Through a nice set of PC speakers, I didn't hear the bad part of the reverb on my end even cranked up. Great Marshall tone! Good playing as per usual!

The most glorious Marshall ever made imho. Had mine for a year and haven't even plugged into my other Marshalls lol

John, speaking as a former engineer in a big old school recording studio, mic placement on a cab is much like where you pick along the length of the string: it’s not so much a “do this not that” situation as it is one of flexibility. Put it wherever it sounds how you like 👍

By far the best review on this DSL1 on UA-cam. Thank You Sir!

Reverb is between pre- and poweramp sections of the amp. When you crank classic gain, power amp start to distort as well, which is by its nature is strong compression of the signal, so reverb gets compressed as well. It is totally normal, it is not fault of any kind! It is still better than running reverb in front of the amp. The only way to get over it is to apply reverb later in recording. This is valid for other amps with reverb as well.

It sounds great, even with reverb and full-on volume!

What a nice video, you have really developed your skills as a presenter John, this video gives us exactly what most 'mature' guitar players would want from such an amp-I used to own a 5 watt Bugera little amp and that was kind of similar to this Marshall in sound. Cheers

I bought the head version a week ago and have it going through a Celestion 1x12 and my god it's good. Stick a treble booster in front and the tone is probably one of the best I've heard. My pro days, I had a DSL 2000 100w stack and it's that sound at 1w.

I think the reverb on that amp sounds great.

It's a practice amp, adjust the reverb as needed or get a reverb pedal. Sounded fine to me anyway, grain silo!

NIce review! I have the 40W version, and it’s a great amp. Reverb not usable on mine either. For pedal reviews, I have noticed there is a large difference in how pedals sound based upon which amp you are playing them through. Biggest difference is between the Marshall and a Fender. If you ever get the valve amp itch again, I would highly recommend a Fender Princeton for lower volume applications.

I bought the 5watt version and loved it .I thought it was a bit boxy so I bought another one both sides of my guitar room it’s cracking ..love them 👍👍

why not just buy external 1x12 cabinet with some greenback? Small cabinets, especially closed back, always sound boxy, nothing to do with that.

I love the Marshall 1 watt amps. I went to a PRS clinic that Bernie Marsden was doing several years back and he played the whole night through a miked up Marshall 1 watt re-issue of a JTM and he sounded fantastic, as does this one of yours.

One of those cheap 3 button chorus/delay/reverb pedals in the effects loop is probably all you need. I got one online for about $65 and it works just fine. I was surprised at the quality and sound for such a moderately priced product. It's not boutique but it gets the job done.

I don’t know if it’s because UA-cam have compressed the hell out of this sound or if it’s my device? But, honestly, the reverb didn’t sound like a deal breaker. It maybe a little disappointing but there’s no such thing as the ‘perfect amp,’ especially in the home practice genre. I’ve been looking at a Blackstar HT1R but they always come across as muddy on the demo vids. The Marshall may just be what I’ve been looking for. Thanks for the demo!! Liked & subscribed 👍

I think my DSL1 combo is great. I've had it for years. I record mine using Two Notes Torpedo so it saves using a mic. Don't like the sound of the speaker anyway. Sounds better through the 2x10 is use for my bass amp.
I usually use the clean channel, but have reverb dialed down, preferring to add it in DAW.

I bought a Vox pathfinder as something small and unobtrusive to stick in the bedroom for my bad days. No reverb so I bought a Donner reverb pedal off amazon for 40 quid. Can't remember the exact model and I've lent it to a mate for a few weeks. It's the green one with a modulation reverb setting. Great little pedal and the modulation is handy for a chorus like effect. Give it a try and you can always return it if you dont like it.

Thanks for the mic'ing up advice John, how close is the mic to the cab? Great result from the affordable mic. The mic'ing up cork-sniffers always seem to recommend mics costing hundreds!

Kinda wish this was more in my price range. Have a 5w Monoprice Stage Right- the Harley Benton equivalent- and it is a job to get the tone you want at an apartment volume. With no headphone option, the 1w attenuator doesn't tame the beast!

    • @robotx4242

I use a pedal with a volume knob. I have some old Boss multi-fx pedals that work great for reducing volume.

If you like the amp then a power soak is a good option, it has to be the correct ohm rating though.

Marshall JCM 800 is my favourite amp, altho my opinion is based on the amp model of it in the NUX MG300 I use. I do like to combine it with with several boost/overdrive pedals, which just brings out more harmonic richness. Looks like a lovely little amp that one. But I have my heart set on the Orange Micro Dark as a valve mini amp to get someday, I'm just more curious for that one over the affordable Marshall offerings. Nice 1 John!

Good sounds....and great playing! I don't think that I've played an amp with a basic built-in digital reverb was ever a "winner". I've gone to a reverb pedal in those cases. Now a good built-in Tube Driven Spring Reverb...that's a whole different Ball Game. 😃

I've got the DSL20HR that I run through a 4x12. Great for venues but have to use am attenuator at home. I seem to bounce between the amp reverb and a pedal reverb depending what mood I'm in. - and I don't mind sounding like I'm playing at Live Aid rather than the local church choir.

  • @sid35gb

I have a dsl 1 head running through a Marshall 2x12 angled cab. I wouldn’t choose the combo version because the speaker limits what the amp is capable of. As for reverb I’ve had no problems.

Sounds great . Am looking at the dsl 40 as back into gigging now but my do like the origin 50 as well. Just has that more vintage sound. It gets some way to that plexi sound and being one channel makes life easy. Just stick my pedal board with it. Which one would you go for?

  • @jimmyjames2022

"...suddenly you're in a grain silo!" Funny! Grain silo acoustics seem to be popular for recording sessions, maybe Marshall was designing for those artists. As for foot switches, my old Bandit came with the foot switch included, while few manufacturers nowadays include their proprietary foot switches, which hobbles the amp significantly. People just accept that and will either skip the switch cause its too pricey or pay the extra "tax" just to get the amp working properly. It's turned me off buying a lot of amps. The one exception I made recently for a Vox amp, the proprietary foot switch isn't even available at all in my country, so not only will I have to pay for import duty but also higher shipping. I'm going to sell it and stick with the plugins.

The reverb is not good for me, but got a host of pedals that fil the gap.
The amp sounds great, really great, and volume for me isn't a problem, no neighbours and a very understanding Wife!!!

Very Cool Demo/Review Thankyou. So No Headphones or emulated out Jack? Is that a 'bad thing' I don't know, but maybe an essential inclusion for me with close neighbors. I am finding all the low Watt Tube amps seem to have no Headphones/Emulated out. A little disappointing but must just be me otherwise they would have them.

This DSL1 is the Holy Grail The reverb is fine you obviously don't dig reverb, I love mine no cons, leaves the class 5 for dead ! The best amp you can own in a limited space !! Oh I forgot to mention .1 watt power reduction Great, want areally good demo of this Amp check out ( Jason Likes Things )

I seem to remember you say that the DS1 had an effects loop, could you not put a decent reverb pedal in the loop to get round the increase in verb when turning your guitars volume up, or would it still sound the same, gotta be worth a try, yes?

Having this amp also, but on the green channel as I roll the treble all the way down, the volume increases, sounds like a gain boost knob when rolling off. On the red channel the treble knob behaves just normal as it is expected. Do you experience this also?

Why do they make amps with gain channels?
I don't want any gain at all, a clean only channel is all i need.
This is why i never buy Marshall amps or a lot of other brands.
My Roland JC22 gives me the cleanest sound that i can find for a solidstate amp.
For my "Valve" sound i use a Vox AC30 played at a low volume to keep my neighbours happy.
