I had an SL1700 Mk II. These prices are absurd. Mine cost about 1/25th of these prices.
Precisely.
I have an old Technics SL7 from 1981 and its a lovely thing to own
Still have one. Really works!
I've never owned a Technics table but they are great functioning works of art.
Johnny, when you do get one, and you will, remember to treat it gingerly and it will reward you with many, many years of great playback…. Both of my original 1210s from 1987 perform amazingly now, from the day I first turned them on.🌹✨
-scott
I bet they are featured at some museum at this point.
@@SkyFiAudio eau contraire! they’re here at home with me.🌹 (I wish I could take them with, when checking out time comes! lol!😂)
A friend of mine had one of these back in the day. An object of fascination due to the high technical excellence and Oh Man! What an amazing sound rendition! A true HiFi turntable and how I did covet this thing!
I can still remember the giddiness of my Marine Corps buddy back in 79' when he showed us his brand new SL 1200 MK2 turntables and mixer board. Forty five years into our passion and too much money in Gear and records to count later, is nice to reminisce about our humble beginning. Who would have thunk that we could go from hardcore dance club Disco/RB/Funk to somber yet highly complex Jazz. Well, now that I think about it, the same way that some other of our buddies have gone from Hard Classic Rock from the 70's into Classical. It's called becoming matured highly critical audiophiles.
I personally love the slider, only because with different records and different genres of music I like to vary the speed. I know it's not to everyone's taste, a lot of people are of the opinion that it has to be 33.3, but if I'm listening to fast heavy metal music I like to kind of raise the speed just a bit, it makes it even more heavy metal. If I'm listening to slow jazz or more melodic music, I like to just back it off just a hair, it really adds to it.
With some songs you just want to get it over with, and for that the slider is helpful.
@@declanfarber😂 True
Thank you Fernando to share all these gears with us.
My pleasure!
Sticker shock ! My SL-1700MKII was bought new in 1981 for $200 which I still have .And is essentially a 1200 but with a floating platter and arm more a like a Thorens.
I think your SL1700 is more like a SL1300 or SL1200 MK7 today so technically in the ballpark.
I have a Technics SL-1210GAE, which will probably be my end-turntable unless I get crazy and go for the SL-1000. I applaud Technics for adding a new model (and quite a capable one at that!) that addresses the very vocal objection to the Pitch Controls on the 1200-series. However, for me, the slider, strobe and pitch dots on the platter are absolutely iconic...it's an aesthetic that's been memorialized in so many ways in our modern culture. Seeing an SL-series 'table without the controls makes the top-deck look naked IMO.
A turn of a friendly card sitting on the turntable. Classic album.
ahh good eye, thats a good one indeed.
The wood plinth adds the final touch!!
Thanks John. The plinths are selling nicely. New model with the Technics logo coming out next month for those that want the extra bling.
As you'd previously anticipated - removing the pitch control removed the platter strobe and the stylus illuminator. As a 1200G owner and a prior (long ago) DJ, I see no purpose for the pitch control on the 1200G or 1200GR, especially the ability to double the pitch change ability.... that being said the stylus illuminator is a must have, and the platter strobe is very nice too.... Maybe a potential 1400G will be the winning recipe ;)
stylus illuminator can be simulated with this nifty thing called a flash light. jk
Totally forgot to mention that. Definitely gonna miss that on the 1300G.
Or just the existing 1200G?😂
@@andrewlittleboy8532 1400G -the version with tone arm lift and auto stop. For those nights after one too many drinks.
I have been an audiophile since the 70's when there wasn't much to choose from. I remember Technics had a reputation for being cheap mass-market junk. I am still having a hard time taking them seriously until I can actually demo a few models. I know the same thing for Boulder amplifiers and now they are one of the best American made units.
I bet if you interact with a 1200G you will appreciate what a premium feel it has. To me it feels like a bargain.
@@SkyFiAudioContinum Caliburn or Clearaudio Statement cost more 150,000 dolars ,Technics 1000 R refrence 20000 dolars, 5 time less but quality egal!!!
