i don’t mind at all if you start the video promoting yourself, you’re the one who’s nice enough to show us all this info for free the least people can do is show you some respect in that regard
When i am mixing in the second track 99% best way for me is the mids and highs at 10 o clock moving the volume fader to max. When a small break comes, mix the bass from first track to the second one. You will keep the Melody going and bass 👍
You said so little, but explained so much, and you literally did 3 mins of talking and than demonstration on everything you said. Simply perfect tutorial !
yo Ive been learning for a month, ive watched sooooo many videos about transitioning and it just never seemed to be a buttery smooth transition, they seemed too fast. this video taking it slowly to transition is it! thanks for the clear and slow instructions so easy to follow!
please keep these mixing tutorials coming. The ones that are up on youtube are too niche or too vague imo. This one is way more straight forward and informative.
@Blank Facee also if u dunno how to Beautmatch or bring in a. Transition I learned it personally counting the beats until 8 count to 8 4 times and after the first time counting 4 times press play after that keep counting and finally bring ur transition in but if ur on controller it’s easier in my opinion
Hey Arman, just wanted to tell you that i really appreciate both the content and the way you are visualising/providing all of the informaion. I learned a lot initially from dj ellaskins, which is great in terms of mind visualisation for begginer djs, to grasp the context and why's. He's always taking years in getting to the point tho, using multiple examples and comparisons. Entertaining, but for one that is trying to visualise an image it's like describing a singular line of shape, without mentioning the perspective. You provide precise and crucial information that fills the gap i have from his tutorials tho, with logcal precise descriptions which make me understand things thoroughly, possibly cause of having very analytical mind. Your video on 5 dj habbits that I've watched years ago, gave me soooooooo much support, information and confidence later on that i cannot highlight enough. What I'm trying to say is that you have opened my eyes multiple times with your tutorials! You are creating a great content for the community and you seem like a really humble person. Biggest ups mate!
Thanks so much for the kind words and for taking the time to write such a detailed message. Having viewers that appreciate the lessons and the work that goes into the videos, who are actually learning from them make it all worth it!
Arman, this might be one of the simpler (but at the same time best) DJing videos on UA-cam. Great explanation and demonstration, keep up with the good work!
When you slapped the volume fader all the way to the top without bass and mid, that high hat was perfectly fine. in fact that was pretty good tho, because the mix didn't lose intensity. Nicely done
Nice to see someone else likes to throw the up faders open and balance things out with the Eqs. Ive been doing it this way as long as I can remember because it just felt natural and sounded better in my opinion. There are some scenarios where a slow up fade is preferable but I use this method across most genres and rarely see other DJs do this.
Same...let the phrase changes in the tune guide you on where to make more solid, distinct changes...all these micro/pedantic tiny adjustments is such overkill
Most guys have never used a knob ISO mixer. Like a Rane, Urie or Bozak mixer to name a few. With those you have the option to say lower reduce the bass of the lead song playing to slowly build up the intro to the second song. Sometimes using the acapella over the new bass line for the new song transitioning in. Just one basic example. Most of us use the crossfader mixer. Try what is called Hamster mixing. Leaving the crossfader centered and using the line volume vertical slides to mix with. Most crossfader models will allow you to play with the EQ knobs to blend fade manipulate your transition. If not. You had to find a song with the same type of bass line to work the mix. Its just one of many ways to work the song mix. I've been spinning Mobile, club,Bars etc since I got hooked in 1978 at the age of 16. I've been fortunate to be allowed to observe, listen, learn and use club equipment with the guidance of some of Ny's and NJ then notable Dj''s. I've since became a full time family man. Now that I'm retired it's become one of my relaxing hobbies. I still enjoy the pleasure it gives me.After all these years I can't shake the pleasure and rush I still get from spinning. Plus it brings back all the good memories of real funny parting. When people came sharply dressed in style, had manners and respect for eachother. Thanks for the video. keep sharing. Peace!
