+ellaskins, I learned the pitch riding on the turntables years ago by watching your vids. Before then I've always been the guy spinning the needle. No more. Got it down after years of practice all thanks to your introduction. Peace and respect sir!

Great vid but I believe the correct way to count bars is to substitute the 1 with the number of bars and then continue as normal with 2, 3, 4. Eg: 1,2,3,4 2,2,3,4 3,2,3,4 4,2,3,4 etc. Counting 3 on beat 4 will only lead to confusion. This eliminates that.

yeah i thought the same. i thought i always count 8 bars . so lets say i start with 1,2,3,4 all the way to 8,2,3,4. i would only press play after i complete 8,2,3,4. otherwise i would technically be playing 1 bar too soon.

      As a similar comment.
Time-signature means something quite different from how it is used in this video.
The time signature is how the bars of a song are divided in beats, this might be 4/4 (1,2,3,4) or 3/4 (1,2,3) or 12/8 etc.
Why the nitpicking? well this is a music teaching video isn't it?
Otherwise great work Ellaskins, I find you DJ lessons quite helpful.

Not wanting to 'nit pick' but Its not a 'incorrect time signature' as stated ... cos the time signature is 4/4 as per most dance music. I think what you meant to say was 'dropping in on the wrong beat'. And also, it should be counted as 1234, 2234, 3234, 4234 as the main beats are on the two and four - hence the saying 'playing the 1's and 2's'. Otherwise technically you are counting on the wrong beat. Its bad because else you teach your brain to recognise the wrong beat etc. Hope you don't mind me saying. Apart from that, you've made another great video !! Keep em up ! :)

does this mean you should listen to the next song that you are about to bring in to figure out the start of the next phrase. And should you do this all while the previous song is playing out the speakers?

    hi John
I know this question I'm now gonna ask u is irrelevant to this video
I have had a big load of drum n bass vinyl which I'd love to know the bmp for future mixing
is there a quicker way of doing it than the video u uploaded few years back showing listening to the first 30 secs and count the beats and then double it
as I have over 400 drum n bass vinyl and doing that will take me a year or 2 lol

Is the 5th bar rule applicable to any track? Or can it vary between different tracks?

I just realised that I've been doing this without realising... I've never tried to bring the other track in at the start of the fourth or eight bar

Will this work for any genre or just tracks with vocal? Reason I ask is because I mainly play techno and tech house.

Couldn't tell if you were joking or not man. When you wait four bars you wait for the fourth bar to end... you don't come in on it. So its confusing to say you wait until the 5th. You are just waiting for the full 4th bar to finish!
