UK is for sure a country, technically Scotland is not... I could see accepting both, but if you're going to be strict, UK is officially a country. Scotland is more correctly a 'nation', but not a Country recognized by anyone else, no one has like a Scottish Embassy and there's no such thing as Scottish citizenship.
Scotland had a vote in 2014 to become its own country, and they voted no. But both UK and Scotland should have been accepted as answers.

If you ask anyone in the UK if the UK is a country, the answer will be "Yes". If you ask them what Scotland is within the UK, the answer will be "a constituent country" or "a home country" of the UK, which is "a country made of countries" .

You're right of course, and clearly both answers were correct. But apart from the inherent confusion of the UK being a country of countries, the word country is itself rather vague and limited. It would be clearer, and more correct, to refer to the United Kingdom as a (sovereign) state made up of different countries/nations/regions.
But of course North Americans are not accustomed to this use of the word 'state'.

The most important criteria of a country is that other countries recognize you as a country, which is the case with the UK as a whole, by the rest of the world. If lets say spain, tomorrow says that all these entities(england, nothren ireland, wales, scotland and lol cornwall) within the UK are countries, then spain would basicly be saying all these entities are indepedent of eachother, hence supporting independence movements and saying they are not part of the UK, which is either a declaration of war on spains side, or atleast saying the UK should not be allowed to represent all these area's according to spain.
Also another criteria, is that a part of your land cannot just say goodbye and do their own stuff. Like the european union is not a country, but at most a confederation, which is not a country, cause their members can leave, when they wanr. Scotland cannot not leave the union one sided, hence making the UK a country, and in fact, in a legal sense, making scotland not a country under international law. From a legal international law perspective, the only right answer is the UK, and saying Scotland is actually the wrong answer.

The situation is somewhat ambiguous as before the acts of union passed in 1707 both Scoland and England where kingdoms ( not countries), with Wales being a lesser kingdom of england.
The acts disolved them into one kingdom known as Great Britain. (This was before Ireland joined and we became the UK.
I'm not even sure the term country was used at the time and by all means I guess both England and Scotland should have stopped being referred to as countries but I don't think anyone liked the idea.

Technically in international sense UK is a country and Scotland is a region of the UK, if we were to dumb it down really hard. This topic is not easy, however In "internal laws" and documents between states of the UK it is different, but when you ask "what country is X in" and its in the UK - you cant say "no, its in Northern Ireland therefore you are wrong" unless you specify you don't count "The UK" as an answer. Because in traditional sense "country" = internationally recognized entity with certain traits. And Scotland is a part of The UK, that is itself a sovereign state(=country) and arguably has more sovereignty.
Just like if you ask "What country is Grand Canyon in" - you expect the answer to be The US, not Arizona.
@vitorossi7839 the confusion here is that yes, politically the UK is considered a country. The reason for this is it all has the same overarching governance. I.e the crown. If it was a political question, then sure, the context of that becomes relevant. But it wasn't. Historically and geographically, England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are seperate countries. With their own prime ministers and their own borders. It's like if Europe had a king, you'd have to consider Europe to be one country politically, because of the technicality of a monarchy. But clearly Italy and Sweden are not the same country.
To classify the UK as one country only makes sense when talking about government legislation. Not what country is Edinburgh in.