I have the original SL-1300. Odd how Technics reused the model name. Mine still works 40 years - when records are VG.
Right, their entire naming convention is odd. On the other current models the black versions get a 1210 designation, looks like they are going away from that. I guess in a decade when all the models are refreshed it will be consistent.
@@SkyFiAudio It will confuse the resell market. Maybe I'll post my SL-1300 (circa -75 - 78) as a model variant. (LOL).
Bought a pair of techniques 1200 in1984 guess what they're still running
I own an original 1200 Mark II purchased in 1979. It has a Grace Ruby cartridge and stylus mounted on it. It sounds great for a 45 year old turntable.
I am planning to pull the trigger early next year. As interesting as I find this turntable, I will likely go with the SL-1200G-K with a low-output MC stylus.
That would be my first choice but if the budget doest reach the SL1300 is a great alternative.
@@SkyFiAudio Agreed
Love this! Thanks! Any chance of a 'shoot-out' video between maybe a vintage Garrard and the 1200g? ~peace
Great suggestion!
Finally a Technics turntable for those that can’t beat match 😂
lol, perfect for those of us without rhythm :-)
I have an original SP-10 Mk2, with EPA A250 tonearm and matching EPA B500 on the fly armbase, in a Panzerholtz plinth, Ortofon Cadenza Black moving coil cartridge, re-tipped with Fritz Gyger S stylus profile (same as the Ortofon Replicant stylus profile) and it is a joy, sonically and aesthetically - end game tt for me.
I have an SL-1210 GR, and I love it. The specs are very similar to the very pricier SL-1200 G/SL-1210 G, so if the same cartridge is used on both of them, I don't think that I would notice any difference in sound quality. The real question is: How much better is the sound quality on this one compared to similar record players? But to be honest, nothing can beat high-quality digital sound with a good D/A converter. Almost all vinyl records since 1990 were produced on digital mastering, so it is pointless to convert them to vinyl recordings. The only reason why I own a record player is because of nostalgy, not because of extremely high sound quality.
Looks amazing!
The custom base is awesome and a great idea!
Hey thanks. Small quantities available on our website.
Waiting patiently for technics to release the delta sigma feature in the 1200g before buying
and hopefully an outboard power supply like the SL1000. That would rock.
The pitch slider is one thing, but why people would want the cueing light & strobe removed is beyond me.. You're really doing yourself a disservice there. 😐
I agree with you. Gonna really miss the light and strobe.
Ain;t I lucky to have an SL-15 3-speed turntable with a Sumiko Studio tone arm, bought in 1992. I did get that runaway problem fixed once it popped up!
These prices are totally insane. I'll keep my SL-D2 since it still plays great!
Would make a great transcription deck
When I've been DJing i've used 1210MK2 a lot and what I understand they are easy to repair. How is it with the never ones, are they "easy" to reapair?
That looks great but im happy with my 70s SL 3300 played through my spendor bc1s doesn't get any better for me
Looks like a great table. Thanks
You bet
Technics did listen, they gave you the best of both worlds here, the new Delta Sigma drive and the new platter without the slider. This will fly off shelves for the reduced price of the G. Have you seen Denon’s new DP-3000ne yet? It is a lot of table for the money with s similar pulse wave modulation motor. The feet are similar to what is on the top end VPI turntables.
I have the SL100C with AT vm95ml stylus which sounds amazing. enjoy.
Nice combo, I bet it sounds great. Thanks for sharing.
Delete the strobe and pitch control? Never! I grew up using Dad's Technics DD turntable and grabbed a 1200GAE when Technics returned to the business. I wouldn't have it any other way. I've been enjoying an AT ART9 on mine and can't imagine ever going back to a MM. Is there a belt drive made at any price with lower wow & flutter or rumble?
Such a divisive subject. Good thing now you can have it either way.
