I have been watching your videos for years! Decided to watch this again and as a result will be converting my old x100s into my new “Noir”. You have an uncanny ability to continue to interject humor, education and just plain fun into everyday photography. Keep bringing it on!!
Had to pause the video for a moment to catch my breath after laughing during the intro. Man. You are a marvel. You lift my spirits in every single video.
I was thinking of commenting on the intro but saw how you had already described my response very well so it made more sense to like your comment than writing my own :-D
Honestly Omar is a genius, laugh-out-loud funny as well as being extremely informative. Hands-down my favourite You-Tuber.
Julian Prior so nice. 🥰
Dude! When you pulled your camera out of your blazer pocket and said “noir” you had me rolling. You’re a funny dude. I enjoy your videos.
Couple of modification ideas: 1 - set a Fn button to go RAW for one “epic” shot. Camera will revert to jpeg after the shot. 2 - if you’re really reluctant to commit to nu-waaar only, use film simulation bracketing. I did this a lot on a trip to Greece, with astia, velvia, and Acros+R for my settings.
Great advice!
I've been exploring your option #2 with a used X-Pro 1 that I bought this year. I can't say that I've got any epic shots from this experiment but it's been fun.
Yeah, I was just thinking you could do simulation bracketing, either to capture a color version, or even just to try out different B&W simulations to see which you prefer.
If you go jpg & RAW, you are allowed to pick one RAW every 36 frames.
Big fan of simulation bracketing but would love for Fuji to update firmware to allow for using 3 custom recipe settings for bracketing and also not save three raws when bending the noir rules by shooting jpeg/raw
“It’s not a camera you can buy, it’s an experience you can create.”
Totally a one liner out of a noir film.
Cool idea! I’ve been doing something similar: B&W, square format, use LCD to shoot from waist, 23mm. It brings me back to when I used medium format 6x6 with 80mm lens. And the images look soooo classic!
This is what photography is all about. Experimentation. Fun. Creativity. Putting on the constraints, which opens the gateways to out of box thinking.
You are 1 of my top 3 UA-camrs. Keep doing what you are doing (gear & technique content) presented in your charming & humorous way.
Hey Omar, such a great video, thank you very much! I know that you need to make product reviews now and then to play for the numbers but your creative/insipirational videos are the most valuable for the community. This website you talked about, that has these film recipes is just priceless. I'm glad I was informed, thanks to you. It will be so nice to watch you talking about projects, going through the process with your inspirational guidance. Thanks again.
thanks so much
Fell off my chair when I saw the most epic photo ever created! Great stuff, Omar.
I'm going to make a B&W UA-cam video this weekend with my 95 year old dad. I have been making one per week in different Fuji colors with him and we talk about random stuff in front of his Crepe Myrtle tree and our family loves them. We are on number 14 this summer. This one will be in B&W. Thanks Omar. This was an entertaining piece of art....
Thank you so much for the shout-out! I’m so honored! I love the video-great humor, and great ideas!
Omar, you rock! Loved the idea. X-T3 is set aside and I went back to my old X-M1 where it all began. Added the 27mm pancake and I have to say the focus on composition and shadows...... I love it! Thank you
Great video Omar! i have an XPRO1 & 27mm which i haven't used in over a year, this will be my new Noir setup :)
Just being able to wear black and white the pull the camera and whisper "Noir" is already worth it
What a great idea! After some years away, I'm rediscovering my photography hobby...and I didn't even know there were "Film Recipes". ..ordered a used Fuji with Acros settings...since it seems multiple great B&W film recipes are built on the Acros option. :)
Just like always finishing my motorcycle rides in a better mood than when I started the ride, I'm always in a better mood after watching this guy and I learn as well about my Fuji camera and lenses.
Omar, if you ever doubt your abilities as an influencer, I watched your video and literally just repurposed my old X-T2 to be an a Fuji Noir! I chose the relatively new Voigtlander 27mm f2.0 manual pancake lens, and it's a great combo. My X-T5 is now jealous.
Omar, love your videos - always make me smile with your humor.
That intro was the best thing I've seen in years. It literally snapped me out of a depressed mood and got me up and out talking photos. Thank you. ☺ Got me thinking about Charlie Chan and Sherlock Holmes movies. LOL ☺
Great video again Omar. Thanks for the inspiration. We need it.
