with electricity and leave them alone. Many people around here have to electrify their chickens and bee hives. Less than a mile from our house a friend had his spring feeder pigs attacked by a bear. He didn't think he needed to hot wire the new pigs but quickly found out different.
Perhaps it's time to change those spring latches on the chicken house to something more substantial that bears can't figure out? On the knees... my wife had both done and was getting around enough on the 2nd day (1st day home) to get her own coffee. Went back to work (7 weeks out?) while waiting to get the 2nd knee scheduled. (during covid) After the right knee she was able to drive locally at about 3+ weeks. She never used the walker we borrowed but did use a cane when outside the home. A grocery cart was enough added stability to do shopping. Also, toilet seat booster and raising up a few key pieces of furniture till you can bend at least 90 degrees. The best advice she can give is doing the PT BEFORE surgery. It will make the recovery go easier if you are staying in shape.
❤I love the knotty pine ,bathroom is starting to look very beautiful!!! Love the flooring color also...prayers you find comfort for your knees soon until you decide on your upcoming surgery.until rest when you can...
Love the knotty pine. Put it on the inside wall of the living room. I had my left replaced yesterday. Doing fine so far. Start PT tomorrow. Your tiny house is looking superb. We'll Ken you just keep on keeping on
Good morning Ken, that little stumble with the knee is all too familiar to me. I’m almost there also . Cabin is looking great.I used the same flooring in my mini cabin, easy maintenance and looks great. Enjoying the series!
$$$$$ Ken, not knowing your insurance, but maybe have both knees done this year to avoid having to pay your deductible twice. And try to have as much time between each knee operation as you can. I had my left knee done 3 years ago and now the right is acting up now.
So strange your talking about your poor knees Ken, I empathise, I'm just starting to have problems with mine, it's no joke, quite debilitating at times! ❤... On a funnier note, I have to mute you when you're working with that insulation material, that squeaky noise goes right through me and makes my toes curl, like nails down a black board lol!*! 🙃🤣
Sprinkle cayenne pepper on the ground around the outside of the chicken pen. Can help keep animals away and reapply after rain. It is cheap at dollar store.
HEY KEN, THERE IS AN INJECTION CALLED SYNVISC THAT HAS WORKED WONDERS ON MY WORN-OUT KNEE. FORMER AUTO TECH. IT WORKS VERY WELL. BUT YOU HAVE TO REDUCE YOUR ACTIVITY. YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT KNEE REPLACEMENT OFTEN DOES NOT GO THAT WELL & CAN BE VERY PAINFUL IN RECOVERY.
Ken of the Stead! I enjoy your videos. Orthopedic was the word 😂 I just turned 70 and that happens to all of us.. I use Home Depot 1.5" husky knee pads all the time. I am up and down like you are. And have had 3 knees replaced. Don't leave home without one (or two). You will be glad you had your knees replaced. Years of pain GONE!
I had my left knee replaced 3 yrs ago. My right knee 2 yrs ago and my left shoulder 1 yr ago. I am finally able to kneel but very carefully. I was thinking of that when you kneeled to install the first piece of wall covering. Good Luck! 🌲🦌🦞🫎👍🏻
Good Morning Ken,
Boy, I know about the knees.
I was a welder for 42 years and paying now for not wearing knee pads.
Electric fence, motion lights, and a camera with motion sensor to hold off the bears.
ELECTRIC FENCES,ELECTRIC FENCES

Your attention to detail is still amazing. 👍👍👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Impressive insulation! Light a candle in the winter and a glass of iced tea in the summer; you're good to go 😂. No HVAC needed!
I had a right hip replacement in 2022 at 57, I tried the shot also and lasted about 3 days, now I’m havin trouble with the left side, arthritis is the culprit! Ken it’s coming along nicely before you know it you’re gonna be done ✅ 😮😊❤
Time for some black bear pie, lol.
Haha yes
Breeding season, now for a month or so, for bears... so they are active! Little ones get pushed out, sows get bred if its their year! Boar are out searching for mates!
Interesting
There goes the neighborhood!
Haha
You’re welcome enjoyed it. God bless.
Thanks you too
I had my hip done at NE Baptist, orthopedic hospital only. Still have the original device 28 years later.
great stuff, Ken. It's always exciting to see the finishing materials start going on a build.
It sure is

