Good to see you got that up and running in good condition! I don't know why but it seems like the fans just don't spin up very quickly, until the laptop reaches a high temperature. Macs Fan Control is therefore essential so you can set the fan speed to be based off the CPU temperature; I find that min 40C and max 70C will stop any major overheating. The 2012 Unibody MacBook was the best in the series and arguably the best MacBook Pro, for the reasons you mention: later models have soldered RAM, proprietary storage, glued in batteries, and Pentalobe screws on the bottom of the case.
I did end up running mac's fan control (you can see it in the top right corner while I tested games). It seemed to like running at the lowest fan speed until it hit well over 90*c. But the new paste and a faster fan speed brought it down below 80 🙂
Someone did throw out my MBP and when it was recovered by the police, it was remarkably undamaged! I wish Apple still made them and that’s its loss and incidentally, my gain.
I have one myself, mine's the i7 model which I've maxed to 16GB of RAM and installed a 1TB SSD. With those specs these are still a very usable machine, despite being 11 years old.
The good thing about Macbooks is that they are made from metal. That's why they are so durable and strong, even when dropped on the ground. The problem with most Microsoft Windows laptops is that around 99% of them have a plastic casing, which can easily break when dropped.
Watching this in the same exact model that I bought in 2012. Still use it daily and going strong. Replaced the battery and the SATA cable twice, upgradedt the RAM to 8GB (it used to be 16GB but one of my RAM slot is malfunctioning, so I only use 1 slot now), then also use SSD
The lower RAM slot issue seems to only happen with the i7 models. The 2.5GHz i5 models don’t seem to get suffer from the issue for some reason. No idea why.
The heartbreaking question is now: why would anyone throw a completely functional laptop into the bin? Is it simply because they were no longer new, or the best in the market? You've shown that just a little TLC was enough to give this guy a whole new life of usefulness.
The problem with macs in schools are the end of life/support times. In order to be compliant with certifications linked to school funding you have to stay within security update support. Apple security update support is relatively very short for the high costs of the investment hence these come somewhat of a risk for retaining security certifications in the long run. Also the iOS version lock downs to certain models means app store apps that require minimum OS versions are locked out from install. Very frustrating and such a shame/waste of such good hardware, especially for the old perfectly decent and upgradable intel-based Macs.
I got a top end 2015 MacBook air from school. The original ssd has one of the traces damaged, so it was unusable. So I replaced it with a 1tb ssd. And the battery would randomly shut down the computer even though it was at only 170 charge cycles. So I bought an extended battery for $60. Now I have a great condition MacBook air with 1tb of storage, and an extended battery for $200.
I got 8 MacBook Pros at my school, gave two to a friend still waiting for him to fix, one to a friend who begged for it saying he could fix it and failed (of course I had to fix it for him free of charge) and I fixed and sold 3 of 5, 3 2015 retina MacBook pros
I picked one of these up about 6 months ago from our local e-waste recycler for $40US. Spent around $80US on 16GB RAM and a 240GB SSD, and it's been my daily driver ever since. It can handle Catalina, but I prefer High Sierra, as that's what my 2009 27 inch iMac runs ($60US plus shipping on Goodwill's auction site).
There must be a bit of it going around in Adelaide at the moment. I fished a late 2011 MBP out of an e-waste bin about a month ago, and I'm watching this video on it right now. SSD + OpenCore Legacy Patcher + Monterey = *chef's kiss*

I found a Apple g4 iBook mid 2004 in the trash but the fan and hard drive don’t sound happy I need to take it apart and see what’s wrong with it also the screen doesn’t light up so I need to fix that as well
Last month I bought the same MacBook model to a friend. Just replaced the HD and put and SSD and got able install Monterey thanks to Open Core Legacy Patch and its working pretty well.
My school was taking apart pcs and marking a few working ones and one of my friends was allowed to take the 256 GB hard drive but I think it’s broken cuz it was dropped.
I've still got a mid 2012 macbook pro, love it to bits. It helps me run both sound and lights for small theatre shows that there isn't any point bringing in a dedicated lighting desk for. But, it has been getting quite slow recently, maybe from the amount of software I need, or just age. Have been thinking of getting a M1 Pro, and using boot camp for windows, since some of the software I use is Windows only, and others are mac only.
My 2012 pre Retina 1278a 13 inch MBP still runs Catalina, is maxed out with 16 GB RAM, has a 1 TB SSD and is in mint condition! Right next to it is my 2015 HP ZBook 14 G2 mobile workstation every mm its equal! I don’t know why people throw out perfectly good stuff snd none of the modern MBPs is as rugged or as well built.
Can't believe someone threw this out! I also have a 13 inch mid-2012 MBP. My dream is to find a 15 inch one and upgrade the heck out of it, but they're quite pricey.

Maaaaaate - this is spooky, I am literally fixing up the exact same MacBook right as you uploaded. I'm struggling to re-install macos though because I think internet recovery doesn't work anymore? Any info on how to get a Catalina usb? Getting the macos .dmg files (not the .pkg) is slao proving bloody difficult.
Got another computer? if so gibMacOs on github - pulls down the nessecary internet recovery files if done on a windows machine, or the whole installer if done on a mac.
Lmao I just fixed up the same MacBook Pro as well. Just waiting on a trackpad delivery tomorrow and it will be complete. Internet Recovery is still fully functional on these MacBooks. You sure you have the right keyboard combination? If you are still running into issues, you can create a bootable USB with the OS of your choice up to Catalina, or do what I did and patch the machine with OpenCore Legacy Patcher to Monterey. Waiting for the Ventura patches to be stable before I make the jump.
clone the OS onto the SSD while externally plugged in . when you upgrade/changeover it internally you are good to go . Any way heap of tutorials on these . Research before knee jerking jumping into it
Recently updated my 2012 Macbook Pro to Venture with Opencore as well, since I stopped receiving Office updates on the previous OS. These old laptops are still very usable for productivity and web browsing.
The open core patcher is an amazing initiative. Reuse of perfectly decent hardware. Apple and others should be heavily contributing and supporting such initiatives after they end support for the hardware they have sold (released into the world) if they have any environmental interests at all.
Operating systems and web browsers kill old computers. In order to use the Internet, up to date browsers are required to be compatible with the web sites, New web browsers require fairly recent operating systems. New operating systems require fairly recent hardware. You see how Apple, Microsoft and OEMs get you to constantly upgrade your computer?

The line of thermal paste....
i have this same model macbook pro 16gb ram 2 ssds 1 with ventura on it and the other with catalina
@@dash8brj I'm just checking this out but see if this works...

Psivewri is to eucalyptus oil what Uncle Roger is to MSG.
Works on anything and everything.
Operating systems and web browsers kill old computers.
In order to use the Internet, up to date browsers are required to be compatible with the web sites,
New web browsers require fairly recent operating systems.
New operating systems require fairly recent hardware.
You see how Apple, Microsoft and OEMs get you to constantly upgrade your computer?
This thing is in surprisingly decent shape for its age. I wonder if it'd been cleaned before, there was practically no dust inside!
I'm guessing it didn't see use outside of clean classrooms. Plus it had only used 100ish battery cycles.
