Viswanath, even more than Gavaskar, was the Indian batsman of that generation that I most enjoyed watching. He was so elegant, so wristy and such a wonderful timer of a cricket ball.
Viswanath was the captain in 2 tests Drew against Pakistan in Calcatta. But lost the golden jubilee test against England in Bombay..here as the acting captain without Sunil Gavaskar drew this test played in England..A proud consolation. His 75 not out was the reason the test was drawn on the last day..Great GRV..
Whenever runs were badly needed from the middle order in an Indian Test match innings in 70's and the early 80's, GR Vishwanath was always available for that particularly situationally demanding job.
Two away series in early eighties - one against Australia and the other against England - saw the rise of Sandeep Patil as a fast scoring middle order bat. And this helped India win couple of crucial matches in the 1983 World Cup. But very soon he faded away..
Kapildev was in great form in the series with ball and bat. If Kapildev had been more circumspect with the bat, he would have scored three centuries in the series instead of three scores of 80 plus and 90 plus. Nevertheless, we was adjusted man of the series ahead of Ian Botham in this test series.
The press made gavaskar overshadow Vishwanath technically Vishwanath was much higher in class then Sunil more than this Vishwanath was a perfect gentleman
Look at the mindset of batting: to save yourself from bouncer!!! Not hooking!! This shows what Viru, Dada and MS had contributed to india! Still, they have helmets!!!! GRV & Sunil are lone fighters most of the time!!! Some time shastri, vengserker also controls. But mindset was defensive!!! Thanks to Dada, he gave chance to Viru to open the innings & it was changed!!! Love you, Dada!!!
So much similarity in batting styles of Jaisimha, Gundappa Vishwanath, Mohammed Azharuddin , vvs laxman. All from Hyderabad , all smooth stylish attractive to watch even if they get out at 30 runs. Batsmen like vishwanath played for entertaining audiences unlike shastri , vengsarkar, mohinder amarnath who were also fine players but could make the audiences yawn and bored. In England David gower was the only batsman worth paying to watch , rest were just dour accumulator of runs or butchers of bowling attack like gooch lamb boycott barrington.
Vishwanath is not from hyderabad.. He is from karnataka.. Vengsarkar is not boring batsman who made people yawn.. He's stylish batsman in 80's...actually his career took over from 80's precisely from late 70's...people at that time say Vengsarkar plays as elegantly as vishwanath albiet with more power.. Mohinder Amarnath is technically very good like Vengsarkar and more courageous than both Vishy and Vengi.. Viswanath is artist there's no doubt about it... For people who wanted to watch wristy game it's like God sent Azhar and laxman... Laxman career took over after azhar's career is over.. I'm contradicting with your statement Vengsarkar, Amarnath are boring.. Vishy was good at flicks and square cut..Vengsarkar was good at pulls, drives and cuts.. Amarnath hooked and pulled fearlessly but in the process he was hit on head many times, Imran khan knocked him unconscious, Michael holding broke his teeth, Richard hadlee caused him hairline fracture on his skull but Jimmy never hesitated in hooking and pulling.. Ravi sastry in my opinion is utility cricketer but very selfish and boring.. My request don't put amarnath and vengsarkar in that category.. Vengsarkar is very stylish and elegant player
@@venuturupallimurthy Vengsarkar was stylish but his first 50 runs came at an extremely slow pace . He accelerated after crossing 50 ( in tests). Barring his amazing trot of form between 1986 to 1988 he looked less attractive. Amarnath was not attractive to watch at all . Yes he was courageous against fast bowling but couldnt play swing and spin expertly. Even if we consider him as a courageous batsman , that display was only in two series 1982 83 series against pakistan and westindies after which he was hailed as the best player of fast bowling. But absolutely unattractive to watch. Almost like Geoff boycott or Graham Gooch.
This was one of his best performances. Overall Vishwanath like Gavaskar and Shastri was a slow player . Not fit for one days and by international test standards he was just mediocre . Nepotism allowed these players to survive without performance for years together . Today players of this calibre won’t make it to Ranji level . But time time ki baat hai .
Kapil the great alrounder of all time, in india 434 wickets equivalent to 600 wickets in abroad, no compare with others, like botham, imran,Hadley. All are failed in india , most tracks are spinning ,nothing for Pacers, not justify the kapil talent.now bumraha is sacrificing for such wickets.
Botham, Hadlee, Imran... all far far far better bowlers than Kapil. Regardless of your theories about pitches. This must also be part of the Indian patriotism drill - exaggerating the abilities of the cricketers.
As a bowler Kapil was overrated, On occasion he is better bowler then Botham, No comparison between Hadlee and Imran, 1988 against India in Indian pitches Hadlee at the age of 35/36 took 18 wicket out of 40 wicket, and Kapil at the age of 28/29 took 10 wicket out of 60 wicket won a test match taking 10 wicket, Imran also bowl on same kind of pitches but with speed and moving the New and old ball in air make pitch out of equation. After mid eighties I suspect as a bowler Kapil can enter as a pure bowler in any international team other than India, even Srilankan pace bowler of that time were sharper than Kapil on that respect Kapil was lucky he played for India.

Surprising to see this is a channel 9 Australia production
I watched these highlights on the BBC in England when I was a kid.
No it's not... Richie Benaud also was an active commentator in the BBC in the English summers. You're correct about the highlights though.

The emergence of azhar hindered his journey

SquareCut Master. Vishwanath
Vishy the best always!!!
Undoubtedly
He is really మ్యాచ్ winner
The press made gavaskar overshadow Vishwanath technically Vishwanath was much higher in class then Sunil more than this Vishwanath was a perfect gentleman
Vishwanath played many good innings in the middle order.
True Vishy was a man of crisis he helped India many times in difficult times.
Dillip is excellent on drive player I like his batting

Jimmy Amarath was a fearless hooker....I rate him the best against any attack....but temperament plays
Old is gold
Sublime Vishy

GRV is from Karnataka
Viswanath from Karnataka
Vishwanath is from Karnataka
Really vishi is match winner
Correct. In those days vishy & ചന്ദ്ര were match winners. Vishy with bat and chandra with ball.
महान विश्वनाथ का भारत की क्रिकेट को ऊँचाई तक पहुँचाने में बहुत बड़ा योगदान था लेकिन उन्हें वह यश नहीं मिला जिसके वे अधिकारी थे।

As if other bowlers are good for nothing they are also very great bowlers
Botham, Hadlee, Imran... all far far far better bowlers than Kapil. Regardless of your theories about pitches. This must also be part of the Indian patriotism drill - exaggerating the abilities of the cricketers.
Compare kapil's bowling in SENA countries with others... That's a fair comparision.
