  • We visited London, Old Street, to take a closer look at the team developing Dorico and the work they do behind the scenes. Dorico pushes things to a new level, but what is it really that separates Dorico from other music notation software on the market? Watch Product Marketing Manager and music notation software pro, Daniel Spreadbury, and the team share their thoughts.

    I just "announced" to my wife that I was getting this once it was released. A big purchase, to be sure, but rather non-negotiable :) It appears to me that Dorico will be worth the price of admission just for the page layout / printing options alone! Let alone all of the other wonderful tidbits.... like the forgiving compositional atmosphere. I'm so grateful and so excited.

    Really nice to meet the team. Nice office by the way :-) One meeting per day? Waooh! Steinberg must be praised for taking the challenge in a market dominated by Finale (forget about the shameful Sibelius strategy after the Avid take-over). Am absolutely thrilled by the new features seen on Daniel's blog. Am presently using Finale but can't wait to move over to Dorico. For those who do not need all the bells-and-whistles, will there be a lightweight version like Finale PrintMusic or SongWriter?

    Looks like a killer team for this product. If it works like announced, I will be tempted to switch.

    Great product coming! Nice to see the team in the video.. Now the serious question I have ! .. As a Sibelius user I can use it on my iMac 5k and my MacBook Pro with the same license and works perfectly. I pay it as a subscription for a yearly rate of around £80 per year and have complete support for this product and always get the latest version. Are you guys & girls at Steinberg going to do something like this ? I think you should look into doing something like that. Otherwise having to use a physical dongle license key might hinder and put a lot of people off using your new product, which by the way would kill of sibelius if applied correctly.

    Very impressive work group. I eagerly anticipate Dorico's debut and that I will soon be able to say *#$%&% to AVID.
    Two things though:
    * hopefully chords will be available in the first release (as in a lead sheet or jazz chart)
    * please don't go to the Dark Side with a subscription model for the product
    Best of luck with the development!

    Great video! I am interested in crossgrading to this product from Sibelius 8 after Doricos release. What sound configurations will Dorico have? Will Dorico also be able to play back other configurations like Sibelius 7 Sounds or anything? However, I am very impressed with this future program!

      Hello, Dorico will support different playback VST Instruments as long as they are VST3 and some well behaved VST 2.4. You can find all the answers to your questions at our Doric [pre-release] forum: www.steinberg.net/forums/viewforum.php?f=246

    I am a retired teacher doing a little composing and song-writing. I could not work out to whom your software-to-be applied and in what way I could be assisted by it. I missed the goal of your endeavours and how the user could reach it providing it was his own. Do you have men and women skilled in teaching on your staff?

    Great video, thanks very much for sharing. What I'm interested in is the playback functionality, and how well it works in conjunction with other software... I'm a composer and orchestrator, and the worlds that I live in whether I'm thinking in Finale or Logic Pro are vastly different. It would be wonderful if those worlds could be bridged with this software. This looks great and I really admire this team's attention to detail.

    Back in the early 1990's Music software was really good. You clicked record, dropped down a menu and went into manuscript. Ticked a box to get the Quantise right -interpret it was called and there you had a manuscript that worked. Today these software developers are so wound up in their own world they don't consider the user and add so much stuff that nobody needs that it is almost unusable.A large amount of money down the drain. Sibelius was good when it was on the Acorn but they also went into useless overkill and a upgrade mentality. I doubt this will be user friendly but time will tell. Most people want simplicity.

    • @brodeurgiroux
      @brodeurgiroux 8 років тому +2

      You are so right they should do a simple edition of this software. For some people like me. I'm now using sequel 3 it not totaly user frendly. I strarded with Audacity, a litle to simple maybe but nice.

      Brodeur Giroux Avid tried to con me into upgrading to v8 telling me that there was a special discount. When I arrived at the online checkout, the discount would not be applied! It was only because I checked very closely that I did not make the mistake of upgrading for a higher price than advertised!!!

