Reloading is essential to make a better kill shot. 140gr Barnes TSX bullet and 46gr IMR4064 powder make 2700fps muzzle speed and tight grouping in significantly light recoil.
As a reloader myself, I found it interesting to watch your video. Good basic equipment and technique, using reloading manuals and local advice to get a good start and do it right. I found comments and advice from those with little or no knowledge about reloading entertaining too. You're doing very well at it.
Waco the 270 was my first deer rifle and it also was my first reload! I went on to 300 weatherby mag then to 338 mag which is my last rifle to buy and it is my favorite! Using a 225 gr bullet and 4350 powder I filled the case to the top and it was still under the max load! I am glad to see you doing this it brings back great memories! Enjoy my friend!
John Cormier, what was your overall cartridge length for your 270 Winchester reloads. Wikipedia lists 3.84 inches, while Hogdgen lists 3.18 inch. With a case length of 2.54, it would have to be a long bullet to make the 3.84 inch length.
Alfred Colley brother it has been too long ago ! I gave my reloading supplies to my youngest son! I will tell you that Nosler reloading gave me the most accurate loads! I used to put a bullet in an empty cartridge and put it in my rifle then work the bolt to close it against the rifling then put it back in the press to bring it down another bit to clear the point to work through the rifle or it would hang up! Little by little till you have the best for your rifle!!
I started with reloading on the same RCBS kit - some 15 years ago. I can relate to you now even more - after you became a rifleman and a reloader. Wish you good hunting.
Thanks Doc, love your videos, I think I love your struggle with finding the right word in English to describe what you are doing most. It makes your video so great to watch, and I love the content too. Thank you. Please keep doing the wonderful videos.
Thanks, You've perked my interest in reloading .270. I like your slow way of talking. I had an electronics teacher that spoke that way and my brain took it in deeper than when spoke quickly. My mind was free to drift think and not focus just on hearing correctly. Too bad about those prices 'cuz ammo is about $1-$1.25 here in U.S. and you could probably reload for about $.50.
I am excited about your upcoming videos this hunting season! I really appreciate your attention to detail, Wako. I thoroughly enjoy your videos! I hope you will compare the wound cavities made by both cartridges, and their overall effect on the game that you hunt (does one provide more DRT, do they run more/farther when shot, etc). It'll be interesting to hear your observations of both cartridges by the end of the season. Most hunters only get to shoot 1-2 dear per season, where you get to shoot upwards of 100. you shoot more deer in one year than most people shoot in their entire life. That is a great test size!
That's the best video I've seen on how to reload your own ammo! Very informative and easy to understand. Great! If you feel like making more video's about your rifle, scope and other gear it would be very interesting!
I agree, hand loading is very relaxing for me I also load 270 with Barnes LRX 130 gr Great video, nice to see deer hunting and gun enthusiasts in Japan
Dr. Waco, thanks to you and a friend of mine and recent world events convincing me I have to go full-on prepping I have gotten a reloading setup. Same as yours. I found that in resizing the up-stroke was much easier if I simply brushed out the neck. No lube. I'd beef up that bench of yours as well. Great video and it definitely convinced me that reloading was well within my abilities. The trickiest aspect of the whole deal to me is figuring out the exact dimensions of a particular rifle's chamber and throat dimensions. A simple way to do it just make up a dummy cartridge that is significantly too long. Blacken it with butane lighter soot and chamber it. Keep shortening it until the soot is not disturbed by the rifling. Presto! You have the OAL for that rifle with minimal jump. You have to be careful with chambering and ejecting and discerning lands and groove marking from other markings. It is harder with an AR type rifle.
Enjoyed the video. Very thorough. Im from New Zealand and have family living in japan. We have Sika over here but do not get the nice racks you do over there. Would like to come over and shoot one, one day. After this video i will be looking into reloading my .270 myself. looks like fun and looks like you can get it down to a fine art. I ahoot 500+ rounds a year so i could save a few $$ while im at it.Cheers.
Well done. I myself have a Howa in 308 and it is excellent. I started reloading amd the groups are veey good for a hunting rifle. That is a very gopd group for 300 metres. Also if your resizing remember to check a few empty shells in your rifles chamber for tightness or hard bolt close. If tightness occurs it is either Brass not full sized properly, screw size down !/4