Omar: You had exceptionally great energy and charisma in this video. The switching between color and monochrome was a nice touch as well. I love your work. Thank you.
Noir is not something you can buy... it's something in your heart ❤️
Omar it is joy to watch your videos, they are entertaining and informative, but today you encouraged me to add a ‘noir’ to my schedule.
Hi, congratulations to this excellent video. On Sunday I have an BW workshop. So I've setup 7 B&W receipes in my X-T5. And I will print from those files (Heif (the new JPG)) without any adjustment except sharpening for the print.
Just when I thought there was nothing good on UA-cam anymore...you drag me back in. Indeed one of the few good things of 2020.
Working with digital and analogue cameras, I loved this tutorial. It is creative, fun and it really is way more entertaining than most camera clips on YT. Thanks.
Great fun... Gets you thinking out of the box... For me its going back to how i started Fleet Street deadlines and big blavk and white prints.
That’s a really fun idea, even restricting yourself to going at it every day door a week would have definite growth potential for your photography I imagine.
Great job Omar! Thanks for the idea!
it's totally fun. Focuses the mind on one goal.
I've gone so far down that Nior road that I've come back on myself holding an old 35mm film camera with Ilford HP5 in it. 🤷😆
There's actually some good HP5 presets out there for Lightroom. Whether it's true to the film I don't know, but I think it's a hidden gem that looks better than most other types of film emulation presets. That and Neopan are generally pretty good for most things. The HP5 for a basic contrast, and the Neopan for higher contrast. The problem I have with BW editing though is it's hard to go for consistency in looks, because different scenes might look better with more or less contrast and other adjustments. That is one of the benefits of film though, you get a single solitary style from each film that holds up pretty well, all without needing to bother editing.
Totally love this video Omar - so much fun - awesome! Please keep them coming!
Just bought a used xf27mm f2.8 to stick on my old xe2. This video has me fired up. I love black and white, and I love living with one lens and this setup should be perfect. Great video.
I love this whole concept... I have watched other videos by you, but this one really hit me. First disclaimer... I use Olympus gear... but I have three OMD E-m1 bodies. One of which is an older body with over 70k images. Dedicating that body to JPG and B&W is a REALLY intriguing idea and I am going to do just that! Just need to decide on which lens. Not sure I will be able to do all the settings like on your Fuji's but the concept is a great idea. Thanks for sharing!
I've done the same to my old X10. Using it is a different yet refreshing experience. Loved it when I'm on the go. When commuting to and from work, on the streets, etc.
Hey Omar two years later and this is a great video. Just got a Fuji X-E1 and I can’t wait to have some “Noir” fun with it. Love from South Africa 🇿🇦
Great idea. I have a used X-Pro 1 that I picked up this year that I use in bracket mode for a similar purpose. I need to learn more about recipes and try and turn the X-Pro 1 into a noir camera.
Great idea, you have just breathed life into my secondhand XE1 which was sat on the shelf with the 7Artisans 35mm manual lens. Good job. This now sits in my small Domke bag with my X100V and TT350 flash.
Your videos are some of the best on youtube. funny, Informative and creative, I love watching, you always cheer me up! THANKS from Liverpool
Your comedic style is so refreshing
You are the3 best Bro ---your creativity is off the charts!! No wonder you are3 such a great photog!!!
Another great video Omar. Love the Noir! I've been shooting jpeg only on my XE2 for the last few months using film simulation recipes. Have an Acros and an Ilford HP5 recipe ( as well as colour film stocks). But when I go out to shoot for the day I decide which 'film' to use for that day only. So some days are Acros only, and some are Agfa or Kodak colour days only. Loving the jpeg-only workflow!
You took a simple idea like shooting black and white and gave a whole new meeting to it. Very cool project, getting ready to try it all in, no cheats (maybe). Thanks!
I have been upset about the rain in winter Vancouver and I was about to stop taking photos and wait for the next summer, but the beginning of this video inspired me to still go out and take black and white photos!!! thank you!!!
i use Fujifilm XT4 BTW
Superb intro and very well made too. Well done Sir. I got an old Canon 50d laying around with a 50mm 1.8. Will be finding some gaffer tape and making a Canonoir.
I've been using my "old" XE1 in that exact same way. My (really old) Nikon 50mm/1.4 AI is more or less glued on it with a Zhonggyi Lens Turbo II. So that lens is basically a 50/0.95 now!
