My parents taught me to surf when I was 2 years old so I never had to go through this struggle. I cannot imagine how overwhelmingly difficult it must be to learn how to surf as an adult. You use so many muscles you've never even used before and you have to think about so many things, where to put your feet, where to lye on your board, where your going and of course staying balanced. Keep with it girl your doing so well!
This is highly accurate. Surfing is all muscle memory and reflexes balancing on an unstable surface. No wave is the same so it’s incredibly hard to master not to mention paddling power building and early morning starts. It changes your life and is highly addictive. You really got to be in the water every day to see progression, which means livin in a beach town or city and having regular waves come in. Thanks for sharing, huge nostalgia hit for me.
Omg I love how well you documented the struggle and fun along the way. I resonate with every detail as a beginner. So authentically funny and heart warming to watch. Thank you!
I am a brand new surfer and I’ve always dreamed of being a surfer too! I relate to this video so hard! Thank you for sharing your journey! I think I will go back to this video many times over my learn to surf journey
Surfing was a struggle for me, too. I was a competitive skier and am an experienced snowboarder. Surfing's much harder to learn. Experienced surfers gave me the following advice. Using this video, here are some suggestions for beginners: Wave count is the key to learning. If you only catch a few waves each day, you'll never get anywhere. Stay in the whitewater until you're ready for green waves. Don't worry about progressing; you'll improve eventually. Volume in your surfboards is essential to catching waves! More volume=higher wave count=skills development. Most surfers are on boards that are beyond their skill level. 1:39 Don't start on a Wavestorm. The board isn't wide enough. Rent a much wider teaching board for a week. Wavestorm is 9' L x 24" W x 3.5" T / 102 L. Storm Blade 9FT SSR MAXX is 9' L x 29" W x 4.4" T / 145 L. The difference is profound. 1:50 Get more surf lessons. Once weekly is sufficient, twice weekly is ideal. 2:31 When you progress to a Wavestorm, use surf wax on the board. Apply liberally! 2:35 Stay in the whitewater and practice your pop up for your first week or two. Muscle memory is the goal. 4:54 If catching a really big green wave is still beyond your skill, catch heaps of small green waves. Wave count! 6:14 Getting an instructor is a terrific decision. 13:40 I use Shiseido Sun Stick. The tint helps block the sun. Also, surf at sunrise. 16:00 Of course surfing is going to be harder than those things. I mean, come on. 19:15 Have a good time all the time. 19:56 Time doesn't determine skills development. It totally depends on your wave count and your attitude.
Thanks so much for sharing and breaking down the tips by time segment!! Yesss! I probably should have mentioned that I definitely didn’t start on a wave storm and agree they’re way too narrow. (I was on a storm blade for the first few times but didn’t film it ) thanks again for watching!
@@karitarrI see heaps of fist timers try to learn on a Wavestorm. It’s certainly possible to go that route, but it’s much easier on a wider board. I’m convinced that wave count is the key to learning. That’s what all the experienced surfers told me over the years.
omg your channel is criminally underrated! so engaging and i can tell that you put a lot of thought and effort into all of your videos! you earned not only a sub but an enthusiastic fan :D
Been skating boarding for 10 months and i feel the same way " Battleing to survive, and not having fun " I am such a super beginner , and surfing caught my attention because of the swiimkng aspect ( i can't swim ) and the beach life ( never seen a beach ) and just the environment and wantiing to feel and enjoy nature ...Watching others experience ,has me happy for them, but i am still in a dark place .
I feel ya on the dark place man woof. Literally everyone who learns goes through it, just not a lot of people talk about it or make entire videos dedicated to it lol :) you’ll get through it!!
I had a long statement to make here, because I was able to teach myself to surf at age 50 in a few days, but I'll just give you one bit of advice. On almost all of your rides, you have a slightly "open" stance. Your front foot is slightly to the left of the centerline of the board, your back foot slightly to the right (that's from your perspective, looking down the nose of the board.) That's very, very old school. The old time Hawaiians used to surf that way, but that's because, No. 1, they were on huge, 16-foot boards that were more like canoes than boards and you could put your feet almost anywhere; and No. 2, their boards didn't have skegs. So in order to turn, they would actually dip one foot in the water and use it like a skeg. Thus, they learned to surf "regular" and "goofy," and switched from to the other. It probably gave them a bit of an advantage to have a slightly open stance so they could switch easier. There are lots of reasons to have both feet squarely on the centerline, but the main one is steering. With your feet on the centerline, you'll set your rails evenly when you want to turn. All you do is look where you want to go. If you're going down the line (turning so that you're facing the wave) your head will turn, your shoulders will follow, your front arm will come around, and you'll be able to lean into the wave by bending your knees. With your front foot on the centerline, your toes will set the inside rail into the wave, and you'll carve a turn. Whereas in your position, with your foot outside of the centerline, you won't engage that inside rail as easily, if at all. You might have to "shove" the nose of the board over with your hips, which will be awkward, or maybe you'll try to use your back foot to try to pivot the board on its tail, which will slow you down. The wave will likely wash out from under you because you've sunk the tail. Backside turns might be a bit easier in your position, since it's often easier to weight your heels than your toes, but you might wind up weighting that backside rail unevenly. You'll catch an edge and wipe out. I hope you correct this deficiency right away, because it's a habit that could be very difficult to break if you continue on with it much longer.
