  • This 2007 Ford F150 came from the auction with a severe LOW POWER complaint, and occasional TERRIBLE engine sounds.
Sure enough, P0012 and P0022 timing codes are stored.
Looks like a closed case: needs new timing PHASERS, right?
This is a perfect example of where the PARTS CANNON can get you in trouble very quickly!!
Let's start from scratch, gather some data on a test drive, and see what the root cause of the problem is.

Ivan, great diagnostics! There may be more going on there with the timing, but the low engine RPM could be simulating a problem that may or may not be there. You proved a problem that needs to be fixed before any other proper troubleshooting can be done. Thanks for the great case study!!

I disagree. You cannot tell people how to maintain their vehicles. That's why a vehicle manual is there to help. All they want to do is drive and complain and bitch when their vehicles act up. Now you tell them. Your cats are plugged up. How much is is going to cost??
      O that's to much.
      Can I drive it ??
      I tell them no
Well the code says a new o2 sensor is what I was told?
I tell them. It's your choice. If you want to buy and install a 02 sensor. That's your choice.

Ivan, here's a fun one for you - buddy of mine has a 2019 Cadillac XT4. The dealer did some work to it, and left a ground loose, resulting in a no comm, crank no start condition. The electricks in the car make it spin and spin and spin, and all the while, it's injecting fuel. Naturally, while the dealer was diagnosing, they'd just hit the button and let it crank till it timed out.
This alone was enough to burn down the converter in it. He had the car back for a few weeks, and boom, got a P0420.

DIY oil changes? May I make a suggestion with some four plus decades of intense DIY under my belt... Look into vacuum extraction as the process for oil changes. You'll have to research or carefully experiment if the vacuum tube will get to the bottom of your oil pan. But, once that hurdle is crossed, vacuum extraction is the way to go. Keep the oil changed a couple of times a year and stretch out the oil filter change interval to every three years...
I love the process for its simplicity so much, I removed the oil pan of my 1993 C1500 pickup truck and modified the internal slosh baffles in addition to welding in some blocking plates so the vacuum tube would never get hung up.
Now, I no longer have to jack up any of the family's vehicles to perform a simple oil change. The process only takes 20 minutes tops. And every other Summer or so the vehicles are up on jack stands for other maintenance and that's when I swap the oil filters for new ones.

In ancient times, many places carried a simple manual brass bilge pump that could also doubled as a way to drain old oil via a thin tube put down the dipstick on inboard boat motors. Or from your car and pickup for that matter. A pair of thick gloves were a also good idea if pumping out hot oil was your thing. As time went on "anti pollution" measures were taken which seemed purposely designed to defeat this procedure.

@@russellstephan6844 Hey, I appreciate your comment quite a bit actually! I have a 2006 Accord, manual, 2 door, 155k miles I recently bought out of necessity for daily commute.. and I love it, more than the 2017 camry I owned. Just something about the way it drives and the older style of things still persisting in the vehicle.
Anyway! My first oil change, the filter was extremely tough to get at. I was forced to go in through the passenger wheel well and couldn't see the mating surface of the engine once removed. Next time I'll try jacking a bit higher with wood, or some other tricks I've seen online. But yes, pump suction for oil changes is right up there on my list of research! Thank you.

More than welcome! Keep on the DIY thing, for sure. Over my lifetime, I'm confident I will have saved over a quarter of a million dollars in automotive expenses due to DIY. Not only can I perform nearly *any* professional shop task, I don't have to buy new cars. Used cars are cheap and don't need loans to obtain (savings on interest payments). And since there's no loan and the car is effectively disposable, I don't have to carry collision insurance (more savings). No one wants to steal my rides, either.
My profession was high-end IT. I did work at a service station pumping gas back in the day, but most of my fix-it skills have been through self-education and the school of practical hands-on fix-it-by-Monday-or-you're-going-to-need-a-ride-to-work deadline.
Good luck on this journey. It will have its moments of high frustration. But, as with any valuable skill, stick with it and work through the difficulties.

Those phasers have trouble at cold all the time. If he used a misfire scope, would have seen no issue. Cat input and output was the storyline. Could have measured cat temperature and notice temp difference too. A misfire for an extended period of time will destroy a cat with unburied fuel- been there

Great video Ivan as usual. I'm a little confused was the plug cat causing the over retarded and over advanced codes or are those separate codes that need to be looked at after the fix of the cat and if the cat is causing that why did it cause those camshaft codes

    • @turboimport95
      @turboimport95 2 роки тому +1

most likely since the cat was clogged, that slowed engine rpm making it sluggish, ecu detected high throttle and load but low rpm, so it was advancing or retarding timing trying to make the engine breath, It maxed out the degrees it could turn and "thought" it needed more so it figured the phasers were not moving enough. So it threw the cam codes...