All 7 presets are B/W. I pimped it with a nice leather half case and braided neck strap for that extra retro feel. Love it!
Hi Omar. Thank you for the challange. Tried NOIR last Saturday in the streets of Lisbon. It was amazing. X-T3+10-24 (not a small lens, i know), Acros.
You made me smile. Thank you for your creative videos!
Great idea and advices, amazing photographer! Thanks
Those BW shots are spectacularly beautiful
Brilliant Omar - your best yet. I shoot with an X-T2 and 23mm fujifilm lens. Raw & JPG and the latter set to Acros Red filter. Excellent results. Thanks for this.
Lovely fun video Omar. Really enjoyed it. Thanks. I use my X-Pro2 and X-T3 all the time but rarely use my X-T2. I have now set it up as my Noir camera.
Love the idea of repurposing old cameras like this, Omar! Y’all don’t forget that film cameras exist! For me, I have an old Olympus OM-1 from 1972 that I shoot black and white film on. Completely manual but simplified: aperture, shutter speed, focus, shoot. If you like a cleaner look, I’d recommend getting a medium format film camera; even the film is cheap.
Thanks for the great fun idea and for thinking outside of the box
Omar made my day! About to ditch the XE3 with 27mm, and now found a new way to enjoy it. Name mine "Noir OMA".
Seriously... Omar is one of the most entertaining and informative camera influencers around. Always find the videos interesting, funny, and I inevitably am smiling when they're done. Are you a Fuji ambassador? If not, they need to get you on board. Love the custom gaffer tape. Seriously epic. :)
Just stumbled across this one after watching another one of your videos. Going to try the B & W route , sounds like it could be fun , sa you say, that's what it's all about.
Best. Channel.Ever! I'm a new fuji owner and I've been watching so many of your videos now 😂 I love your passion for photography Omar. The fact that you're sending people out there to experiment with this project is just fantastic....
Fabulous! My X100F is now my noir camera - love it!
Great idea!!! Thanks for the inspiration.
I started doing this with my Xpro1 and 18 mm F2 it’s been a lot of fun
Mark Santostefano Mark, there’s already something kinda magical about the XPro-1 sensor, that is unlike the newer cameras..it has a very film-like quality to it. It would be a great camera to play around with this on...enjoy!
Great video.
When I do that "Noir" exercise (or with a color film simulation) I shoot fully manual using as a guide for exposure the respective ISO exposure table that used to come with the film box. And I don't review the pictures until I finish.
I forgot: I use a 50mm equivalent lens because that was the most common or popular lens back in the film "era". I may use a 35mm equivalent for a change.
The New Fujifilm "Noir" first introduced by Omar Gonzalez Photo Magazine says "Revolutionary..." You've inspired me. I am going to convert my not very used X-T20 as my "Noir" camera!
Great episode...you’re one of us ! Thanks for what you do....
Hysterical meets genius! Love your vids man! I’m doin this exercise
UA-cam Video Of The Year!! Brilliant! That being said, I have a Lumix LX-5 that’s my blancoynegro camara-and you’re right! Noir is sooooo fun.
Haha, I love your energy and your Fuji content! Looking forward to try it out!
Hey man. Im totally with u on this. My favorite set is fuji x100s
The silent “Noir” face made me laugh 😂.
I guess we had a similar idea! I’ve been doing this for months with my x-t20 and my only lens, the 35mm f2. The only difference is I’ve been shooting raw+jpeg. I mainly delete the Raws, but if someone wants it in color, I still have that ability to deliver it to them.
Love your videos. Always laughing and realizing what I need to purchase. Love my xt20 and the little red button.
Very good suggestion to put constraints. Using film, well if the photo was missed, the photo was missed ... impossible to recover it. This forces us to take our time and look before taking a photo. I do this with my x100t, only monochrome. Peace.
Me: I need to buy a second hand Fuji x-t20
Wife: what’s wrong with the one you’ve already got?
Me: it’s not NOIR enough
Wife: ??
Me: yeah, it’s this new thing, you need a dedicated camera for it
Wife: oh really? Who said?
Me: OMAR
Wife: oh well, that’s alright then, go ahead!
You naughty naughty boy
Love this idea. I just picked up a cheap used X-T10 and might make it my noir camera 🙂
Brilliant, love your presenting style and WHAT a great idea, am inspired again, cheers to you Omar
Liking black and white pictures, that pleases me. Thanks
This is such a good idea, for anyone no matter what camera system they use.
