- The clutch master cylinder does a lot of work, and eventually wears out or leaks
This is a long video showing how to restore and set up a master cylinder in the tower from start to finish
Applies to all manual Defenders and Series trucks from Series 2 onwards

No words to describe how awesome are this videos for us geeking on land rovers
The only one I found on youtube that knows what he doing and how to show how to do it
Thanks!
Thank you. I have been preparing to do this very job on my 110 and I was concerned about some of the issues I might come across and you covered all of them very clearly. Thank you again.
No problems John!
Mike
You are worth your weight in gold!!!! I was about to attempt changing my master cylinder on the vehicle, but seeing what a struggle it is even with the pedal box on the bench I think that idea is a non starter, is taking of the pedal box much of a problem, it all looks very restricted on the bulkhead, even topping up the fluid is a test of will! Many thanks for posting this! Chris B.
No, it is quite simple on a RHD
Thank you from Spain
You are welcome!
Thanks, Mike! Diving into our replacement this weekend. Cheers!
Have fun!
Britannica Restorations Ltd Will do! LHD fun this weekend with this replacement.
Thank you so much for creating this video and the tips, in the end, our project was a success! Oh, just sent ya an email to from the link on Britrest.com.
Cheers!
I liked this when it first came out. Now as I am about to do my series 3 clutch, I like it even better. Thanks Mike and have a wonderful New Year!
Thanks, you too!
Mike, all good stuff, learning a lot
Greats stuff Dave!
Thanks Mike, another great video, I am having problems trying to get pressure on my pedal after replacing master and slave on my series 3. I will work through all your suggestions! Any one else find themselves moving around to try and see down the casting?? Cheers Steve
Funny how this popped into my feed today. If you haven't run out of the Lockheed rubber grease, Castrol make it - known as GRR(B) aka red rubber grease.
Yes I can get it from Britpart
Great video thanks! Really has helped with the rebuild of my pedal box :-)
Any idea what the part number is for the shim that fits between cylinder and box? My one is missing.
Cheers
Nice information, a week late though.
Did this last week - but I didn't check for grease behind the seal :-( Now its back in place - and I won't like to take it out again :-)
Not easy to get out of a Left hand Drive eh?
I do not know why they do not put any lubrication on the piston - probably to save 1 cent!
Mike
Mike if you adjust the end nut as you say , would that not pull the rod out the cylinder and give you to much free play . It is what i found , but if i ran the other nut finger tight and then the nut on the end lock it up i have minimal free play . i set mine to about 10mm the book says 6mm . Have you got the procedure in reverse . Or am i way off .
Mike, my wolf has springs on the pedal(45% easier to push the pedal apparently) do I take them off for this process
Greetings from the USA. Very good video! Articulated very well, concise and to the point. I have a Series 2 1968 left hand drive 109. Unfortunately in my case my clutch pedal is very much froze and I need to do a full disassembly. I have the lube hole on the side of the box itself but oil and WD-40 are not helping. Master cylinder is removed and it takes extreme force to move pedal. What is the best way to remove the pin so I can remove clutch pedal? Thank you.
Michael
There is a roll pin holding the pivot pin in place at the end sometimes - knock this out and press out the pivot pin
@@BritannicaRestorations Thanks for the advice, I will give it a shot!
Can you tell me please how this pedal box is removed from a LHD defender ? Do you have to remove the wing or move the brake servo ?
remove the brake master cylinder without removing the pipes and swing it away, then remove the brake tower - rest is easy
Appreciate the tutorial 👍 Already replaced the slave cylinder, easy, but the master,... not
It is not easy to get in and out - especially out of a Left land drive
Mike
I really want to order some parts of my Landrover defender 110,,,but how can I do that? I'm from PNG port Moresby
I have a freelander 2 with front wipers that won't park in the correct place! I don't know if the control system is electronic or mechanical as in the 110 in the video.
I have no idea - only worked on one in the past - not common cars here
Another impressive and wonderfully simplified video on land rover restoration - its a brilliant series , thankyou. Hopefully you can help with this problem......Im a new owner and novice.....my clutch on a 1958 (2wd) series 2 works well for 10-15mins and then goes firm and does not disengage fully. There's A lot of gear clashing going to 1st and reverse from neutral. I bled the system and changed the DOT 4 , no help. Replaced the master cylinder after watching your video. No help. Ive noticed there's no return spring on the slave or the pedal but it didn't have a problem before. I'm going to try it with springs in place. Any ideas?
Yes, it should have a spring
Hi Mike, can you use copper grease on the piston? thanks for the amazing vid.
Nope it is too gritty and dries out - rubber grease or white lithium grease is best
36:02 - what kind of ratcheting spanner did you use in there?
the only thing I can find to fit are brake line spanners - I'm considering cutting an access slot to adjust on the vehicle.
This type 5/16

@@BritannicaRestorations Muchly appreciated.
Are the master cylinders all the same from the late 2a through series 3 and Defenders
The 2a didn't have a built in reservoir
@@BritannicaRestorations I have a 2a with built in reservoir. It's just a late model 2a. I got same trw master. Your video was great! Thank you for showing me how to properly set it up😁
How do you bleed the Master/Slave system. I cannot get a firm peddle.
Have to got flow from the master cylinder with the pedal at rest?
"Moisture and water in the fluid" fit a new master and slave then fill with silicone brake fluid.... fit and forget.. don't forget to label it.

I am in Canada, and I have no idea who would be a local supplier - maybe Australia would be a good place to search - I get my parts from LRDirect in the UK - but I would expect shipping would be expensive!
