Another stellar Splash Wave! It's so easy to fall into the trap so many other gaming retrospective channels do, endlessly retelling stories about games without going into detail and getting lost in their own echo chamber. When I watch Splash Wave, though, I actually LEARN new and interesting things about the games, programmers and musicians whose influence molded young, impressionable me's worldview as much as my own family did. These deep-dives are spellbinding, and when they're over I wonder how and why it's taken so long for such amazing stories to be brought into the light. The editing and effects work on display here is awesome, too! Keep it up, and it won't be long before this channel blows up!
Shinobi 3 will always be my favorite sega game. Everything about it was perfect. Smooth. fast paced and fluid controls. Amazing music and art. Truly a masterpiece.
These two games had a HUGE impact on my life and my musical writing style when writing for games, absolutely amazing, especially Shinobi. Yuzo is a genius.
absolutely amazing video. Love your research and the care and attention you've put into this. I was so glad you took the time to dive into the beginning of Yuzo Koshiro's legacy. All this is a piece of time that we get to know now as a true turning point in gaming and multi-media story telling. At the time, they were just fresh-faced graduates and doing what they thought was right. All the handshakes man. This truly is spell binding work.
Great video as always. I especially liked learning about Shinobi III, my favourite action platformer. I had no idea how drastic changes it went through, but it definitely paid off.
The more I've gone back and played it over the years, the more convinced I've become that Shinobi III is the best Shinobi game in the series. I used to be partial to Revenge of Shinobi but in retrospect I think its successor is the better of the two. At any rate they are both all-time classics.
I think the level design and Boss attack patterns are more advanced in Revenge of Shinobi, but Shinobi III is overall a smoother, faster and more exciting game to play.
Shinobi III was a masterpiece. One of my all time favourite games on the Megadrive to be sure, and I keep running into people who thought Koshiro did the score, so it must have been that good. The extra moves really made it and it pushed the system to the limits in terms of graphical effects. Streets of Rage was good but it was a Final Fight clone at the end of the day, and they obviously used the Revenge of Shinobi engine to make it (or at least the assets from it). Still a great game though, if a little dated now.
Thank you for diving deep into the musical aspects of these games. Shinobi and streets of rage were both favorites of mine at a young age, I'd go on to discover and enjoy music like aphex twin a few years later... Now wondering if these games paved the way. Awesome vid
Although I liked the SoR video better, I'm happy you covered my favorite Sega franchise of all time. I truly consider Shadow Dancer through Shinobi 3 to be the original Dark Souls games with their themes focused around boss encounters, and grand proportions. The Gunstar Heroes reference is perfect as it alludes to Alien Soldier, another insanely good title for the Sega. Thanks for another awesome video man.
The production value. I don't even have to look at the comments. I _know_ people are talking about it. Two suggestions for future content: 1: Consider simulating a CRT look for your game footage. The solid-pixel default look of emulated footage is fine when talking about games within the context of modern day experiences, but when the subject is strictly a history lesson, viewers like me are likely to prefer historical authenticity, even if it's strictly simulated. 2: 60fps. Maybe you think 30fps gives the video a higher production look, since it's close to cinema's 24fps, but it really wreaks havoc on video game footage. A better framerate always carries the bonus of making a video look slicker, even if viewers aren't necessarily able to pinpoint why. Just look at Kurzgesagt. They know.
I left you a comment on SOR2 a year ago and I'm gonna say it again. Your content just BLOWs AWAY other videos here to shame. You go far and beyond. The presentation, your research you have put all into this is simply amazing. If I had my own TV station network I would hire you in a heart beat. You deserve more than 58K

Two suggestions for future content:
1: Consider simulating a CRT look for your game footage.
Third!
Hooray, strafefox returns.
Easily the most consistent channel on UA-cam
Very high production value. Been binging your uploads for the last couple days.
Awesome video on a madly interesting subject. As a SEGA Genesis fan, those are the kinds of videos I really love, but sadly most of youtube is Nintendo fans doing countless of the same videos about Nintendo. So this is not only highly polished content, but refreshing.
Just found the channel and I'm VERY happy I did! Excellent video! Subscribed!
This message is not for Strafefox but for his fans :

You did both my favorite genesis/mega drive games in one video and I learned a lot, definitely subbed. This video almost brought a tear to my eye just seeing how much effort they put into this games And the quality you put in this video was the cherry on top

As a 41 year old gamer who lived through this era, your video and research on these games is absolute gold! Incredible stuff! I subscribed and look forward to more in the future. Thanks again.
Always amazed by the quality of your videos.
