The writers really did a number on Beales character after growing up a good kid they turned him into a mixture of Doyle from Grange Hill, JR from Dallas and shrieking Scorpio from Dirty Harry whilst undiagnosed asthma suffering Phil turned into an angry self righteous Charlie Brown after producers wouldn't give him an inhaler.
I do think there is a good chance that Ian could later punch Phil because Ian already did try to attack Phil with a pole (only to get battered by Phil), he caught Phil's hand when he tried to grab him, pushed him when arguing about Ben and threatened to punch Phil when he was having a heart attack. Its getting a bit old seeing Ian scared of Phil, the writers need to toughen him up again and maybe make him punch Phil at one point.
With Kathy Beale returning there's a good chance that Ian and Phil's rivalry could get reignited. I hope not though as they are finally getting along. Do think deep down Phil dies care for Ian.

Well he has left him to all but die on occaisions (He found Phil after the shooting and legged it then when he had the heart attack, Ian delayed getting help). Yes, Phil's an arsehole but there are times when you just CANNOT feel sorry for Ian.
