Over 3 decades later and it's still the JAM!
TRUE WORD, DEAR BRUCE M !!!
Yes!!!agreed!
omg has it been that long?? That just slapped me hard. Damn,
True, I danced "Back to life" in New Year's Eve 1989
Werd.
I was living in Brixton, south London when this came out during the long, hot summer of 1989. I was 27 enjoying the best of my youth, and this tune will forever remind me of the sweltering sights, sounds and smells of a languid London summer in that amazing decade. Soul to Soul was oozing out of every open window, boom-box and blacked-out BMW. This song transports me back to a special time and I never tire of hearing it.
@Andrew Longtime Brixton, why that would be David Jones / David Bowie territory!
Yes !!! Takes me back to those hot days living in London... such a wonderful time
@@chrisf.7980 Only for a few years, though.
What is it about hot summers and hit music?
yeah, I was living in Stockwell Park Estate behind the Academy at that time. The sun shone every day!
young people will never understand how important music was in the late 80's & 90s. We danced our asses off...atleast until 2006 when music was still good. We are still dancing. The Acapella version of this is a must..." and when the beat drops" is the epitome of the acapella version
❤❤❤ dançava muito
30+ years later and it’s still impossible to hear this song without moving your body
One of the best if not the best Song of 1989. A time when we celebrated life and enjoyed it to the fullest. The lead singer was gorgeous and had a fantastic voice too.
That’s Caron Wheeler! 🙂
Soul II Souls Back to Life and Keep on Moving were 'The' tunes for our summer holiday in Kavos Corfu back in 89
Facts! It was the BEST song of 1989!
I'm a straight 45 year old woman & Caron makes me all "hot & bothered." That woman can MOVE.
The calm before the storm hey. Those were the days. 👀👀
Caron Wheeler has the most beautiful voice!!! I loved this song and it uplifted me so much during a rough time as a young teenager in the late 80s.
Caron Wheeler in "Keep On Moving" was a late teen-support system song so much needed for me, personally!
@@jasonkraley Yes that song was so inspirational. Such a great time in music with Soul II Soul's album in '89!
@@DzignrGrl agreed.. it was the beginning of an incredible new decade of so many vast styles and new artists making wildly new music!
You and me both was a lifeline had it on vinyl bought with Saturday job money along with industrial strength hairspray!
I hear that 👍🤣🙏
British legends!! Ridiculously talented bunch. Jazzy B is a genius. 30 years, still get goosebumps!!
This song has been on my playlists from cassettes to cd’s to mp3s and now it is on at least 2 Spotify playlists. It is a timeless song. It works in any decade.
Yes yes!! The acapella version is 🔥
MsMadAboutMusic YES YES YES I totally agree I almost forgot about the acapella version....straight 🔥🔥🔥
Steady, are you ready? :-)
“Keep on Movin’” is another great song by them. It has more of a mellow vibe.
I actually prefer Keep on Movin to Back to Life 🙏🙏🙏👍
And dream a dream
The club remix with the violin solo!
I loved Fairplay and remember ordering it from London as it hadn't yet reached Manchester 😄
@@TheNeilo-Audiosound
Me too.
Keep on moving is my favorite Song of them
Try to imagine how this sounded in
1990! Think of the music then, and how this is STILL a banger. It REALLY stood out. I was 18. And these guys came from 2 miles down the road. They created that beat too. It's echoed down through loads of other tracks
@Calisparkz2 You mean we're both young and good looking??? 😄😄😄
Summer of 89 in the UK .
89 I was Sophmore in HS. This was the jam!
I was 18 too! It was all over....
@@MM22333 im back there.....
This was a mega hit here 🇬🇧.. that soulful voice of Caron Wheeler..true talent
Mega-hit pretty much worldwide.
@@jessieball6195 Yep! I remember about 1990 in Miami, and this was an anthem!!
I love this song, really sums up the London scene at the time, great music, great parties and beautiful people. So positive, Caron Wheeler is a Queen - that voice sends shivers, especially the acapella version ❤️
Init
That is the TUNE from my youth. They were BLACK and they were BRITISH and that song and that sound was MASSIVE at the time. Brings back some good UK club scene memories!
Same. Good fun :D
Great.. Thanks for pointing out their skin colour. That's all anyone seems to care about these days is fucking race.
@@manguy2000Oh I'm sorry Ken, did I hurt your feelings! Here is a tissue for those white tears. And say hello to Karen!
I think just about everyone bought this single back in the day. It’s still a class act. The best of British :)
@@krissmgvlogs 🤣🤣🤣 couldn't have said it any better..