Few points to consider and couple of hints: You should bolt/attach your work table to a wall or use sturdier table to mount your reloading press. It is much better to work on bedrock-stable platform. Deburring inside of the case mouth is done because otherwise the case mouth would shave bits of copper off the bullet surface. It is essential especialy after one has trimmed the cases. I usually trim my cases after they are 0,2 mm over the trim-to lenght or over the max case lenght. The initial case cleaning in my favored method is done with vibratory case tumbler. I have found that best media is corn cob with some Dillon Rapid Polish or similar additive. Having some sort of media separator is handy. I usually don´t lubricate the inside of the case neck. One could argue that the returning case neck expander plug might cause unnecessary increase in the case lenght when no lubricant is used. I have streamlined my reloading process by skipping this phase. I lay couple of hundred cleaned cases in an old shoe box and spray them with Dillon case lubricant. This lubricant is a mix of alcohol and lanolin and its important to let the alcohol evaporate few minutes before resizing. Too wet case could get stuck in the die. After resizing I give the cases a quick 15 minute in the tumbler to remove the resizing lube. I don´t want any lubricant between the cartridge and chamber wall since it increases the stress the gun breech must endure. Inspecting the primer hole before priming is important because every now and then there is a corn cob particle stuck in the channel. I don´t clean the primer pockets. I have not saw the need for it. Tumbler takes care most of the residue anyway. Using the powder trickler is not necessary unless the used powder has a large granular size. I have done it with Vihtavuori N140, N150 and Hodgdon Varget powders only. However this is dependent on how accurate the powder measure is. My cheap Lee Perfect Powder Measure is suprisingly accurate even with the more granular powders. Keep up the good work. Deer season is coming soon!
I Understand what he is saying by just having the bullets Starting to touch the Lands in the rifle will increase your Accuracy a lot thanks for sharing your great video
As a suggestion. Dies that use an internal button to resize the neck produce less accurate loads as well as the difficulty you are having pulling it through. They cause run out and a round that is not concentric. Dies that have an external bushing to resize are more precise.. Take a look a Forster products as an example. You (may)need to have several bushings on hand in case the wall thickness of the case changes, but it's not a problem. When you're sizing externally that (wall thickness) will change the inside diameter. Accuracy loading includes adjusting the neck case wall thickness. Wilson hand dies are the extreme.
Nice tutorial. Save yourself some time and make a mixture of 1 oz RCBS case lube and 16oz of 91% isopropyl alcohol in a spray bottle. Put your empty brass in a baggie, box or on a cookie tray and spray them. Let alcohol evaporate and start sizing. Lube pads do not get the neck and shoulder of the case. I use 52g of IMR 4350 with a 140g Sierra Game King as my round. Good luck this coming season.
Nice shooting! I LOVE my Savage .270, it really drops the deer! What are those euro mounts behind you? Elk? Cool looking racks? What animals do you hunt out there? That's great that the shooting sports are alive and well out there! Respect from the USA.
Like others have said, I don't the Barnes bullets... they're super hard and so doesn't expand much if any when coming in contact with flesh. Last deer season I purchased a 100 of these bullet tips for around 35.00 after tax. After shooting a deer, the exit wound was the same size as the entry wound. If the bullet had expanded, I probably wouldn't of had to track the deer for such a long way! I now buy wheel weight lead, cast my own 130gr bullets and trying out the 150gr whereby dropping them in cold water to quench and harden them. Now the lead is hard enough that it doesn't lead up my barrel but soft enough to mushroom out a bit and causing more damage to where if you don't hit in the sweet spot, the deer isn't going to make it as far and so saving you some work of tracking up n down the hills
I am glad you are in the reloading. Fine RCBS equipment - good choice. Sorry I did not have the time to watch the whole video but I did not see trimming the brass - I presume is off camera. Have a great day!
I have never trimmed the brass. The owner of the gun shop says trimming is needed after lots of repeated use. So I haven't purchased the trimming tool yet. Thanks.
Get out your Calipers and Measure the Length :) I usually trim some of my Brass after the first use! If your Brass is to long it might "bite" on your Bullet and cause excessive Pressure and erratic Point of Impact. Of course, measure AFTER resizing/Neck Sizing. You should also consider a Neck Sizer. It's much easier on the Brass than Full Lenght Sizing.
virtuovice Wacosan, Get yourself a Wilson case gauge, read the directions very carefully, and disabuse yourself of what the owner of the gun shop has told you.
sjeverett75 I gave up debarring since I knew it was meaningless. I got a trimming device and will use it every 5 shots or so for a single casing followed by debarring. Thanks.
