  • PHAD got called in for an Airbag Light on this 2012 Ford Explorer, code B1212.
    After getting that sorted, the shop owner also asked me to look at a low power complaint after a recent engine swap. Ends up being a pretty neat diagnosis :)

    Ford company gave a huge estimate, so many auto Electritions rejected saying the work will be completed, got it fixed myself just by removing and reconnecting the connector below parking brake. Thank you so much mahn

      @@Runco990 my 2011 chevys are still on their original drivetrains one malibu lt2 2.4 has 221k and the other traverse awd lt2 literally loaded with everything but towing and navigation 175k not even the dreaded timing chain issues, mobil 1/valvoline full synthetic all the way, synthetic dexron 6 atf in both every 30-60k too, honestly whenever we remember to do it we change it, maintain ur shit people 🤷🏻

    Lol, 1 turned out to no parts required, but 2nd one turned out to be major parts required ! I was kind of hoping it would be injector, spark plugs fault. Awesome diagnosis! 👌

    Great use of the pico! on air bag connectors i like to apply a little di electric grease when i have "terminal Fretting" I also don't have acess to deoxit at work, we have some castle product but not near as good as dexoit, i do have some at home when doing side work.

    Currently having this exact problem with the belt buckle pretensioners on both driver and passenger front seats, will have to loan a scanner and see how the ohms look, great video

    Ivan -- you done good tracking down the airbag harness resistance. But I'd encourage you to sometime investigate where that 0.7 ohms resides in your probe leads or plugs. And how consistent is it, and is it evenly divided between the two leads? Or is it really meter zero offset? Giving that a bit of study may save some goose chases in future! It's surprisingly difficult to measure resistance (or resistance differences) around an ohm with only two leads. Four lead measurement is so much better!

    On the misfire, what would I have done? The engine was replaced due to rod knock, I would have done a visual on the cats when putting the new engine in. Those Explorers have the cats built into the manifold and go bad quite often.

    It is always the connectors, just clean them and reconnect. Also, the securing pin at the actual connectors sometimes cause it go high in resistance, I have had so many cars like that, even in a corvette convertible.

    I must say you do very good job we need to get this channel to a million audiences!
    Ah I got a bmw it's a 2004 BMW 545i with smg transmission and I am getting a transmission fail safe PROGRAM activated.
    So the car wont go into gear as soon as it does it kicks it right out and do you have any idea what this could be ? Keep up the great work!

    I was able to repair a similar failure by just looking at the connector and I used ForScan the open source tool for fords

    THANKS IVAN,you just showed in the most to the point video .How important it is to have a plan and have a tool to test that plan.I think the regular JOE mechanic would have thrown in a fuel injector then maybe spark plug wires,then spark plugs.YOU KNOW it's the customers money anyways,LET'S LOAD THE PARTS CANON GUYS~~~oh ya might as well do an oil change ,fuel filter and air filter,maybe a CABIN FILTER just in case,haha.You just provided your friend with a super valuable lesson,my guess ,if he's smart he buy's a scanner like yours and ASK YOU FOR LESSONS>that is if he's smart!great job IVAN>

    And there you have it ladies and gentlemen: Never replace engines or transmissions in modern vehicles. More often than not you'll end up chasing problems like this. This owner made the mistake of keeping and fixing for thousands of dollars, only to find they have to spend thousands more fixing the cats. Rod knocking? Send it to the big car lot in the sky and get something else. Just remember to check and change your oil more often.

      If the owner is costing a new car versus repairing the old one, it will still work out cheaper, particularly if the rest of the car is in good condition. The expensive lesson most people fail to learn is that maintenance is important and shouldn’t be skipped and saves money in the long run.

    How did you check ohms without setting off pretensioners??? I would have disconnect pretensioner and put a resistor on the circuit. You are a brave man.

      Presumably the voltage/current from the meter is too low to trigger the igniter. But I'd be a bit nervous relying on that. At least with pretensioners an accidental firing is less likely to be dangerous than an airbag, but still expensive..

    Interesting, information. Years ago before there was computers on cars a car pulled into the dealership. Complaint was no power and right after a rain storm . Driving on the freeway . The shopforman listened to it and said the exhaust has collapsed . The rain hit the hot pipe and caused that problem. I lifted the car and he was right .

    I had a Saab brought to me and fuel trims were high and low on each bank, customer plugged in o2’s crossed and told me that they can’t be mixed up, yep they were 100%! Problem fixed

    Would you recommend the Thinktool for a guy that just works on his own cars?
    Also thanks so much for all the videos and the teaching. I’m definitely learning a lot. I followed your no parts needed approach today while fixing the furnace in my fifth wheel. I tested every sensor and narrowed it down to the control board. While testing I realized the relay for the fan clicked, but no power to the blower. I took the board out and found a bad solder joint. Fixed that and have heat again. Now I need a better soldiering tool. 🤣🤣

    Just received your pressure sensor kit. Thanks, Ivan! Using it to detect a blocked cat was a good demo.
    Regarding airbag-related stuff, it always makes me nervous being around those connectors because of the explosive nature of that sub-system. Could you at some point put a video together on the do's and do not around airbags?

      never use a ohm meter to measure the reistance of an air bag it could cause it to go off. How ill measure air bag circuits ill do it with the module unplugged and the air bag unplugged. Usually to verify circuit integrity i look at scan data to see resistance check and if one is high and i suspect air bag or a connector i will take a 2 ohm resistor that i got in my aeswave test lead kit and put it in place of the air bag and see what the scan tool says. if it shows in spec then i know i found the problem.