These turntables are made in Malaysia now :(
The factory in Malaysia is far superior to the one they had in Japan. Not sure I care what the nationality of the workers are. I care about t process, tooling and quality standards which are top notch. Hope to get a tour some day so I can share.
Are these Universal Line Voltage? Use anywhere in the world? Or at least can be used in 230VAC countries?
nice table. Once released a guess would be technics won't be able to keep up with demand.
Very true! I suspect we got our orders in ahead of most if not all dealers so we should get some nice quantities. Not a lot but better than most.
I suspect they are catching up with demand considering how many options are now available in the Technics lineup
I’m waiting for the diamond encrusted edition😂😂😂
I read this one has the aluminium tonearm tube from the GR2, but does it also have the tonearm lift mechanism of the GR/GR2 inside or the one of the 1200G?
No idea but I will be cracking it open on my video next week to see what's in it, stay tuned.
@@SkyFiAudio Nice! I'm looking forward to that video!
nice if you can afford one...
Technics is finally moving in the right direction w/ the 1300G. Too bad it doesn't come in other finishes. Would love to see it in Brushed Champagne or gloss black w/ anodized brass tone arm in a walnut plinth!
Glad you like it. Perhaps we will see some limited editions as they have done many times in the past.
@@SkyFiAudio I'll be waiting! My 1210 GR will do for now.
need to bring back a linear tracking line of tables
My SL-Q5 from 1984 blows it out of the water. No skate force constantly pushing the stylus off center, no tracking angle errors. What are they doing? Build a new linear tracker.
Presumably you’ve heard this then and made a comparison. How did they sound different?
Why exactly is the cabinet a substantial downgrade from the G and how apparent performance/sonic wise will this downgrade be?
The 4 layer plinth on the G is machined and anodized aluminum 10 mil thick plus, die cast alumninum plus BMC plus rubber. The GR2 and 1300G are two layers and half the weight. Differences will be measurable at high volumes or high vibration.
@@SkyFiAudio What if you're listening through a nice headphone amp? What are the differences between the G and the GR2/1300G?
@@rudeboyjohn Is your neighbor running a jackhammer, or a dancing elephant?

10 mil thick? LOL, I surely hope not.
How about a ALL silver design
not sure I follow.
@@SkyFiAudio base of tt as well
RIP Wallet 😂 do you guys know if this one is manufactured In Japan? Would be really cool to have a Japanese manufactured Technics TT
It is not but the factory is far superior to the one they had in Japan so Im not sure it matters.
@@SkyFiAudio Really? What have they changed?
I thought they basically made a copy of the factory in Japan, but larger to meet increased demand.
Well, seems like an upgraded 1200G must be in the works no??
who knows, they dont share anything. I find out the same day as everyone else. lol.
I wish they upgraded the 1200G without the slider controls.
It sort of works well if you were wanting to play 78s, given 78rpm wasn’t really a set standard.
Had to look that word up *"#turntable" does it do rap😊
Getting there…a wood veneer plinth and this thing will sell like mad. I’m in the camp that deleting the slider is good but I’ve got to admit it now looks a little plain. A wood (or wood look) plinth will add the visual interest, and push all the buttons for those who want this to look as well as play beautifully.
A pitch slider is totally useless to 99.9% of the folks who'd want to purchase these Technics 'tables.
Yes we are so used to seeing the slider and strobe that it looks a bit plain now. At least the brass on the platter is showing making it look more premium. As soon as I get one I will post pics of it with the new wood plinth we sell. Thanks for commenting sir.
@@dizzle1119I wonder how many others play 78s on them. Pitch slider is important in that case.
@@SkyFiAudio Too bad the the brass won't be showing once the old rubber mat goes on top lol
@@Thunderbird139 I'm sure there are some folks who'd want to play 78s on their Technics 'table, but it can't be a large enough percentage of buyers to make 78rpm playback with a pitch slider standard equipment. Surely removing those things would lower production costs a little and make the 'tables more attainable for the average Joe. Just a guess, there, but I've got to believe Technics would sell more turntables if there were cheaper options available. Heck, I would have probably bought an entry level Technics myself, when I first got into HiFi, if there had been a model that costs a couple hundred bucks less. When I got my first 'table, I didn't even know if I was going to care about vinyl. It would have been really dumb to purchase a $1,000+ component if you don't even know if you're going to use it. Turns out I got addicted to vinyl because of a Fluance RT85 w/ an Ortofon 2M Bronze cartridge & a Pro-Ject Tube Box S2 phono preamp.
