Cocaine-fuelled driver in 550hp Bentley Continental tries (and fails) to escape police

- A man has been jailed for 18 months after leading police on a drug-fuelled pursuit in his 550-horsepower sports car, which came to an end following a high-speed collision with a police car.
Richard Bowser, of Percy Street, Bishop Auckland, got into his Bentley Continental GT on Sunday, May 23, having consumed a vast quantity of cocaine.
Wanted on suspicion of assault, Bowser was spotted by officers heading towards Tow Law on the A68, where he immediately crossed into the opposite side of the road to overtake traffic and made off from police at speed.
Between Tow Law and Willington, Bowser reached speeds of up to 130mph and was seen to carry out multiple high-risk manoeuvres, darting past traffic and pedestrians at ‘terrifying’ speeds.
One of the pursuing officers later described witnessing a young girl watch in horror as the Bentley careered past her.
Showing no signs of stopping, Bowser was finally slowed down on his way out of Willington when he attempted to take a sharp bend at 90mph, but instead mounted the kerb and collided with a stationary police car that had been waiting ahead of the pursuit at the junction with Oak Avenue.
A police volunteer photographer, who was a passenger in the vehicle, captured the moment that all four of the Bentley’s wheels left the tarmac seconds before impact.
Despite both vehicles suffering massive damage, officers were shocked to see Bowser’s Bentley limp on for another half a mile, still at speeds of up to 90mph and now littering the road with debris, before finally coming to a halt at Low Willington Industrial Estate.
Bowser ran from the vehicle and fled across a nearby field, but was tasered and in handcuffs within seconds, and promptly failed a roadside breath test and drug wipe.
The 44-year-old was later charged with dangerous driving, failing to stop and assault.
Appearing at Durham Crown Court last week, he was convicted of dangerous driving, drink driving and drug driving, and was handed an 18-month prison sentence, disqualified from driving for 45 months, and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £156.
Inspector Ian Leach, of the Roads Policing Unit, said: “Bowser’s actions were appalling, and his recklessness could so easily have had catastrophic consequences.
“He demonstrated a total disregard for the safety of others as soon as he got behind the wheel of his car under the influence of alcohol and cocaine.
“The outcome of this incident could have been fatal, and it is by sheer luck that those he crashed into escaped with only minor injuries.
“It takes far more than a high-performance vehicle to make a good driver, but Bowser’s prison sentence and lengthy disqualification will nevertheless help to protect the public from harm.”
Bowser, whose Bentley was written off in the pursuit, will have to pass an extended driving test before being allowed to drive again.
"Cocaïne-fuelled Bentley driver" describes nearly every Bentley driver out there.
I make sure my driver is always sober.
I get the confusion though because the passenger (me) is actually sitting at the right side here.

That cop was legitimately impressive in pursuit of a much faster vehicle. Well done
It's not that impressive, the Bentley weighs nearly 3000KG, so it is fairly slow for what engine it has. The police cars tend to be lighter and people move due to blue lights.

I believe the UK pursuit cars get remapped for more power too as I saw it explained on a tv documentary a few years ago when they were showing off a new unmarked tuned up Subaru pursuit car being used around the London area
The Bentley is seemingly too heavy to be good in a pursuit as it seems to corner slow and lose any advantage it can gain on the straights. An M5 or a RS6 would have been a better suit for a get away car.
@@E6MND still not that much faster than what the police have though, marginal increase in acceleration. So by calling out the offenders speeding in a restricted area, or putting pedestrians at grave risk of death (for example) they are not only building a case for a catalogue of crimes, they are also providing real time evidence that justifies a potential escalation of pressure on the offending vehicle.
