Great list!! I have a lot of those on my tbr as well, and now I've added more! When Breath Becomes Air is fantastic. He actually majored in English in college, and as a graduate degree, so he really knows how to write and its really beautifully written. But, read it only if you're in the mood to cry!
You have the loveliest voice, speech patterns, and mannerisms. You also have the loveliest taste in books! Thanks for sharing your Non-Fiction selections/recommendations! I purchased On Writing a few months ago and haven't read it yet--you've encouraged me to try to do it sooner rather than later! :)
I love the opening with Zeus! It just made my day, which is great after having a migraine ALL day. Thank you for the non-fiction suggestions as I've been wanting to read more of this type of book but didn't know where to start.
Thankyou Helene , I bought Joan Didions book but I haven't read it yet and I Thankyou for telling me about it. I also read wild and it was really good. I'm almost finished with Lincoln in the bardo and a prayer for Owen Meaney . ❤️
When Breath Becomes Air was a heartbreaking but beautiful story. The book also shows the strength of the human spirit despite overwhelming odds. Talking as Fast as I Can was hilarious, my sister and I listened to the audio book which was narrated by Lauren Graham herself. She has lots of funny asides. I think you will love it. I want to read the Diary of a Bookseller, the book sounds like it will be a good read and it's cover is beautiful.
You will love "Wild," even if you've already seen the movie. I thought the movie was well done, but there's so much more substance to the book. (Glass Castle is one of my all-time faves as well. I need to reread it sometime. I'm currently reading "Educated" by Tara Westover, which is quite similar to Glass Castle. Happy reading!) 😊❤️📚
Suzanne Tobias I'll have to check out Educated! Glass castle is in my top 5. I loved the movie Wild, do you think the book is really worth it? It was heavy.
I love love love videos on non-fiction so I thoroughly enjoyed this Helene! I need to read The Diary of a Bookseller, the cover is so beautiful! And you definitely should read When Breath Becomes Air, it's such a beautiful emotional book.
Hi from Australia, I was so surprised when you said you were 30, I thought you were much younger! Just found your channel and really enjoy it and have subscribed. You are so relaxing to watch!
I really enjoy your book selections and your narrative’s! Love your videos. I want to read Joan Didion’s books but I’m afraid they’ll be so sad, I’m not sure if I’m up for that. 💕😉
Think you will like Talking as Fast as I Can. I listened to it on audiobook. It was narrated by Lauren which make it quite enjoyable. You have encouraged me to add a couple of non-fiction books to my TBR: The Diary of a Bookseller and In Order to Live. And as always, a wonderful video!
Hi Helene! Great recommendations! I would recommend purchasing 'Talk As Fast As I Can' in audiobook form, since it's read by Lauren Graham herself. I think it really added to the experience! When Breath Becomes Air was one of the most beautiful medical memoirs I read last year. I can't recommend it enough-- It's a tough read, but definitely worth it. Really looking forward to more non-fiction vids!
The Lauren book was a great experience, and if you liked the Gilmore Girls u will love it, is like you’re listening to Lorelai the whole time :) who eat my cheese is also a great book, a small one too. Nice readings to u :)
The Radium Girls by Kate Moore, I absolutely loved it! Well it's heart-breaking, it's about radium dial painter women in the 1920s, who were getting sick and eventually dying due to the radium and people wouldn't listen to them, saying they were "hysterical women" but they kept fighting and eventually helped make laws we have today to protect workers like that. I haven't read a lot of non-fiction but I do want to get more into it!
I remember liking "The Girls from Ames: A Story of Women and a Forty-Year Friendship." Although the women are much older than me, I thought their story was touching and that was a few years ago. The first chapter made me cry. It sounds like from the reviews that most people don't like the author's style. I don't remember much about that, but I did like their stories, even though it was so different than my own. It's not a long read, either, so you might want to think about it regardless of those reviews. I also read Malala Yousafzai's story, which is pretty fascinating which goes far beyond just her life but into the history of Pakistan and about her parents. Chicken Soup for the Soul books are also good. I'm a reader that likes coming of age stories, so I like the ones about teenagers, mostly. The nice thing about it is that you can read touching short stories from a variety of people with all kinds of backgrounds. I enjoyed "Wild." I don't think I ever watched the movie, but it is how I found out about the book.
Hi Helene! I really love your channel and follow it very often. I love non-fiction books too, and it seems we have a lot in common. So, I put these books on my TBR, thanks a lot :) I would recommend you to read Educated. It's a memoir of a woman who was raised in a fundamental Mormon community in the US. She never went to school or hospital and was pushed to live within conservative views of her family. It's very popular, and it's worth the hype. I loved it and I believe you'd love it. Thanks again for this video, I really enjoyed it. Umut from London.
Well, my list of books to read just got longer!---"Nickel and Dimed" is not only one of the most engrossing books I ever read but one of the most important. When I'm at book sales I buy copies just to give to other people. Dr. Ehrenreich has a follow-up book called "Bait and Switch" which is about what people go through to get a job here in the U.S..---I loved "On Writing" by Stephen King and recently gave a copy to a friend who I think may become a writer.---I'm going to see if my library (thankfully in walking distance) has "Diary of a Bookseller". I MUST read that book!---"Spinster" sounds interesting even for a male reader. I hope someone will write a companion book called "Bachelor". Maybe I'll write it...---Helene, one of my favorite non-fiction books is "Lulu in Hollywood" by Louise Brooks. Miss Brooks started as a dancer, went into silent films in Hollywood and Germany, did a few "talkies", went into obscurity then many years later published autobiographical essays on movie making and the collected essays became an international bestseller. Louise Brooks was not only an accomplished dancer and excellent actress but one of the finest writers I've ever read.
"MY LIFE SO FAR" by Jane Fonda. I couldn't put it down! You can learn so much about her peronal life, fascinating encounters with Marilyn Monroe, Greta Garbo and a challenging relationship with her father. I highly recommend it!
I didn't know that "Midnight in the garden..." was non fiction. I saw the film. I want to read "Talking as fast as I can" and "Between the world and me" too.
Yes, Helene, please read "Between the World and Me"! It's a hyped book, but trust me when I say that the hype is worth it. For me personally it was eye-opening. I also live in Europe and I had an inkling about the status of black people in America, but I had no idea that it was so bad. Oh, and Coates writes just beautifully, you'll see. I read the book not only for its content, but also for its writing. On the topic of non-fiction, I'm currently reading something that I think you'd be interested in. It's a book called "Escape from camp 14", written by Blaine Harden, and it's also about North Korea. It's easy to read, but its content is just horrible. :( It's an important book and it's a different perspective than Yeonmi Park's. I highly recommend it! ;) Happy reading to you too! ^_^
Totally enjoyed this longer video! I am really interested in the Cheryl Strayed books, thanks for highlighting these. On a slightly different note, I really dislike the word spinster. To me, it has connotations of unhappy elderly ladies. I guess that is what the author is trying to debunk in calling her book by the name? I would still feel a bit insulted to be called a spinster!
I loved In Order To Live. So eye-opening and unbelievable. I’ve also wanted to read the Joan Didion book. But it sounds soooooo sad. Also Wild is so good. Way better than the movie (which was good) in my opinion.
If you want to read more about life as a single person, I would recommend "all the single ladies by Rebecca Traister. It is about the history of the single women, and also about different "problems" you might encounter when being single. It is very good.
Would also recommend, Between the World and Me. It's beautifully written and more of a personal, rather than academic view of racism in America. It does deserve its hype and unfortunately is still as timely as ever.
Steven king's fans are gonna hate me for it but for me On Writing was as good as his best work e.g. Mysery if not better. In Order to live is a very moving read and I recommend you to watch the author's adress before the UN, it's breathtaking. If I may recommend to you a new non-fiction novel it would be Girl at War, 5/5.
Thanks! A recommendation that would be essential to any "American bibliography" (or whatever it is called): Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood," first published in 1966. About 400 pages, depending on the edition.
Helene, you never have to worry about your videos being too long!! We love them!
I wish you could read me a bedtime story every night. You are lovely to listen to and you have a wonderful accent.
Mike Stone I so agree! Helene's channel is one of my faves because I find her voice so soothing. 😊