My current turntable is the Music Hall Stealth, and it's made in the same factory as a lot of Technics 'tables (at least that's the rumor...and it seems pretty true when ya look at the Stealth's overall build quality, materials & tonearm setup). The Stealth has 78rpm playback minus the pitch slider, too...which is the only reason I'm mentioning it. ...but I don't know how well the Stealth does 78rpm playback as I don't own a single 78rpm record. I'll probably never own one.
Also, I'm not saying Technics shouldn't make ANY turntables with a pitch slider. The slider is there for a reason and if you need it, you need it. It simply is what it is. ...but the overwhelming majority of modern HiFi enthusiasts don't need a pitch slider and will never use it.
D you use Chopsteeks?
Of course when people say things like 'overpriced', or they only cost x amount back in the 90's the minimum wage has significantly increased since then. Back in 1999 it was only £3 per hour but it's now almost £12 so you have to expect some price increases unfortunately.
No you don’t.
@@declanfarberwell of course we'd all like the income of today but the prices of 30 years ago but the economy doesn’t work that way. If it did we could all buy a house on a year' wages!
A good cartridge is an another 1600$ USD to you 😅😅 I don't know much about them yet I'm new to all this but I was thinking you can get a decent cartridge for under $200. But I guess it's what your definition of "good" is. As an Audi expert your definition of good probably has very high standards as $1600 is required to buy a "good" Cartridge to you.. I just purchased a SL-1200-mk5 and it has a Technics 270C Cartridge on it. What would be something decent I could get around $200 thats better to replace it? I won't be spending over a grand on one as of right now but it's certainly not off the table in the future haha
Were Technics able to improve on the often criticized tone arm lifter often referred to as "wonky" (others words not mine, but I have a SL 100-C and the tone arm lifter is the one weak link on the TT) on this latest product as well as others in the higher echelon of the Technics brand.
Not sure yet, stay tuned for the review next week.
Is there any difference between the top plate of the 1300G-S and the silver 1500C? Are they both painted cast aluminium?
not quite sure, I will know once I receive the review sample in a few weeks, will take it apart and report back.
What kind of phono stage do you like to pair up with these technics tables?
Check the listing on our website, we offer a few suggestions.
brass platter?
Same as the .'G'. Brass top platter on top of the aluminium.
The SL-1200 G has the better tonearm .
Spot on.
Yes, it's made of a magnesium alloy, which brings superior anti resonance qualities, along with added rigidity you don't get from a tube of aluminium, but hey, they look the same.
Looks great, but I wish it had auto lift/shut off.
We've got you covered with the new Little F'wend lifter made specifically for the SL1200. I would not want anything internal interfering with the arm. Thats what the SL1500 is for.
@@SkyFiAudio Thanks. I'll think about that. Turntables like the Kenwood KP1100 and Denon DP72 just used an optical sensor and soft solenoid to lift the arm at the end of the record. It was a good design and didn't affect the arm in any mechanical way.
I do as well. I cannot tolerate a manual turntable, having to babysit it for the record's end. clunk ... clunk ...
Nice vídeo 👏
Thanks Francisco, stay in touch.
Looks terrific. Good explanation.
Glad you liked it! Thanks for writing Mitch.
A 1300 dollar table is not entry level!
And I was just thinking one would be better off just spending the extra grand or so to get the 1200G.
Technics entry level
If i had the money i would go for that one. @@andrewlittleboy8532
@@Matasky2010i get it but people that buy tables like these are probably not beginners when it comes to spinning records....so the term just doesn't feel right
Maybe it’s not US Dollars !!...lol
Can the torque be modified like the 1200g?
yes I believe there are two torque settings via buttons under the platter.
