    Good Morning Ken,
Boy, I know about the knees.
I was a welder for 42 years and paying now for not wearing knee pads.
Electric fence, motion lights, and a camera with motion sensor to hold off the bears.

It's good to have enough wooden materials to make a house, that's great, because wood is a durable material, while being very environmentally friendly, wishing you good health.

Ken, you may want to put up an electric fence around the chicken coop to help keep those bears away. I'm sure Al Lumnah could advise on how best to do that. And, on another note, I'm finding myself wanting a tiny house, too! I'm loving those pine walls!

I have a bear living across the road from me with two cubs. I have claw marks on the top of my garage can. I don't put food items in the garbage until just before collection in the warm months. I don't have bird feeders as those seem to be bear magnets. It might make sense to put electric fence run off of solar around the coop to keep predators at bay.

Doing the knees one at a time is a wise decision. I’m facing having one done eventually. Follow your surgeon’s instructions TO THE LETTER and let it heal, and be sure to request physical therapy before and after the surgery. I’ll keep you in my prayers.

I had a right hip replacement in 2022 at 57, I tried the shot also and lasted about 3 days, now I’m havin trouble with the left side, arthritis is the culprit! Good luck on your surgery, you’ll definitely feel better just a lot of rehab and healing time! Them pesky bears, yogi and boo boo! The tiny house is looking great!

    Hi Ken.
If you have the option, get both knees replaced at once. Mine were done separately but my wife and sister had them replaced in one visit. 1 trip to the hospital, 1 recovery, 1 one therapy session instead of doing everything twice. You'll be back to jumping around in no time. As I mentioned one time before, do the therapy that they assign you at home. You'll be glad you did.

Put you a small electric fence around your property. I mean, you can get those solar powered ones and just put it around the prompting. Or you don't want to come in, and i'm guarantee they won't come in once they touch it, they'll stay away

We have something of a chicken taj mahal/ft knox combo. 450 sq foot enclosure for 6 hens including fencing for the top as we’ve got Many hawks. But our biggest lesson was that after our dogs passed the foxes (and deer) come way closer. And we hardly have bears, and only the occasional coyote…that we see evidence for (SE PA, near valley forge)

Ken, I hope knee surgery is better in the US than in UK. As I had knee replacement back in 2016 and that was the worst decision I have ever made in my life, I still have as much pain as before but my knee doesn't bend very much and I can't kneel on it. My other knee needs replacing but have declined to do so..I have reduced the pain in my natural knee by gentle exercise and drinking a table spoon of extra virgin olive oil twice daily morning and night. best of luck Del UK...

When you get your electric fence charger get one that hits HARD! A tingle isn't going to deter a bear. You want to hear that yelp a half mile away the first time it touches the fence. Glad you will be getting knee relief. Now you have to plan some projects for the "down time" or you will go stir crazy. I can't see you just sitting about for a few months.

Ken, I know how difficult the decision must be to have knee replacement surgery. My daughter, a Certified Athletic Trainer at the time, she now is a DPT (a doctor of physical therapy), convinced me to have both knees done at the same time. I know, it sounds crazy, but it was the best decision ever. One operation, one round of physical therapy, and two brand new knees. I know that most Orthopedic Surgeons are not willing to undertake a twofer, but it’s worth asking them about the possibility. Good luck! Tom

My husband has 2 bad knees. We've done the shots. Next, insurance wants him to have the gel injections. He is scheduled for first shot this week. After we've tried the gel injections and see how much relief he receives - then insurance will allow knee replacement. Best of luck with knee replacements. We have so many friends and family with very good results with knee replacements.

Now those people must indeed be brave and pain tolerate. Glad I had it done...good luck

Looking Good Ken ! Good luck on your surgery plans. I hope it all comes out great for you. May you have a very quick recovery.
The bears know your chickens are there. If they are within ear shot they can smell the chickens. If your bears get too close for comfort you will want to power up your chickens with an electric fence for safety. The bear will learn quickly that investigating your chickens means getting bit with electricity and leave them alone. Many people around here have to electrify their chickens and bee hives. Less than a mile from our house a friend had his spring feeder pigs attacked by a bear. He didn't think he needed to hot wire the new pigs but quickly found out different.

  • @rupe53
    @rupe53 17 днів тому +1

Perhaps it's time to change those spring latches on the chicken house to something more substantial that bears can't figure out? On the knees... my wife had both done and was getting around enough on the 2nd day (1st day home) to get her own coffee. Went back to work (7 weeks out?) while waiting to get the 2nd knee scheduled. (during covid) After the right knee she was able to drive locally at about 3+ weeks. She never used the walker we borrowed but did use a cane when outside the home. A grocery cart was enough added stability to do shopping. Also, toilet seat booster and raising up a few key pieces of furniture till you can bend at least 90 degrees. The best advice she can give is doing the PT BEFORE surgery. It will make the recovery go easier if you are staying in shape.