its true surfing is an extremely long process. I started on a foamie and in 6 months I was already on a shortboard. Which was pretty quick for me, but I couldn't of done it without my dad who has been surfing for 40+ years. I'm now over a year into my surfing progression and I'm still getting better every week.
great video! really well made. Although it looks hard this encouraged me to start learning too. I'm mentally preparing myself to look silly and just try to have fun in the process.
Hey, Just found your video and would like to say big thankyou for making it, very informative for someone just starting out and inspirational to show what can be achieved with dedication
Thallasphobia and sharks prevents me from taking the plunge and doing it, my mind says no but I want to lol. So im researching ways to prevent a shark encounter or attack even tho its really rare. But its important to even just take a week off to refresh the mind and body.
Finally a video where the title of the video is real. It acctually showes progress, the ups and downs from the puppil itself. Plus it shows the begginner must start with a foamy long, not a short board., congrats!!
This is thw best video. I moved down the coast recently and still dont get invited into the water lol it suck. I used to bodyboard. Im starting to get in shape again late thirties so takes a while lol time to get out there and have a go :)
i have a question, when your like in the water and surfing do you need to have the leash on your foot or is that just for when your walking like idk i’m confused
I have dreamed all my life to learn. Did 1 lesson where I was pushed onto wave by instructor, thought it wasnt that hard.. until I try again on my own lolll... never managed to catch a wave myself 😅 that shit is hard
Nice progress. From your outtakes up till day 10+ you struggle mostly because you seem not to know when to paddle when not. What to catch and what not. When you learn to surf its not just about to paddle like a maniac but to read the waves and position yourself in a way that makes it possible and easy to catch waves. It be good advice to sit there for a couple of sets and just watch how they behave. If there are experienced surfers with you watch them closely and see what they do. Btw 15:08 you burned that SUP and its not really 4+ ftmore like 2-3... Anyways good progreas and keep it up. Best sport in the world.
That's one great video, I enjoyed watching it and it really shows how slow the progress in surfing is. Some details are wrong though: 1) that was not a bottom turn, that was just a very slight turn to the right. Bottom turn is when you go to the flats and then from the "bottom" go back to the pick for re-entry. 2) riding the pocket means you follow the pocket, not that you start in the pocket by coincidence and go in the opposite direction: to the peak, which was on the video 3) you've never ridden a smaller board: a fish, or a shortboard, riding huge foamies and fun-boards you can't consider yourself an intermediate An intermediate can ride shortboards and do all basic maneuvers poorly: angled take-offs, bottom turns, re-entries, cutbacks. I am sorry, but that is far far from your level. You did a great progress from a complete newbie to a beginner-surfer, that can catch waves independently on a longboard on a good day. Still a massive work ahead to feel the real surfing. Anyway it's more about having fun than anything else, so as long as you enjoy it - it all that matters! Hope you didn't stop on this.
You are so incredibly inspiring....if someone applies themselves to anything like you did they would probably be insured success. I want to learn to do intermittent fasting and I will use your motivation as a role model!
Surf lessons except for the high end ones where they film and everything are a waste of time. A quick google search would have helped you with your initial nose diving problem. Just angle your takeoff. Easier said than done for newbies but that’s the key.
Not "every" activity in some one's life "has" to be a job... if one cannot take days off when the body demands, the passion would go away... and some times for ever... surfing is to have FUN and not to make it a JOB! We must keep that in mind. Surfing cannot be done with the same level of thinking of the "developed countries", it just doesn't work that way with the ocean, also just 3 months... it takes lots of time...:) nice work
Lol at the mansplaining convention hosted in your comments section. Rad job going after it! Surfing is not an easy sport and super taxing on your body. Keep it up!

She has a lot more to experience, she has experienced about 3% maybe 4% of what surfing is. Sorry but that's the honest truth. Keep going for a couple years then you will really be surfing.
