    This is a fantastic idea, I just followed your instructions and stopped an icy cold draft from coming into my living room. I used a pool noodle instead of pipe wrap, which I got at the Dollar Store last summer for $1. Thanks again for helping to keep me warm!

      Glad this works for you. Yes, a pool noodle is a great item, too. Pipe wrap is far more common in Alaska than pool noodles! :)

      Thanks for the pool noodle idea. The cost of pipe wrap has really shot UP...!

      actually the foam is working fine I got a lil crafty with it I siliconed down a 3 foot piece in the track just as your video showed then I siliconed a 41 inch piece up the side that opens to the bottom of the handle I used silicone because I can just peel it off when the season change again plus because I found 10 ounce tubes of GE IRONGRIP SILICONE ADHESIVE for like $1.50 per tube the foam was like $2 for a 6 foot piece at Lowes you saved me through the winter i'm in Florida it may get to the 20's I trusted your word immediately because after all you are in Alaska

    Could you put this on the sides vertically as well? I’m trying to winterize my sliding glass door, but I still want to be able to open it. Also, I rent, so I’m not trying to spend too much or do something permanent. Thank you!

    • @AlaskaGranny

      I found that placing it at the bottom is where the air is actually leaking in. Try this at the bottom, and then check to see if air is actually leaking on the sides. If so, I would add a thermal curtain over the entire window. They are not that spendy, considering the amount of heat loss through a window. Check out something like this. amzn.to/2nQilnI If there are existing curtains, you could even add a long bungee cord across the top inside the curtain rod, and hook it to that. I have several sliders, and still use them all year. In fact, this morning, I tried to open one, and the screen was frozen in the track. Made me laugh.

      A long rubber strip taped to one door which overlaps the other doors. Maybe an old bike tire inner tube.

  • @Lughnerson
    @Lughnerson 2 роки тому +2

    I am so disappointed in myself for not thinking of this, since I use those pipe insulators and pool noodles for everything. Example: between car seats to stop losing things. On my bike rack as a cushion.

    Thanks for the video. We can easily apply this to sliding windows bottom as well. But how about the vertical gaps between them? Do you have any tips for this part too? We have two old up/side sliding window outside and two left/right sliding windows inside, and really worried for winter time since there is draft even in nice weather and makes our lovely flat very cold. Please some tips.

      I would try adding insulating curtains. They are inexpensive, and really work. They have a rubbery backing and also work as black out curtains. You can hang them in front of shades or blinds if you have those. Here is a link to the kind I use. They come in lots of colors and sizes. amzn.to/2csSrNp Thanks for watching and I hope this helps.

    What are the dimensions of the pipe wrap that you used?

    • @AlaskaGranny
      @AlaskaGranny  7 років тому +1

      I think pipe wrap is sized according to the hole in the middle, that is the size of the pipe it fits around. I measured mine, and I think the hole is 1 inch, and it is about 2 inches in diameter. Look for the wrap that seems dense, not very flexible. It is easy to cut with a serrated knife, and is cheap. We already are below freezing, and the ponds are frozen solid. Glad I have mine to use again!