How is the VTA adjustment, same as GR2?
Yes sir. thats my understanding but I will confirm next week when I get one.
Not sure I understand. Is this a 1200G without the strobe and pitch control or does it have the GR2's plinth?
Forget it, got the answer. I was waiting for a 1200G without the DJ look. To bad.
hopefully that one will be next. Perhaps add the external power supply too. Cheers.
If they would only release a fully automatic turntable in that series! Peace.
It's generally pretty difficult to fully automate a tonearm without affecting its performance, I dont think it will happen. Cheers.
@@SkyFiAudio Not really, it just requires a servo that disengages when playback starts, however, it introduces a lot of mechanical wear points that make it less reliable once it starts to age, and much harder to repair because of all the proprietary components that would be required (eg. Sony Biotracer).
i tried 3 different 1500 $ cables for my 1210g and could not get rid of a low hum. the stock cables that came with the table were dead silent . i gave up trying and just went with what worked
The cables for a turntable are very specific with regards to how the are made and grounded. The Kimber we offer in the purchase menu works super well as so do many others.
@@SkyFiAudio i tried kimber, nordest , and a few others . all had hum , stock cables did not , i spent hrs trying to chase it . gave up. i am happy with my sound, i have a parasound JC3 + ,
Hah! I had the same issue when I "upgraded" to AudioQuest cables.
So called "audiophile" RCA cables are a joke!
Eventually I decided to make my own cables using Mogami 2964 wire.
It's what top class recording/mastering studios use, so that good quality stuff, but significantly less expensive than the audiophile voodoo cables!
Dead silent, low capacitance, good shielding.
I've put an SME V tonearm on my 1200G later on, so now I'm using the Van Den Hul cable that came with the tonearm... but the Mogami cable is still being used on my secondary deck (a 1200M7L).
Technics, SONY, Pioneer, Toshiba, Sansui, Akai, Marantz??? The only staff you can purchase from American stores (Best Buy and PC Richard's) is a cheep Chinese made junk at very affordable $50 price range. Sad true...
Ughhh...the 1300 aesthetic around the GR2 price point would be the perfect deck for me. I'm not spending an extra $1000 for these upgrades that I really don't need. I'd be happy with a silver 100C but for some reason they don't make one.
The motor and plater are well worth the extra $$ in my opinion.
It is absolutely crazy for anyone to spend thousands of dollars on a turntable!!!! Geeeez A used 80's technics is the best route
I purchased a 1998 Technics sl 1200 MK5 for $450 in 2016 and it has been 100 percent trouble-free with probably somewhere around 10,000 hours on it. Has the octagon shaped leads... Round ones from that year had a capacitance problem.
Ok.
I have an SP-10D that I bought for $200. I'd never spend this kind of money on a turntable. It just is diminishing returns.
I have had 2 since the 1980s and they are still going strong. the 1200s and the 1210s , You can still buy them today in 2024. Why would Technics release this without a pitch control, I ask myself. And it is definitely not a deejay it as well as overpriced. IMHO.
Folks have been asking for a table without pitch control for a long time. They are just following the market demand.
@@SkyFiAudio strange that as I overlook the fact that I have 2 decks and if I am not beat mixing, I do not touch the pitch control
By having it there is the added bonus and an option.
Personally, Technics should have included it.
The plinth is identical
What’s inside could easily have been modified to include the strobe and pitch control.
From a marketing point it is a seller but of course, Technics are be all and end all in their market. Another on my confirmed opinions!
Great video you created nevertheless.
Thanks
These prices are absurd
Technics are taking the necessary steps to ensure that nobody ever dj's on vinyl ever again at these prices.
What do you mean? They still make the MK7 just for DJs.
Better than the GR2 ?
for sure, better platter and motor.
Yes, it is better, motor , platter , slightly better materials found in the feet , and it weighs in at almost 13 kg = just under 26LB . But I'd rather have a GR2 more fun to be had .
