THE BOAT: Scow Bow Mini-Cruiser. 14’ long (4.25M,) with a 6’ beam (1.8M,) and a draft of 2’6” (0.77M.) She features twin keels and a Ljungström rig. Every design decision is made to keep her simple, strong, and watertight.
In this episode I use foam to create a male mold for my hatch cover. I build the hatch using layers of fiberglass and carbon fiber. The hinge was designed in CAD to lift up over the lip of the hatch hole and then hinge forward to open.
I also prepped holes to install a few pieces of deck hardware, including the tube the reefing line will pass through into the doghouse. Some fiddles were added in the doghouse to allow some items to be stored just below the forward doghouse deadlights.
A boweye fitting was added on the aft end of the doghouse to allow me to lock the hatch cover closed. A handle was added to the hatch cover for the same reason. I made it by epoxying on several layers of fiberglass and synthetic webbing.

A lot of work but it turned out great. Much cooler then the typical square hatch.
I am impressed with your designing, planning and execution of the construction. I like it when a person develops a plan and then follows it rather than building Willy Nelly and then scraping their work to start all over! You will be sailing in no time!
Sven Yrnind did that recently, but he's an experienced sailor and boat builder legend.
Yes, watching Sven is both comical and painful. I'm assuming that was your inference. This design, flawed as it is, has been much better to follow along with.
Congratulations to good work
Glad that you now have many subscribers. More will follow
Congrats on 10,000!! Acetone is great for eating up foam in a male form
Doghouse looks very cool.
Congratulation for the 10k, Could you make a quick video on the rounded quantity, epoxy, wood, pvc, foam needed to build that nice boat ? Thanks
Glad to see you've made your 10,000 goal.
Increíble work. Amazing. You are a great source of inspiration, as Yann. Hope to see one day Baluchon and your fabulous boat side by side...
I would love to meet him, especially if we can get the boats together.
It’s been months you are my favorite UA-cam and I watch a lot of them. I’m beginning to worry about you. Are you OK or did you say off without us?
Nice work! Need an updated video 😊
Thanks, next one is coming. It's hard to do much in the current heat though 🥵.
Perry. Congratulations on reaching 10k subscribers! I have been watching since nearly day 1 and enjoyed it all. Dave from Canada.
Ohhh long time viewer! Thanks for sticking around. Been a long road.
CONGRATS ON 10K!
This is a nice Space Ship you are building in your garage. 🌌 :)
This is an algorithm booster! ⛵
Perfect! I love that you took the time and care to design and build your own hatch. Unique, strong, and very cool.
Hey bud!! I just ran into you at the gas station in Pecos, Tx. Cool boat, and thanks for the info about it. Goodluck on your move and i made sure to subscribe!! I will share your channel on my FB. It's definitely awesome to support someone with an original plan, great attitude, and watch them live out their goals.
That's awesome, thanks for coming up to meet me and the subscribe!
Congrats on reaching 10K 🎉
Watch out for the dust!! Nice job.
Yes I wear a good mask. 👍
Interested to see what is planned to stop water coming into the cabin through that bow line opening.
Very nice boat. I met him and his family in Atlanta, Georgia
It was great meeting you! Thanks for commenting.
Looks good and that hatch seems plenty strong. Congrats on the 10k
Oh mate so good :) can’t wait till you sailing over here across the pond to Europe:)))
On my way 👍
This hatch feels like the “special feature” at the heart of this boat. Your videos are improving as well. This one and the previous felt filled with accomplishments. Well done!
Congratulations Captain Perry! Really pleased for you reaching 10k subscribers. I've watched every episode with due respect for your hard work and determination 👏 🎉👍
Congrats on reaching your goal of 10,000 subscribers. Based on your outstanding boat work and videos, I thought you would achieve it earlier, but better late than never. The boat is really starting to look even better as you complete the hatch and ports, etc. I look forward to the boat going into the water and know it will complete the the water trials, etc. with ease due to your professional diligence and hard work.
Congratulations on hitting 10,000 subscribers. It's good that so many more people are watch your efforts.
The boat really has come along a lot over the last few months and I'm looking forward to seeing the exterior paint job.
Blondie Hasler was a tough guy and a real war time hero as well as being a great sailor. Have you read the book Blondie by Ewen Southby-Tailyour?
Not yet I'll check it out.
Congratulations again on the 10K subs. And man, I am loving the lines on this boat. That doghouse looks gorgeous.
That's awesome to hear, thanks
That handle turned out so well. I was so impressed when the cardboard came out, somehow I expected a fight. Instead it's a flawless victory !
Also congrats on \o/ 10K \o/
Congrats to the 10k subscribers; it's well deserved. You have made significant progress with the boat. Cheers.
looking forward to see a perfect barrel to that hatch..😂
Awesome.
As you landed 10000! Maybe you could give us a little design review of the parts of the boat you have already revealed? Its one of the most gratifying things to watch.
thanks
Congratulations!!
Happy to be part of that 10K, Cap'n. You'd be surprised to see how quickly 20 and 30K would come when you wet that keel.
Truly, I joy to behold! I particularly loved the squeaking foam and the prybar. What a fantastic moment.
Me too! Thanks Tom.
looking good!
Looks really cool with that small dog house on that large flat deck.
Thanks I think so too.
Indeed, the hinge is strong enough 💪super 👍captain Perry
Well done on your 10K, and good job on the hatch, i wont argue that it is better than a plywood one ;-)
20 minute video was a treat!
It’s coming along very nicely! 😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
Congrats with your 10000+ followers. Keep up the good work! All the best from the Netherlands
Man it’s been sometime since I last thought about boats and hobbies, then I remembered your little project and it’s crazy to see how far you’ve taken it. Love the series and the boat ur making captain
Yes it's come a long way. I hope you keep checking in on progress 😁.