Thank you so much, Omar, for this wonderful, funny and entertaining video🤩😆✌️! I think I will try to turn my X100F into a X100noir this weekend😎👍!!!
I LOVE THIS.....GREAT GREAT job..now to get out there and shoot...thank you!!!
This is such a brilliant idea. Thank you Omar
LOVE the idea. thank you for the effort and the sharing. your vids are always informative AND entertaining. i am an appreciative subscriber. stay well. thumbs up.
Enjoy watching your videos and your humorous persona. Regards from Croatia!
Omar, love the content, love your presence. Also: Thank you for the Princess Bride reference
I have my X100V (black natch!) set to raw and noir! Recently started using Fuji’s X-Raw Studio and it’s great for creating and tweaking recipes! Great video … thanks! 📷😀
I think this is a great idea. Haven't used my x100T for a while. It now has a new life.
Great advice and what a fun exercise! Intro was HILARIOUS - like a men's cologne commercial! I posted this on another UA-camr a few minutes ago: "I start in color with my eye and try to think in color first. B+W with a RAW is how I shoot now so I always have the color copy. I use the B+W mainly to see the contrast and the shapes initially. If the image initially looks good in B+W with good contrast, shapes, symmetry, and interest then the colors will almost always follow. It's kind of a quality check of the image and many of them look better in color. I would say I keep 70% of the good ones as B+W and maybe 30% stay as color?" (X-M1 travel camera, X-E2 at home)
I think this is why Fujifilm cameras are so versatile and giving you that vintage photography vibe today. This kind of experience is why I love taking photos with a fuji camera. I really like this idea esp with the 27mm. Wait do we just shoot full manual or it doesn't matter?
My X-E3 and my Helios 44-2 are often in BW and I always shoot i jpeg...... so I love this. It realy change the way you take pictures and how you see the world. Thanks, cheers.
I went full noir some years ago by using my dad’s Canon AE1 Program + 50mmf1.4 (now mine!)
Really makes you grow when you force yourself to shoot bw only :)
Wow this came at the right moment. I bought a XT3 last week and I wondered what I should do with my XT1. Now I know!
Great idea to push yourself out of the comfort-zone.
Love the Idea of the bracketing modes as well !
I'm a micro 4/3 Olympus/Panasonic shooter (don't own any Fuji stuff, although I love the direction they've headed in recent years), but after that intro I think I have to subscribe
You're soooo funny man no dull moment with your videos, very informative too keep it up!!!
Yes. I did the "same thing" with an old Canon XTi a number of years ago when I upgraded to a higher resolution Canon for the color stuff. I set up that aged 10.1MP XTi for monochrome "only". The lens is the original kit lens, 18-55mm, f:3.5-5.6. It isn't nearly as good as a sensor-dedicated fancy modern monochrome-only Leica, obviously, but it is convenient for those days I feel like going out for those nostalgia-looking photos of yester-year.
Sooooo...I'm sure this topic comes up all the time. I see online discussions about whether Fuji could/ would/ should create a monochrome-only camera...as a sort of direct competitor to Leica's. But, do folks know what FUJI has said about this idea? Fuji is likely asked all the time, so wondering if folks have heard.
Awesome 😎. Love the idea! You just mitigated my latest pandemic-GAS I was going through. On my way out to shoot with my new Noir camera!
What a cool concept! Love it! And a fab video as always. Your homour is getting stronger and stronger. Just awesome! Thanks for making us laugh while sharing in your passion for Fujifilm!
I have a X-Pro2 with sensor issues not really noticeable with B&W jpegs. Might just make it into a dedicated B&W jpeg shooter with my Leica lenses.
Very creative intro! Excellent idea... I no longer have my Fuji but I am going to try this with my main camera.
Great video! This is I think the whole essence of shooting with Fugifilm. All my Fujifilm cameras are set up with 5 B&W film sims and 2 Color. But I always shoot Raw/Jpeg just so I can mess around a bit more if the mood strikes. Wish I had found this video 2 yrs ago. Thx and keep up the great yet fun content coming :)
Omar, I've been following you since a while. You are SO cool ! Now, this Fujifilm NOIR stuff is just a great idea. I will turn my X70 to X-Noir !!!