It is good to know that the shooting sports are alive and well in Japan. It is rare to see this. Are there any special state (governmental) regulations or requirements to belong to a rifle club there? Do you use a tumbler? How many times do you reuse your brass? Thanks.
I do not like Barnes bullets. For me, they do not expand if you hit soft tissue. I once shot an elk through the lungs and the exit hole was the same diameter as the entrance. I will not use Barnes bullets anymore. It will be interesting to see how those bullets compare to your shotgun slugs. I hope they work for you.
U can also get a classic lee loader for about 40.00 US. It sizes the neck of the case so u ddont have as much stretch on the case. It will do all steps required. I also use 4064 .i think the best all around powder. I also use 140g bullet. 270 seems to be most accurate around 2700 to 2800 fps.
I am going to call the outside two shots flyers, or you may have pulled them. Either way great shooting at that distance. Any flaws in the bullet that cannot be seen with the naked eye, or slight differences in trigger pull will cause those two "flyers", especially at that distance, and I would not even count them in the group. So 5cm at 300m is slightly less than MOA. Once again, Great shooting.
Interesting. I got lowest muzzle velocity standard deviation of 4.6 fps using IMR4350 powder, Nozler fire-formed brass, full length resized with a shoulder bump of 0.002" , and 130 gr Barnes TTSX seated 0.050" off the lands. I've also had success with RL-22 powder.
By the way, welcome to the world of reloading. It'll quickly take over your life like the rest of us... Though you might be lucky, because there are only a few calibers you reload. Over here in the US, we can reload anything and everything under the sun. 7.7 Arisaka is kinda hard to buy at the local store. :D
Wako practices just before he heads out to stalk the deer, so he is sharp... That's why he is wearing camo and orange. OR, he is in America to take our game because he has stripped the eastern continent if it's meat ;-)
Doctor, 17:32 You are checking for powder. Have you ever thought of using Digital scale to weigh the case before priming it with powder, then after? So you also don't double load the case with powder as well as making sure you don't forget to load the case with powder?
Instead of spraying each case primer pockets Try using some Motor Mica, It's a Powder type Graphite that works great & does not harm the primers for use etc.
Time spent reloading has an opportunity cost. The cost-savings, for me anyway, only really exists if I "bill" my time spent at the bench as "therapy." :)
at approximately 9:35 as you begin to lower the case, it appears that you have some resistance, is this something normal, when I get to this point I have a lot, to the point I have stopped and will seek the advice of someone that could let me know what I may be doing incorrect
Old video but still worth the comment; try a different resizing lubricant or dry neck lube like the ones seen below. It looks like you are having to really work the brass to resize it and that's going to harden the neck/shoulder quickly and limit the number of times you can reload each cartridge case. www.redding-reloading.com/online-catalog/79-imperial-lubricants
virtuovice What are the distances on your rifle range? In the US, they start at 25 meters, then 50, 75, 100, and 200 meters, then some ranges go to 300, 600 and 1000 meters.
if your casing is getting stuck in the chamber you need to do a few things. one you need to make sure you resize the whole casing if you have not done it some dies only resize the neck. this is a must if you are using brass that was not fired from you gun to begin with . next you need to double check your load data. generally if your brass is getting stuck in your gun or your bolt is hard to move after you fired you have too much powder in that load
Must be some kind of miscommunication. 300m = 328 yards. Looking at the technique used (no rear bag) and you got that kind of group with a hunting rifle and relatively low power scope at 328 yards? That's hard to believe. That must have been closer than 328 yards.
I am used to this way of firing winding the sling around my left arm to stabilize the stock. 140gr TSX bullet makes better grouping than 130gr one at 300 meters while at 150 meters they make the same grouping like 3 inches. I aimed at the top of the paper and the drop was 10 inches when the scope is zero at 150 meters. So I decide to use the 140gr bullet for a distant deer. Thanks.
If it is not going 3000fps or faster most Americans yawn. Me not included. 285/6gr bullet at high 2300's is been killing everything in Africa for over a 100 yrs. However even though it's been proven that shot placement is everything there's still ppl that will opt for a 505 Gibbs, El Paso Texas for me.
He probably did not know the 'range shooting apparel police' would be watching his video. I often shoot at the range completely naked, with proper eye and ear protection of course. Do you approve of that ?
Wako practices just before he heads out to stalk the deer, so he is sharp... That's why he is wearing camo and orange. OR, he is in America to take our game because he has stripped the eastern continent if it's meat ;-)