I think everyone in the U.K. bought this single back in the day 😋
Yep, I did.......and still listen to the tune all these years later and try and convince myself that I am still a teenager 😂😂😂
@@michellegreggan4548 we are really, it’s just we pretend to adult to I’m;reds other people with all the crap we’ve learnt 😂 KEEP IN MOVING! :D
Yep it was a sensation. Hit number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was a massive hit all across Europe and the Far East. A generation defining song and had a massive influence on R n B into the 90s.
Pretty big in Canada as well. Loved Soul II Soul.
@@RogueWJL Even metal heads loved this song.
I love it when Americans discover that we actually had our own sound and music culture going on over here....
I love your energy Bredrin 💕🥰
Actually, despite being British., they blew up in America first, and later at home.
British is a copy of the original, black American soul.
@@williejameswilliams1 yes they did.
This was sooooo big in NYC back then, in the Hood !!!!
...in my opinion this group was the most fully realized aspect of the British soul music community...they had America under their spell...however when they did not win the Grammy for whatever category they were up for...i saw the devastation on their faces...they are basically dance music and that genre of music is extremely popular....but is not respected in the industry unless you are considered a serious artist 1st...then you deign to SLUM and do something that people can dance to...i remember GEORGE MICHAEL remaking this song...and of course he was brilliant....but not as good as CARON....she not only had an amazing effortless flow on top of all of that exquisite production....beautiful vocal range....she had an emotional projection that cannot be denied....i BELIEVED HER....every word she sang....
At the clubs back in the day, this was a serious jam - everybody would be on the floor.
Was discos back then lol I remember dancing to this ..... had some great times great songs not like now days music gone down hill
"Back to Life" was never about over the top vocals as it's meant to be smooth vibe beat song. One of my 80's favs. I still play the CD. ❤🎵✌
The KLF was an interesting group during this time period too. They were popular in Europe. They just recently started uploading their discography after a very long absence. 3 A.M. Eternal has a similar vibe to this.
Recently allowed their music to be available online... Remember seeing their car around Old Dagenham back in the day...
Great shout. KLF will rock you
3 AM Eternal gets my vote too. If @JayveeTV does upload a reaction to this song make sure it's the version that says 'Official Video' in brackets. Pic and sound quality is awesome ----> The KLF - 3AM Eternal (Live at the S.S.L.) (Official Video) ua-cam.com/video/HDsCeC6f0zc/v-deo.html
I love the Tammy Wynette vocal on Stand By The Jams. Who’d have though you could blend country legend with Uk electro 1990s. Superb.
Flying to Holland a few yrs ago with KLM Airways and all I could sing was... KLM is gonna fly you.. Beebop bopbee 😂
Some tunes just never disappear 😍
Took over the clubs the boom boxes, cars and jeeps when it had dropped and they brought back the missing element to all music SOUL !!! CARON WHEELER IS STILL UNDERRATED
Tune!!!! I was 20 when this came out and it really was the soundtrack to that summer. I spent a lot of nights in rock and alternative clubs back then and this was played in all of them! And the dance floor was full every time, punks, goths, heavy rock fans, all getting their groove on. Still sounds as fresh now as it did back then, an absolute classic!
This beat! This that song you just keep hitting repeat.
A Happy Face, a thumping bass, for a loving race - Soul II Soul aka The Funki Dreads mantra (or something very similar). Jazzie B was the man behind Soul II Soul- he played the keyboard round his shoulder.
Loads of kids in UK, 1989, wearing Soul II Soul trackies bought from the Soul II Soul shops, Travel Fox trainers (MF DOOM references these) listening to this, De La Soul, acid and house music (hence the housey piano in this track), hip house was chart music popular- (a hybrid of house and hip hop which commonly sampled the Woo/Yeah call and response speeded up) from Jungle Brothers and the likes of Tyree feat Kool Rock Steady, MC Duke, Rebel MC, Beatmasters, Coldcut...
Nellie Hooper also from Soul II Soul, on the other keyboards, went on to produce songs for Madonna, U2 and other pop stars of the time.
Thank you, was trying to remember the mantra
THIS MAN KNOWS
Still got my funk dred leather jacket, bought from the soul ll Soul shop in Tottenham High Street.
Jay if you like this, this is a banger that I don’t think I’ve seen anyone do before MASSIVE ATTACK - UNFINISHED SYMPHONY :)
I just came on and said the same thing. I hope he hears us, 😊
Yes!
It's actually Unfinished Sympathy but everyone calls it Unfinished Symphony 😊
Yuss!
