- When you're learning to kitesurf, you're so pumped to get out on the water that you dont really think about all the knowledge you need to pick up to get to the point where you are totally independent or self sufficient. In lessons, most people only pay attention to the skills needed to get riding, and they ignore the safety skills and rigging skills. Today is an outline of what to pay attention to in lessons so that you're more equipped to ride independently when lessons are over.

i finally figured out how to body drag after 3 years of kiting. that's the hardest thing to learn😂
Good information Evan!
the bodydrag really is essential
so good you point this out 👍 many schools just don't prepare you enough for riding alone.
Especially body dragging is soooo important!
I spent 4 hours outside of Lisbon body dragging past a small break, doing some water starts, body dragging back in through the break and walking back up the beach.
It felt like drowning , I was so depressed and tired… but after that I was way more comfortable in waves, and I saw other riders with more experience than me that had not developed that comfort level.
Pain is learning in kiting :)
Awesome video. I did my lessons in Australia. We covered all these topics. But also did a total of around 6-7 hours of lessons over a few weeks. But there was one thing we didn't cover. And that's the give way rules on the water. That does change country to country and common sense should always prevail imo. But it's probably a topic that's worth knowing once you can ride on your own
The right of way rules are pretty standard everywhere, I just think certain people choose not to follow them. www.ikointl.com/blog/know-and-have-proper-kite-etiquette
Especially when it starts to get crowded it becomes more of a game of chicken
Great video Evan! 😁Yesterday was my first trip to the beach on my own without a lesson scheduled. Unfortunately the wind was not cooperating and wasn't even enough to do some kiting on land.😢
That’s part of learning to ride without an instructor. Look at the forecast and see what happened and you’ll be able to better read it next time!
Thanks for your videos. As a beginner I find them both instructional and inspirational. Just keep them coming🙌
Really appreciate these videos as I approach the sport as a beginner. 🙏🏼
Evan we miss you!
Thanks! I miss posting and kiting!
Been working on a project that’s just consumed all of my time and I’m trying to figure out how to keep posting. Have a video about to drop about a trip I took to Guadeloupe
subscribed. I like how you present your topics.
Thanks, any ideas for videos I should make?
@@erbartlett equipment maintenance, kite repair would be something I like to listen what people do. I'm also interested to know as an introvert (lol) how do you go about planning a trip to kite a foreign place
good video. as an instructor i fully agree!
Anything I missed? Or any topics you think would be good to cover?
@@erbartlett did you talk about self landing ? I usually teach students how to safely self land kite in case of emergency or if you are the last one kiting at the spot on water.
Great stuff! I recently started kitesurfing and I really want to explore more NY kitesrufing spots. How often do you go to GSB?
In the past i've been out there a few times a month, but lately life has caught up with me and i havent been in a couple months :(
@@erbartlett Got it. Are there any communities or discussions/threads among kitesurfers that I can join to stay informed about their plans? I'm looking to gather more information about the location and suitable takeoff points.
@filmtonyvalles I think there’s a northeast kitesurfing group on Facebook? There’s also a NYC what’s app group somewhere, need to see if I can find the website
@@erbartlett Thank you so much!
I'm very glad I changed my name in 09 ish when I seen there was 26 of us on Facebook. Subbed on name alone us evan bartletts have to stick together lol