Thanks form the video, I learned to powder charge just a bit less and then top off with the trickler.
Good video. $5/round vs. $2/round is an obvious choice, especially since correctly hand loaded rounds tend to be more accurate than the factory ones.

great video. Very Informative
Thank you. That was interesting.
thanks for the informative video
The mice are very fond of the RCBS Case Lube. They have never shown any interest in my other lubes, HaHa!

Very informative. Please make sure firearms video in English. Thanks
Awesome

hi,
how do you clean your brass? Thx.

excellent video Doc! I thought you bought a 308? ? Didn't you use a .308 in your last hunting video?
I have both 308 and 270. 308 is powerful enough in the mountain here. 270 reaches long enough in the pasture here. I love their light recoil. Thanks.

Old video but still worth the comment; try a different resizing lubricant or dry neck lube like the ones seen below. But how much is the initial reloading equipment worth?
I remember they cost me about $800. Here the gun equipment is twice as pricey as in the US.
virtuovice Ouch, $800, in the US, the reloading kit you have right now can be had for about $300, give or take tax
N Chau And even less used if you can find a good garage or estate sale. Never pay retail, right? :)

There's a shooting range in Japan? Where is this?
Almost all prefectures has one rifle range. In this large Hokkaido prefecture we have 5 rifle ranges. Thanks.
virtuovice What are the distances on your rifle range? In the US, they start at 25 meters, then 50, 75, 100, and 200 meters, then some ranges go to 300, 600 and 1000 meters.
N Chau The range where I go has 50, 100, 150, 300 meter distances.
Had problem reloading my .270 WSM casing always stock in the chamber after I fired
if your casing is getting stuck in the chamber you need to do a few things. one you need to make sure you resize the whole casing if you have not done it some dies only resize the neck. this is a must if you are using brass that was not fired from you gun to begin with . next you need to double check your load data. generally if your brass is getting stuck in your gun or your bolt is hard to move after you fired you have too much powder in that load
Thanks.
Very slow velocity, im getting 2950fps with 140gn SSTs.
He has no need for increased velocity plus his recoil is less and accuracy is improved.
Why are you wearing camo and hunters orange at the shooting range. It's not like you are actually hunting.
I always wear a camo shirt even in a city. And I need the shoulder pad of the hunting vest for the recoil.
He probably did not know the 'range shooting apparel police' would be watching his video. I often shoot at the range completely naked, with proper eye and ear protection of course. Do you approve of that ?
Robnord1 if you wipe the stool after your done...

Soon as I see this way of shooting from a bench this manner you get a thumbs down 👎 immediately!
Wtf ??
Wako practices just before he heads out to stalk the deer, so he is sharp...
That's why he is wearing camo and orange.
OR, he is in America to take our game because he has stripped the eastern continent if it's meat ;-)
