Selling raw milk remains illegal in many places in the United States, making some feel like modern-day moonshiners.
"White Lightning" parody written and performed by Remy; video produced by Austin Bragg; music tracks, background vocals, and mastering by Ben Karlstrom
    LYRICS
Well in North Carolina way back in the hills
Lived my old pappy and he sold him some milk
He'd brew White Lightning till the sun went down
and then he'd fill up a jug and he'd pass it around
Mighty, mighty pleasing, pappy's cow squeezing
    Ooh…White Lightning…
But the G-Men, T-Men, revenuers too
Were searching for the place pappy made his brew
They were looking trying to book him
    But my pappy kept not-cooking
    Ooh…White Lightning…
SEVERAL ARRESTS WERE MADE AS SELLING RAW MILK REMAINS ILLEGAL TO THIS DAY!
AND SOMEHOW OUR JAILS ARE OVERCROWDED…
    ANYWAY…
Well the next time you're out shopping maybe take a look
Some people like fresh food better than cooked
Food's sold raw, it happens all the time
Though I'll concede there is a milk that should be a crime
Cloudy for some reason, largely unpleasing
    Ew…just frightening…
    In a truly free society
There are some potentially dangerous activities
If you think our jails are crowding maybe we should be allowing
    Ooh…White Lightning…

I knew an older fellow who would insult skim milk by saying "loks like water, tastes like water." Except he would pronounce water like "whoa-der." Every time skim milk is brought up around other people who knew him I always say "looks like whoa-der, tastes like whoa-der." Sometimes I like to say it about water. I just find the large southern twang and sentiment very funny.

Skim milk is not the same as pasteurized whole milk. All skim milk means is that the cream has been skimmed. Skim milk would still be raw milk if unpasteurized.

We used to live right next to a farm when I was a kid, and we never ever bought milk at the store. Since we knew the farmers my grandmother would tell me and my brother to just walk over in the morning with a big metal can and have it filled up before the milk was picked up by the tanker truck. We paid them the same as what we'd pay at the store, which for the farmer meant 5-10 times more than what he was got from industrial bulk purchasers.
Sometimes we had to wait for a half hour until they had finished, but we'd get milk that was literally just minutes old and still warm. Compared to the pasteurized garbage with adjusted fat levels you can buy at the store this was like drinking pure cream, with a taste that stayed with you for the better part of an hour.
Even the best store bought milk is just boring chalky water in comparison. This sounds like a tale from the 1800s but this was just the early 90s.

Large commercial dairies have huge regulatory costs and capital expenditure (sterilization, etc.) and all the other costs to remain competitive, such as marketing. They evolve in the tax and regulatory environment around them.
They see unregulated raw milk from small dairies as a threat to their business and as an affront to their huge investment in compliance. Thus, they will show up and lobby against raw milk and be vociferous about it, i.e. a loud minority. It's very similar to brick and mortar restaurants lobbying against the liberalization of the food truck industry.
It is easy to blame the big corporate interests, which I do for attempting to use the coercive power of government via lobbying. But the state is the enabler and at the heart of the problem that keeps the organic marketplace (pun intended) from developing.
In a deregulated world, there are probably business relationships between large and small family dairies that would have manifested instead of the antagonism. The regulatory agencies themselves should be privatized and be subject to competition, for example removing the state monopoly of the FDA and moving to private and probably more specialized certifications.
Or was that a rhetorical question? lol

Exceeding that may cause chronic fluoride poisoning (fluorosis) characterized by weight loss, weakness, anemia, brittle bones, and stiff joints. Effects may be delayed. Chronic exposure may cause lung damage. Laboratory experiments have resulted in mutagenic effects. Chronic exposure to fluoride compounds may cause systemic toxicity. Raw milk is arguably gross, but when I lived in the country and was able to get me hands on some fresh local milk... It's heavenly
I never buy milk at fairs and markets, only in our village and from the same person
If in 'merkah you can't even buy fresh milk, what the hell is the reason for calling it "land of the free"? Free what exactly?

While you can boil raw milk to kill any pathogens, you don't really want to do that because you will get an odd flavor or burnt flavor to the milk. A while ago, someone figured out that if you heat up milk under pressure to like 280 degrees F, then cool it down to like 40 degrees F in about 5 seconds, you can get the pasteurization process achieved without getting the strange taste to your milk.

That’s not true. Yogurt requires heated milk if you want it to have any body and if you want to perpetuate the strain, although the milk can be thermized. And if you can get your hands on raw milk, there’s nothing stopping you from making cheese for your own use. You’ll get in trouble if you try to sell it, though, unless it’s aged 60 or more days.