If you the bears to stay away, put up an electric fence around the chicken coop area.
What a great detailed build and an excellent education. Been following you and enjoying it. Thanks, from Hells Canyon, Frank.
Thanks

Wow
Had a big bear on my porch a few nights ago, The bear decided he didn't like my flower box, so he tore down, but at least it made for a nice video
Hi Ken. The boarding looks very nice & the flooring shade will blend in well.
Sad to here about the bears cousing a problem hope all keeps well. Take care with those knee`s.
Oh no. Hope nothing happens to the chickens, that would be unbearable.
The t&g looks so beautiful, is well worth the weight.
The Bears are looking for food this time of year they love to eat pet food and water. The ones I've came across here in Washington state don't like human encounters.

Like the pine wall coverage. The light colored pine will give the tiny house a larger looking space.
Yes. Thanks
Hello Ken the tiny house is really taking shape now looking forward to the next episode keep up the good work but please be careful with you knees
Thanks
A couple of electric wires around the chicken coup with a solar panel to charge it a little zap just to let it get the message not here bear, I believe that All has them on his homestead.

I had so many compressor air guns that I never went with the electric before retiring. Man, the electric are so handy but I do like the heavier gauge that the compressor guns use.
Nicejob getting that insulation nice and tight. a couple of people and a stick of wood in the burner will heat that up nicely.
Your a brake man ken. 2 new knees!!.

You could use a 12 year old assistant. I worked for a carpenter when I was 12 and learned more then I did in college. I was cheap to hire too..
Do enjoy the moniker "Kenstead" it is a nice place to visit on line, thanks.

I always liked knotty pine. Looks good.
Me too thanks
Looking good Ken.
Thanks 👍
My cortisone shot only lasted two weeks as well.
Getting my knee replaced in July! Glad I only need one, for now at least.
Gooooooooood morning, Ken! Bears are scary... i get them in my back yard now & again. I can't set trash outside until pickup night :(

Ken I would secure the doors on the coop better. A bear could open them very easily.
Walls look great.
A bear could tear the whole building apart. I’ve had it happen on another outbuilding

nice job on the inside siding

Love the looks of the pine walls! It's going to be very cozy in there when it's done! ❤

I hauled a lot of lumber and did a lot of climbing..
We got'em too here in upstate New York. Caution prevails...
Yes definitely
Gabapentin is an anti seizure medication that is excellent for pain relief with no major side effect and is not a narcotic. FYI
Cool thanks
It looks like it will be a cozy space. Hope the knees hold out. Thanks for the video Ken.
Thanks I agree
Hopefully everything will go well with your surgery and you can get great rehabilitation afterwards…
Thanks
I’ve had two knee replacements Ken. I did them about as far apart as you. It all worked well.
Wow. Glad they worked well for you
I hope they weren't too far a part... or you'd walk bow legged : )
You are brave getting both knees replaced. Long road to recovery. You will have plenty of time to work on your trains while recovering.

You've got that right brother, that is beautiful !! Thumbs up and love, from S. California.
🤩😍🥰❤❤❤
Gooood morning,one day at a now,have a bless day😊🌾🌻🌻🇺🇸
Hey Ken some composting toilets need an outlet behind unit for operation. I hope your model doesn't require electricity? 🤔
Nice work as always, ways Mr Ken’s Karpentry.
Thank you kindly
Put up an ELECTRIC FENCE
Did you purchase the tools for setting the flooring? There is a special block for closing the long gap and another for closing the end gap.
👍
Put some of the good old music that you like dusk and dawn motion lights
Pine scented rags ammonia
When are you putting a pipes underneath the tiny house.
What kind of fastener are you using Ken ? I’m getting ready to put some t&g my self.
Those darn bears. Things are looking good. Sorry about your knees but you worked hard all your life. Thanks Ken!