Wonderful, but too rich for my blood. I did have a Technics TT back in the early 80s, but I bet it didn't cost one-tenth of this
most things in the 80s cost you 1/10 :-)
No thanks. I won't have a table without a pitch control. There are too many superb records that were mastered slightly off-pitch. While I don't require the extreme pitch range of the SL-1200-series slider, I find that listening to a slightly off-pitch performance is irritating.
So glad they offer both now :-).
Can you provide arguments for how this turntable is better than Audio-Technica from a mechanical perspective? Same direct drive motor, same tonarm. Why should I pay thousands of $$ more?
Not the same motor or arm just looks like it is! Technics is original AT is copy. Not saying AT is bad but Technics is better,
The exact same dd motor? Really? The exact same? Tell you what... DON'T pay thousands of $ more. K?
Im sorry to be the bearer of bad news , but you can't be serious? The Audio-technica turntables are made by HANPIN in China , nothing wrong with that , but in terms of materials used, far superior in technics, the build quality far superior in technics, all you need to do is remove the platter from the Audio-technica, do the same with the technics and hit it , see how long the AT rings , this list is not exhaustive, but on the bright side of things Audio-technica manufacture some really excellent cartridges and headshells, and headshell leads .
@peterstudley1804 Wait, are we talking about playing LPs or looking at turntables? Only important aspects affecting playback. Like W&F, skating compensation, etc. Please be serious. Price difference should explain superiority in playing LPs. And in this case it should be multiple times better in doing that. For example, I can understand when there is a premium charge for a more complex tonearm.
Johnson Linda White Betty Hernandez Sandra
Technics stuff is so nice, but a lot of the extra doohickeys they put on their tables are things I would literally never touch and don't want to pay for.
Also, it's kinda "dumb" (at least in my opinion) when your $1,200 product and your $4,000 product look almost 1:1 identical....for years on end.
There's no excuse for it. It's the same thing as JL Audio selling their 13" W7 series subwoofers for $1,500 a pop when they're literally 25 or 30 year old tech at this point.
I agree to some degree but when you get up close to the SL1200G it looks and feels quite different. At 5' not so much.
@@SkyFiAudio Oh, I'm sure there's a gigantic difference between the $1,200 & $4,000 Technics turntables in person. ...but there are SO MANY OF US nowadays who have to make our audio decisions without hearing OR seeing the stuff we're purchasing.
Myself, for example. I live in a rural area in WV. The closest "real" HiFi store to me is probably Crutchfield's brick & mortar location in Virginia. That'd be a 4 hour drive for me....EACH WAY.
So, pics & online write-ups are all I have to go on, unless I'm lucky enough to be interested in a piece of kit that someone has reviewed on youtube.
It sucks.
...and don't even get me started on buying clothes, shoes, etc etc etc. If you're the type of guy who's cool wearing whatever they have at Walmart, you're fine...but if you're tall....or fat....or you gaf about fashion, you're just outta luck here.....

Proper Technics are and always will be mk2 - mk5 end of.

Why mk2 - mk5?
No pitch control because that's where the demand lies in 2024. Most people never touch them, these decks are known for their superb speed control.

LMAO.. all of these decks are GROSSLY OVERPRICED. These should be no more than $300-$500 each at most. All ya’ll millennials & gen z should know better.
And they will likely outlive you. The only broken SL1200 I have ever seen were abused like a rented mule.
If you carefully study the demographics of the men and women who purchased the wonderful technics SL 1200G, you'd find them mostly to be 40s 50s 60s and older and what sets them apart from the gen z and millennials you speak of is life experience and appreciation of well made products that will last decades, in other words if you pay $4000 for a 1200G today and it lasts you 40 years, then it's been a solid investment, wouldn't you say? Just think of the lesser imitation decks that end up in the trash in 40 years, which makes you think doesn't it? And just suppose after 40 years, you get fed up with it, you can always sell it for good money. 😮