      @@kastooMcFry yes static can, just touch any metal surface in the car before touching anything else and you will be fine. also only use a butane soldering iorn when soldering those circuits. there is a chance the heating element in the electric ones could induce a current and trigger an air bag. (thats from GM) I'm a GM World Class Tech, Ivan is definatly on that level with out the certifications, he is a lot better at diag that me, but i'm always getting better, thanks to people like Ivan for making these videos. I also play with high voltage systems which is a lot more dangerous than an air bag, air bag circuits have shorting bars in connectors usually on the air bag side of the connectors to prevent accidental deployment.

      @@daveyio87 I hear you there. I'm an electronic engineer by trade so understand how static can totally hose your day up. I'm not a mechanic but help people that can't afford it repair their cars (vets, fixed income people, etc) - like a hobby more than anything, so work on a fair bit of cars.
      With electronics, static usually just zaps some silicon so there's no real danger - just annoyance.
      In the case of airbags, there's more at stake so that's where my question comes from: best practices, what to do and not do.
      Other dangerous stuff like high voltage, high power and RF I'm very comfortable with.
      Yes, Ivan is a great source of info, definitely. I'm getting an education every time I watch guys like him.

Flat rate sucks when you care about quality of repairs vs getting things done and moving on. We mechanics always make a ton of money doing side jobs than we do at work haha.

    Pretensioners and airbags use the same pyro devices. I use to work at a factory that makes them. Always use great care when working on these devices, They can be set off by a static charge! Pretensioners aren't quite as dangerous as airbags, but they are a one use device. If you accidentally set one off, there goes all your profit!

    I recall my first plugged catalytic converter. 40mph at bottom of short steep hill, floor it, under 15mph at the top with engine crying.
    that was with dinosaur style "bead" catalyst, pulled the plug, started engine blew it out all over the garage, 20+ years later and still finding beads from it to this day! :))

    With the supposedly "flooded" Russian platinum group metals mine, that cat will probably cost more than the transducer machine, maybe a lot more! Cats are being sawn off like crazy in California.

    Can't you use a temp gun and aim it at both sides of the catalytic converter and see a drastic difference in temperature on a clogged converter?

    Ivan I feel taking resistance reading on the RCM is like rolling the dice. Ford uses the 2.0 to 2.4 ohms spec on on all there inflation modules. I don’t think Ford or any manufacturer recommends the use of the ohm meter to measure the inflators for fear of setting them off with the ohm meters current. Put yourself together a 2ohm test resistor to replace the air bag for testing “

    Seemingly false misfire codes after an engine swap would have pointed me to a cam/crank relearn first (since I doubt it was completed). If issues were still present after that, I'd proceed with further diagnosis.

    On the clogged cat put a temp gun on both ends of the cat if its clogged the dump end will be way hotter like 100 or more degrees

    My 2002 ford explorer has the same symptoms: rich on bank 1 lean on bank 2. I was suspecting a blocked cat but since I am not getting misfires. I just keep driving. At least Iam in Fl where cats won't cost you an arm or a leg.

    i would think the low resistance values in the first car would need a special connector and thick wires to give the most accurate reading.
    I can't see how they get away with rubbish connectors/wire.
    A constipated engine lol.
    That's a new one to me, maybe it needs something pushed up it's tail pipe lol.

    sadly ive dealt with enough cat issues on mytruck i could tell that was the low power problem from the start, you could hear the cats screaming, bet they were glowing when the light started blinking

    Are you sure it was the connection? You just moving it and it changed. Maybe a wire has rubbed through and moving it that little bit ungrounded it? My guess is from you just moving it. We will see what you find out by the end of the video.

    If it happened after an engine swap, time to search for unplugged connectors, poor grounds or bent pins...but where, hmmmmmm...
    Sometimes we get information like, “since the engine swap,” but it really was happening before. Paul Harvey needs to get involved.

    Store this car until the state calls it a classic, then remove the catalytic converter. Straight pipes perform far better, and they don't clog.

    The old Eric o drill a hole and put a gauge in the pipe. Or Ivan’s way and look at the o2 sensors is a bit easier. Needs cats. Ur 100% correct

    If this is a 4.0 OHC engine, cam crank correlation and then pull it for chains, guides and tensioners. Worst consumer engine in 50 years.

      There hasn’t been a good engine in a Ford vehicle since the 70s. Mechanics have bought 6 figure homes because of them. Ford has had more lawsuits for the engines in their vehicles than the amount of VW vehicles getting new emission equipment put on. Every EcoBomb, every PowerJoke, every Triton, every SOHC (minus the 4.6), every Duratech, every zeetec .... not one is known for longevity. Look at this Explorer,, not even 10 years old and it needed a new engine. FoMoCo is trash. Best selling, does not mean it’s the best. McDonalds sells the most burgers by that logic.

      @@bolt_husky There has been some very good Ford engines in recent. 3.0l Vulcan is bulletproof, 5.4l sohc, 2.0l Duratech in the early 2000's cars, 4.6l sohc (like you mentioned), 2v v10. Old 70's and before were worn out at 100k. I agree Ford is trying to do to much as far as engineering, and stumbles.
      3.5l 3.7l in these are actually decent engines. They make great power and are decent on fuel. They do have some design stupidity such as internal water pump. I have seen them still running strong with 20k + hours on them.

      @@bolt_husky The 4.6 and 5.4L sohc engines are the longest lasting gas engines ford has ever produced. google million mile van.

    Ivan I am also a diag tech I’m curious you don’t worry about damaging the tension on the connector pins when u probe them like that with your ohm meter? I always thought it was not good to stick backprobes in the front?

      Good question. Fine needle probes are usually ok for this test 👍

    Just started watching the bonus footage for low power. My guess is a partially clogged up CAT on the one bank. Put some Hair Ball Medicine in the gas tank and She will be good to go!!!! 😄😄😄😄 😺😺😺😺

    The original engine that failed caused the cat to die. Now to give the price on a converter to the customer, ouch.