I see you nudge the the incoming track forward and continue to do so even when its almost all open and you bringing the outgoing track down, the problem with that is that you can sometimes hear how you bend the pitch of the incoming track especially when all the frequency faders are all open...you should actually be nudging the deck outgoing deck back...or what Im actually trying to say is its better mixing by nudging back and forth the deck that has the least volume.
Bernard Steyn yup. Much more noticeable on vinyl mixing aswell. Can get away with it on cdjs but def on vinyl you need to be slowing or speeding up the outgoing track whdn its volume is lower and being mixed out
@@emberdrops3892 cause it's slightly out of sync and he hasn't moved the pitch a tiny bit to fix it,also he cuing both tracks in headphones at same time to beat match.
I've been off the stage for a while and I had lost my touch. my flow on the eq was too acute. Now I see what is out of line. Good, solid , basic to the point video. Much appreciated.
Been doing this when I mix soulful and deep house.. didn’t know it was EQ mixing, it just felt natural. This vid helped me fix my technique a little though
Finally, some equalizer tut with good music... this was a smooth transitions... he put's them all at 12oclock, but sometimes this does give no depth to the sound in the speakers? Should we control that somewhere else?
Thank you so much! Very easy to follow. I've only been at it for a few months now and recently learned about EQ mixing. My first larger gig is tomorrow, so it will definitely come in handy!
Love your tutorials. I've been DJing since the 90's but i'm always open to learning. I use EQ mixing as play Trance/Hard House here in the UK but also play Progressive Breakbeat so EQ mixing is perfect for this genre as tend to play long transitions. I think a lot of new dj's need to realise they are not just djing but sound engineering at a basic level when in the booth :)
Hey mate also in the UK here can't get my head around how to mix breakbeat and some of the rave tunes of the 90's like 'Feel Real Good' or Isotonik etc I just can't get it to sound clean. Have you any tips I play on 2 pioneer cdj800's and a Stanton Turntable
Thanks for this video, I learned a lot from it! I just started DJing and I never touched the middle EQ knob before I watched your video. Now I'm doing it the way you showed in this video and my mixes sound way better. I blew my girlfriend away! If I may suggest a topic for a new video, I've been wondering why I would ever want to use 4 decks instead of 2. I never use the other 2 channels that I have available to me, so it would be interesting if you showed me some tricks that work with 4 decks that you can't do with only 2.
Hi, thanks for all your instructional vids, they are a most welcome informative insight for us newbies, My question is how many bars would you normally use for a transition?
Don't use the channel volume use your gains to adjust your track volumes it will make for smoother transitions and keeps your focus on the EQ knobs. Keep your channel faders on full blast and use the gain to adjust each track then the gain, crossfader, and EQs to mix This just gives you a simpler and in my opinion better workflow. Two less controls to operate frees up your hands to be more precise with your timing.
What style of music and what style you mix all depends on how you judge your EQ levels. This video is not the way but just one way of how to use your EQ levels with this type of music genre
I would have kept loop of track A going with only treble for about 16 beats maybe even the entire mix - but definitely until the next big drop of track B. Great example tho! Wish youtube and Dj's like you were around when I was djing using Gemini loop boxes that were 16 bit so there was a definite sound quality drop. Bu hey I'm old!
I am confused with the A B crossfader below. Did you disable this because it is set all the way at A the entire time you are mixing in B. Should this not be in the middle or can you disable?
The little side way switches under each fader are to "assign" the channel to the cross fader...A for left, B for right or "THRU" means the cross fader does nothing. A lot of house/deep style DJs practically never use the cross fader so assign it to THRU so it's turned off :)
My techniques in build ups hpf until 8000 Hz and breakdowns take the sub bass of incoming track 20 Hz frequency until 300 Hz These techniques give energy to the audience
Nice tutorial, will give this technique a try for sure. Just a bit of feed back and in no way am I trying to be negative in what I say. Get straight into the topic of the tutorial. The dates and events your are doing won't be relevant in a year's time, save this stuff until after you've shown the people your moves. Other than that good content mate
I'm guessing maybe this is also distributed as a podcast type thing, so perhaps like you say if the video clip is kept to just the topic of the tutorial and then an extra 'intro' or 'outro' bit is added to the distributed podcast for the current info? But yeah, good tutorial!