Read Nickel & Dimed senior year of college.. so that was wonderful. Thanks for sharing! I'm here bc of Chapterstacks 👋🏻 *subscribed!

I am reading on writing right now and it's amazing. I will be rereading this book several times through the rest of my life.

Hello Helene. What kind of non-fiction do you much prefer to read?
Isaac Newton also gravitated but towards apples.
I remember liking "The Girls from Ames: A Story of Women and a Forty-Year Friendship." Although the women are much older than me, I thought their story was touching and that was a few years ago. I read when breath becomes air, l really loved it, it inspired me.. u should read it when u can, totally recommended!

Umut Rados Thanks! That book sounds super interesting so I just ordered it 😉
Looking forward to watching your thoughts on it :)
If you haven’t read his books, you might add Erik Larson to your nonfiction writers. Especially Dead Wake and The Devil in the White City.

Are you going to read Blue Nights, the sequel to The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion?
If you enjoyed The Glass Castle you will also love her other book Half Broke Horses about Jeanette’s grandmother. Both excellent reads x
seanandhelen Thanks! That book definitely goes straight to my wishlist 🙂
Helene Have a look at Homemade Wanderlust' channel she did the PCT hike last year ...; btw I read the book before the movie and liked both
Olivia Lang's book is totally worth reading. It was not a comforting book to read but very interesting.
"MY LIFE SO FAR" by Jane Fonda. I couldn't put it down! You can learn so much about her peronal life, fascinating encounters with Marilyn Monroe, Greta Garbo and a challenging relationship with her father. I highly recommend it!
