Sooo many little plastic pieces that break. Note to future self, order them before tearing the door apart just in case.

Excellent video for showing how it all comes apart and goes back together. A little advice (as locksmith for almost 40 years) is to not use oil as a keyway lubricant as later it can gum things up. Tri-Flow or LPS-1 spray both are great for cleaning and lubing keyways. Keep moving the key in and out and wiping it off. You might get lucky and not have to take anything apart. Great job!!!

I'm flattered a lock smith approves. Thanks for the tip on not using oil as a lube. I use lock lube for the key in and out trick and it usually gets it. I had a couple of bent springs that was probably my fault for not cleaning it sooner and forcing it.

I just wanted to say thank you for the tip about trying Tri-Flow. I had some on hand and gave it a try....after just a few times it actually worked!!!
Saved me having to do all this work. Thanks!!!

Thank you for your video, I had to remove all secrets, sand it down to remove the corrosion (metal cylinder with brass secrets, is a good choice if you plan to sacrifice the brass and keep the cylinder, but not good with galvanic corrosion - if water, grime and salt is introduced in the winter). There was a lot of old grease and sand in the mechanism, I used brake cleanser and a soft wire brush from the dollar store. Those springs are really small, easy to loose, I used a piece of cat 6 strand I had laying around to remove it and put it back and I used a table with white cloth, took the pieces in sequence and lay it down in order. I used a piece of emery cloth and a small piece of 2x4 to clean the secrets. To put it back I rolled a piece of masking tape as I inserted the springs and the secrets. On the half secret ones, i held the cylinder almost vertical, point it up and inserted the halves equally then rolled the tape over to secure. I oiled all with 30 oil. That spring at the end was hard but I made 2 mistakes, the secret holder was not inserted all the way inside the cylinder and the cap was not fully seated, I compressed the cap in a vise and used a small screwdriver to lock into space (it has 2 notches on the sides and you need to bent back).
I put the clip that hold the cylinder , clean up the plastic receiver in the door and lube with oil, pushed the cylinder in till click. It works now. Thank you for your help.

Great job. Thanks for sharing. It sounds like your tumbler was a lot worse off than mine. The emery cloth and masking tape is a great idea, I wish I thought of that. I was lucky to, my end cap seated pretty easy and spring was not to bad.

Having a very similar problem on my ‘00 4Runner, the key works randomly on both front doors, it won’t turn all the way, so the locks only open half way. Ok, so the idea is to somewhat take the tumbler apart, clean it and re-oil it and put everything back together. Is oil enough for the tumbler or it should also be greased? Will definitely give this a shot. Really appreciate the video!

Hi Mike, Thanks for the +. Check the key isn't worn out, tumbler just needs to be lubricated, the door linkage, and stuck or sticking door lock motor. ua-cam.com/video/w9I07zorkXw/v-deo.html this video before taking it all apart. My driver door was just the tumbler. My other doors were the lock actuator motors. I pulled them apart, cleaned them, regreased them. One is still a little sticky so I probably need to replace it or I didn't put it back together. This door was the tumbler 100%. Good luck, let me know how it turns out.

@@Squisheyy Now that you mention it, the key does pretty worn out and the fact that it is happening on both the driver snd passenger doors indicates it could very much be the key. It was working just fine months ago, and has progressively gotten worse. It’s the only key I have for the car. Do you know by any chance how to order one from Toyota, is that done by the vin number? Thanks for the reply.

@@Mike_44 I'd call around and check to see if the dealer has it, what they need to cut it, and the price. The dealer I went to checked my registration against my drivers license. It cost me $25 and saved me some time, hassle, and a few bucks. After going through all the ropes, my last resort was the tumbler. At least it was cheaper than replacing a key fob. Those are hundreds.

🤔 I'm debating if I should clean mine or just order some from eBay for 15 bucks. But those cheaper ones don't come with the trunk lock

    • @Squisheyy

That’s a tricky one. If you have time, cleaning is better. I found the eBay ones can cause problems and might use different keys.

@@Squisheyy so all the actuators actually work now, I can lock all the doors and unlock them with the button inside. But now it’s just my driver key hole that won’t unlock the doors. When I turn it left it locks the doors but gets caught up when turning right to unlock. I sprayed it and let it set and it did nothing. But if I force it, I can get the lock halfway open and open the door,