You have to be quick when mixing at a party! You’re not in studio to open the channels in this way. You can mix couple of tracks together as long as you want but your reactions must come out your body without thinking! Thats the way distinguishes djs from each other at the parties. Cheers
Sir, that video was so helpful. Very easy to understand. thank you. Question : where do you find your music? I'm starting out and really want to build my repertoire. Thanks again
Could you do a tutorial on Mixing in a more particular way, for the bassline? My Problem now is that I don’t quite get to manage the Transition of the Bassline very well. I know it‘s also a lot about timing which is probably my nemesis in Mixing. Just would like to see maybe a few ideas on how to work on the low EQ, or maybe some examples of basslines that are simply a no go to mix, of there are any? Still not sure if it is only my level that makes me fail in Mixing some tracks that would work out together very well for the key and Energy Level, but sound all muddy when trying to bring in the new bassline in the Transition. I really like your videos btw. You teach DJing in a nice way, modest and easy to understand. Keep on going, very inspiring. :)
Rose B this is covered in the video on mixing in key. Basically if the bass lines are in the same or a related key, it’s way easier to make the transition smooth.
i play mainly hip hop and dancehall reggae, how do i mix with the eq if ive only got 4bars to do it in,4 bars dont give you much time to adjust all those eq knobs... thanks for the video!
Above the crossfader is a button which deactivates it, so you can only use the volume-faders for smoother mixing or ensure during a gig there is no bass which eventually pushs it further
Must be said: this house genre of music is extremely easy to mix. Tracks are by nature hard to distinguish and blend in easliy. The real challenge is mixing 70s-80s disco.
@W0Y4K It's not a competition. But when someone says this is brilliant, it's relevant to state that house music is easy to mix (for more reasons than you just gave). No problem however to enjoy mixing house and listening to it.
Hi! Arman, I'm a beginner, great tutorial on how to utilize the Eq for beat matching. I'm learning something new everyday as a beginner dj, on the other hand, Did you ran a loop on the second track? Thanks for your time.
Like your videos man. I’m also (home) DJ from Toronto but I have fear of performing. What would you suggest in this situation? All my friends are techno nerds and criticizing my mixes all the time and I know it’s “good” but when I start playing with at least a bit of audience I’m making mistakes. But if I’m all alone like nobody watching I’m doing crazy good transitions that turn to be completely different tracks that sound insane!
This might be long winded but here goes (and I'm assuming you mix in key with the Camelot wheel). Plan your set, certainly say your first 30 mins. Keep it simple, by that I mean play tracks that work well together (in key) and do smooth transitions as Arman has shown in this video. If you do this for your first 2 or 3 tracks it will build confidence in you AND your crowd. Then I would probably say go for a bigger key change, such as playing a track in a major key or jumping two keys on the Camelot wheel to give you set/flow an energy boost. Once you've got the confidence you'll start enjoying it and the more complex mixing techniques you talk about will be much easier to execute in front of a crowd! Hope that helps, keep it up and be confident 👍🏻
Practice begets experience Experience begets finesse Finesse begets confidence Confidence be gettin’ you laid. Stop hanging out with music snob who talk down to you. Good friends would enable you.
How can two basses ever *mix* ? Even in small amounts that just seems very wrong. Only mid bass maybe but better to do that to the higher fs and just swap the low fs.
i'm mixing since 1996 when there wasn´t the internet yet, this is the first time i've found a short but realy usefull tutorial.

It’s funny that I watched the whole video and in the end you mention Barbados where I am and gonna have my first gig.

Awesome advice for a beginner DJ like myself, thank you :-D
How can two basses ever *mix* ? Even in small amounts that just seems very wrong. Only mid bass maybe but better to do that to the higher fs and just swap the low fs.
please make a tutorial about phrasing. do you preset your cuepoints in and out?