@@watersideanimals215 ☺️
This era of music was amazing! With tracks like this you can understand when people say music is over manufactured today. We have very few musicians in the charts these days.
agree but don't forget Clean Bandit so they haven't all gone
If there was one place I would be, it would be in this video. I loved the smooth vacation vibes, the colors of the video and the clothes and the soft but jammin’ music.
@@eggy1962 no, far from gone. Just less raw talent these days. I have faith it will turn round again. History always repeats itself in some ways, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for more individual style of musicians 🤞 😉
@@krissiep1317 definitely. It would be amazing! Definitely (as Jamiroquai would say...) a good vibe zone ☺ 🤗
@@ZenoAke3610 its Bands that are missing, charts are full of single artists.
I love this song. If you want another smooth song in a similar style from another UK artist, give "Close To You" from Maxi Priest a go... another amazing song and it hit #1 in the U.S. in 1990.
Ginger bollocks
OMG Yes!!!
Great choice :)
Yes yes yes!
Yessss!
That whole album was fire! Check out the acapella version on this song, it's even better.
Maurice Cain... Hell yeah it is! If you like songs sung a Capella by strong vocalists... You should listen to Amy Lee of Evanescence. "Sober"... You can find it on UA-cam. It's acoustic... But I'm my opinion beautiful without all the guitars in the original version. Though that version is great too.
Oh yes I agree
A capella version is not better than this, the original. It's not bad though.
@@jmrx12 Actually the acapella version was the original. This version from the video and played on the radio was recorded after Caron did the acapella track. And to me, the acapella is much better. Caron's vocals on thr acapella are out of this world and the beat drop at the end is legendary.
@@delmarthomas3495 how in the world can it be better, when in this version you have a KILLER (almost) a symphony playing behind her??
Saw them live at Brixton Academy when this single was in the charts. Oh my days what a time to be young.
RIP to Melissa Bell (not the lead singer)she died in 2017 from diabetic complications...her daughter won X-Factor can't remember when.
This is one of those songs that you jam to every time you hear it 💎
You’re killing it today!! You pick the best songs! Summer of 1989!!!!! I love you J! ❤️😘
Yes! The year I graduated and got my first car..a 79 Camaro! Couldn’t tell me nuttin! 😂Great year of fun and SO music great music! (Well that’s the entire 80’s for me..great music!) Of course! ✌️🌼 EDIT: “Keep on Movin” was the other one!

Another fantastic group: LOOSE ENDS
British 80s R & B
Hanging on A String, Stay A Little While Child, Slow Down, You Can't Stop the Rain. Lead singer: Jane Eugene (also a great songwriter)

Hell, yeah! I have their Greatest Hits. Loved them!
This and Keep on Movin are 💯. Keep on Moving might be my favorite though it’s so smooth

Mine too Boss tune love it
Yes! The other one that I loved! Was on the tip of my tongue! Senior year for me!
Keep On Moving is my favorite also.
Would that be fair was also fyah
This song is "Old School".. loved dancing to it back in the day at the clubs... it still awesome AF.
The group was founded by Jazzy B, the guy with the dreadlocks and dark glasses playing the keyboard. At that time he had a clothing Line and his own store and a radio show. He was ahead of his time.
I can’t stress enough how important it is you check out Blue Pearl ‘Dancing Naked in the Rain’, Coldcut ‘Autumn Leaves’, Zoe ‘Sunshine on a Rainy Day’ and DNA feat. Suzanne Vega ‘Tom’s Diner’ for a truly great 90s vibe.
This song reminds me of when we went on a cruise a long, long time ago. They treat you like royalty during the.actual cruise. But then they kick you out of your room when you dock back home. So there we all were, hanging out on a stairway, waiting our. turn to leave the ship. And we started singing this song. LOL Every time I hear 🎼“Back to life, back to reality”🎼, I think of that day. 🤣💗
A full teenager @ that time clubbing in what were so called 14-17 dance clubs, no alccol for sure. Them along with Inner City, Technotronic, black artists with dance club vibes, wonderful.
k klass let me show was a banger back in the day, best time ever!!!
amen!
indeed, when parties were really just about the music and enjoying together. ok, and about making out too :-))
Yep no booze. Just good trips.. like these 🙂🙂🙂. Who would have thought "this"would be an "emoji"
My goodness, the memories this track brings back!! This whole album was stunning. I was staying with my sis in Hackney that summer, doing work experience for a fashion designer, I was 20. Soo long ago! This was such a new sound and copied by many. Keep On Moving and Missing You from that album are also a must.