    The integrated piano roll is great!!! Non of the programms out there now has this feature!!! Can I use all my VSTs as sound-sources in DORICO?
    I think at least the STEINBERG-VSTs like HALION 5, GA4 and the Synths should be supported... (like in the expession-maps)

    I've been using finale for ever, and their latest version 2014 is a quantum leap................ unfortunately backwards! After an infuriating amount of wasted time, I went back to the 2010 version. I've tried Sibelius and, apart from a couple of features, didn't like it at all. I am anxiously anticipating the release of this new program, and I'm eager to try it. It will be interesting to see how it integrates with Cubase (which I'm currently using. Great production program, scoring part, not so much).

    • @JamieClark
      @JamieClark 8 років тому

      Agreed. I just took advantage of the 50% off Notion cross grade, got Notion 5 for under $40 to get away from Finale 2014 but if you use qwerty input (like me) it's a non-starter. Figured on using it as a stop-gap until Dorico comes out. I hope this doesn't get too expensive, it might make me want to switch to Cubase!

    I've been using Steinberg software for over thirty years now. (Since Pro-16 on a Commodore 64) and this news is frankly very disappointing. Back in the 90s, it was necessary to get a special version of Cubase called Cubase Score if you wanted to print sheet music. It seems to me like the same situation will arise again. I guess the scoring facility in cubase will be dropped soon, or at least under supported.

    • @steinberg
      @steinberg  8 років тому +5

      Hello, this will be a completely different product, Cubase score editor will remain and it will be constantly improved.

    • @gerhardbinkele3753
      @gerhardbinkele3753 8 років тому +1

      That's great! I need a score editor when I'm arranging! Sometimes not very often - but I really didn't what to miss it inside of CUBASE. For polyphonic stuff or for choir-parts and so on, it's absolutely necessary to have this editor.
      Even if I feel sometimes like a dinosaur in this world of DJ's and beatmakers when working with scores.
      For printable scores I used SIBELIUS so far - but this is not a must. It would be cool if you could switch between a DORICO-project and CUBASE-project like with WAVELAB and CUBASE in the newest version.

    • @LeeHarbaugh
      @LeeHarbaugh 8 років тому +2

      Any chance this could/would ever integrate directly with Cubase to replace its current editor?

    • @rubengardinerart
      @rubengardinerart 8 років тому +1

      I really want to know this aswell! Can we link it with cubase so we have the power of a score editor and the power of a DAW together, it will be the ultimate music software no need for anything else. :D

    I started with cakewalk 30 years ago at a 20286 compter for free copied and was oke! Ever since I spend hunderds of Euro and hours for programs and learn. The latest was Solar for 150,- VST, Halion, to get nice software.Very disappointing indeed. Nothing worked fine, only Audacity, but is not made for Midi. They said better buy a Mac. Spend many time on basics, drum, Bass on Boss Dr. 550 an old drumcomputer, timeless. But to the subject: what is new at musicnotation? Am I going to spend time for their product?

    It's a rip-off of Sibelius. The totally unusable Masterscore, yes, Atari & Steinberg, doesn't set a good track record.

    • @GREDULUM
      @GREDULUM 8 років тому +3

      I'm a Sibelius user of twenty years, but following recent developments I no longer feel I owe it any loyalty. I'll give Dorico some serious scrutiny and then decide on whether to change. Given that some of the people who developed Sibelius are on this team, and they're working to produce a highly specialised product, there are bound to be some similarities. Don't write it off before it's even left the shed. :-)

    • @zoltanm6445
      @zoltanm6445 8 років тому +5

      Why do you think it's a Sibelius rip-off? It's true that Daniel Spreadbury is a former Sibelius developer, but I'm yet to find any similarities (from what they've presented so far). Dorico has a very different user interface and workflow. To me it all looks very promising. Also, dwelling on 'track records' in the past may cloud one's judgement about the present and the future. I think one of the reasons for developing Dorico is that the current notation capabilities of Steinberg products, such as Cubase, forces people to turn to competitors whose DAW software already integrates well with Sibelius. I hope there will be a crossgrade option.

    • @kelafornia
      @kelafornia 8 років тому

      It's on their website, there will be a crossgrade pricing for existing Sibelius and Finale users (for a limited time) for 299€.

    This is one of those very annoying marketing videos I don't never ever want to see, because it gives me no information at all about the product itself, how it works, where the difference is to existing similar software. So why should I look at it?

    • @getulioprates
      @getulioprates 8 років тому +1