I remember my mom and dad used to play this while cleaning the house back in the early 90s. Brings back good childhood memories.
Known by those of the early '90s in the UK as London BASE !!
Tha lady spinning her hair and dancing in the background is the best
I think her name is Caron Wheeler.
@@AVONAZ100 Caron is the singer
Rip to her who passed away shoplifter and trying to get away and got struck by a car coming in the parking lot
You are on a roll tonight. I have great memories of this song. 1989 end of the decade and music transitioning.
It already changed in 1987.
I loved this group and especially this song. They are/were a British group. During this time there was kind of a wave of black Brits showing us Anericans we were not the only soulful singers. It was nice to see and hear. The lead singers name is Karen Wheeler. She had a few solo releases. She is amazing.
Oh I remember this song so distinctly...the 80s were ending and new music was starting to emerge. Great time in life💚💜
Thanks for reminding me of this song. Sounds great in 2021.👍
They were ahead of their time. I still absolutely love this song. ❤
The beat from these late 80s early 90s songs was the shizzle! Never gets old. :)
Everytime I hear this song I think of Will Smith dancing to it on the Fresh Prince of Bel Air 🥰🥰🥰
Oh yeah he would be killing it then uncle Phil would come in look at him and start dancing with the audience goin crazy lol 😆
The very first episode! When he was stapling the poster on his bedroom wall!
Yes exactly same!!
@@beakersgarage383 yep that’s exactly it 😂🙌🏽
Loved that show. Back when black songs and shows opened up so much fun and culture for other races. Everyone loved them. Now everything is so serious and separates.
You gotta do Keep On Moving another great jam by Soul 2 Soul.
It's a song that most people like even if they not into hip hop. It covers everything.
This jam just makes you want to move loved it from the first time they released it all them years ago
Haven't heard this badass song in a minute!
Used to love this song because it was just a dreamy smooth groove but had a big thumping beat underpinning it.
80’s Inxs song “tear us apart” had a lot of violins. It’s a amazing song and absolutely love the video in Prague on a grey day. Another good song of theirs is “ beautiful girl”
This is a song that stands the test of time! One of my faves :)
Who also remembers De La Soul Me myself and I.
Absolutely! Mirror Mirror on the wall...
And ‘Buddy’, an underrated song but just as good!
Haven't heard this is so long! Thanks for reacting!
An absolute monster. Jazzy B is a genius. The British music scene was becoming a bit bland in 89 and then Keep On Moving followed by this just blew everything else out the water. You could sense their influences but the sound was unique. This gave me goosebumps hearing it first time and now getting them again. Caron Wheeler has the voice of an angel. And that video looks no way over thirty years old. A piece of artistic magic for the world to enjoy forever. Definitely check out 'Keep On Moving' and 'Get A Life'.
Man you always pick the right tunes. All I can say is that Soul 2 Soul blew up and made black people proud to be British. We had ZERO black musical icons, they were all American. Seeing them do their thing was a game changer.
If the video doesn't get blocked, try "A Roller Skating Jam Named 'Saturdays'" by De La Soul.
Love it! One of my favorites! 💙
@@salwashabazz7329 I always tried to find the song that I thought said "saturday is the saddest day", but it’s not even the lyrics. Until Spotify recommended me a song called Saturday, by Hazzaro (try to find it, if you also like house music. It has a sample of this De La Soul song). With Shazam, I was finally able to discover the music that was always stuck in my head and I was never able to discover it.
I’ll have to check out the other one...Saturday by Hazzaro 🙂
The guitar-shaped keyboard is called a "key-tar" and was big in the 80's to early 90's.

This song never gets old to me. I love everything about this song. A Very well put together song. From Caron Wheelers vocals to all the instruments. I love ❤️ it! ❤️🎶
Her solo effort "Living In the Light" was also a massive club-banger a few years later (1992) and a great song.
love that song (and video)!! Caron's family is Jamaican and the song & album is about the experience of coming from Jamaica to Britain I believe (album is called UK Blak). @jayveetv you should check out "Living in the Light" 💜
This song never gets old, grew up listening to this since childhood. My dad would always play this song loads back in the days 😂
There's good things and bad things in every time period but I will never feel sorry being at clubbing age in the late 80s / early 90s.

You can only imagine how I felt at 15 when this came out and I was in awe. This was THE song that year. Unlike so many other songs it still sounds as fresh today as it did then. Jazzie B is a genius. Love Soul II Soul. Caron Wheeler used to live just around the corner from me, too.