@@ocean_capable_small_sailboat definitely will cap, I hope I can sail one day myself, watching you is pretty inspiring
It's coming along quite nicely. Well done, the hatch has everything I would want
Congratulations on 10k subscribers. Really enjoying your channel. With the doghouse fitted and hatch added she's really looking like a very nice vessel.
An aerospace grade manhole cover!
Man, this is really looking quite impressive. My hats off to you.
Thanks a lot!
good for you congratulations with the 10000 sub, and thank you for all the good work.
Good work as usual. Can't wait to see it hit the waters. Cheers from Mauritius.
Thank you for this video. In case you would'nt know it, Yann Quenet and his "Baluchon" have now left Brittany, and they started their second " Round the World Tour".🙂
He actually already crossed the bay of Biscay and is currently having a break in La Coruña.
Congrats on hitting your sub goal, skipper!
I think in bad weather you’re going to get a significant amount of water through that reefing line eye. I hope you’ve made sure it has a way down to the bilges without causing too much trouble!
I'd hold judgements until the end. I could cork it with a rubber plug if a lot of water is coming on deck. There will also be a cleat on deck for this line, so it can be controlled from either place. I can test it out and always make adjustments.
@@ocean_capable_small_sailboat Fair enough, but when water is shooting into the doghouse is not the time to sort these things out. If you cross Oceans the question is when, not whether, green water will come across the deck in a storm you have to ride out. And how you are going to make ground up wind in bad weather is one of the things which needs careful thought sooner rather than later.
I think I would have routed it to the rear of the doghouse, round a pulley and in through the side, or even two pulleys and through the rear.
There will be a lot of water pressure on the tube when the waves sweep the deck.
All said, being able to fully control the sail from within is going to keep you dry inside much better than having to open the hatch.
@@johntait8422 Patience. The boat is still under construction.
@@markthomasson5077 if you route it to the rear of the doghouse, what's preventing a following wave crashing from behind and in?
Bravo Zulu on your accomplishment 👏
WOW ! really coming on now
Great achievement, after many hours of working you almost complete the construction. Then is fairing and sanding repeated multiple times and painting.
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you. Hopefully fairing and sanding just once. No need to look like a new car finish.
It's almost taking a submarine look about it ! lol , just waiting for the periscope and plaining fins and ballast tanks with gyro to be added ! lol
Do you intend to take your scow bow across any oceans, congratulations on your subscription and the boat is looking great
Absolutely, little by little we're getting there.
Great update, Perry!!
Excellent work!!
Great progress
Cpt Perry, you going to put in an internal latch on the hatch as well? Also, gasket for it? The assembly is robust for sure. As far as Nav and radio signals, you can also add antennas under a layer of glass. Just a thought. Great progress sir!
Yes and yes, but those have to wait for paint.
I know you have the ventilation vent that will be waterproof even during rollover, but will that be enough? Your window/portholes are going to be sealed and non opening yes? It may get too hot inside there to sleep even with the doghouse open.
You're probably right, it's going to be hot as hell. I'd love to have a bunch of wide open hatches for maxim airflow but then you resign yourself to the risk of suddenly taking on a lot of water.
Looks like if it is raining the cover will catch rain and pour it in the hatch when you close it.
Ideally you close it before rain water pools in it. If there is some you just close slowly and it can spill out the bottom before swinging over the hatch hole.
Congrats 🎉
Locks keep honest people honest.

Next Level work and video compilation Perry-
So that’s how it all comes together or closes up after all the discussions. Huh !
I’ve been trying to mentally picture it all in actuality or in “Perry” / human scale for quite some time...
And now I’ve gotten to actually see it at 18:46 in this video, as you entered your boat, down the hatch entry, as you will from here on out, I suppose.
Did it feel like you’ve seen some virtual reality visions and mini movies of it working out many times previous when it finally came time that you actually got your opportunity to board your boat down the hatch and close it shut in reality for the first time?
Or was it anything like you had first envisioned early on in your build?
Lastly, are sure Jester and Col. blondie Hasler was your influence for this hatch entryway?
As you once claimed to be a 90’s kid... I got thinking, perhaps the tunnel-way piping of Nintendo’s Mario Bro’s or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles manhole getaway adventures might have subliminally stuck with you beyond your childhood and into adulthood or something like that perhaps... (Mostly kidding)
I guess from here it is onward, to all those little details, from here on out, until it’s ready to set sail, right?
Well done!
I really want to go on a long trip on a boat like yours, made by my own hands, I have a genuine doubt if you could make a video talking about it, what would it be like to take a shower and also to use the bathroom (to poop) on these small boats that don't necessarily have a bathroom, thank you very much.
👍👍👍
The doghouse design looks fine, except the main hatch i found difficult access on rough sea
With repetition, entry and exit become second nature.
@@ocean_capable_small_sailboat You will have to show a closeup on how the hatch hinge works. If it has a double hitch to lift upward before it hinges open, I'd be worried if the hinge ever malfunctioned or was damaged you'd be locked inside.
marveless cool
Google Wayne Dickinson, I knew him many many beers ago.
Do you have a date for Sea Trials ?
At this rate, by the time he retires..
@@dboboc it's the journey and not the destination. I bought 20 acres in 2010 and started hand planting trees around a 5 acre lake. My friends asked why. I said I wanted to have woods around the lake. I hand planted 3,000 trees 6 inches tall every year since. My friends said I'd be dead before I have my woods. I now have 45,000 trees (that lived, many did not) and some are 25 feet tall. I'm still planting. I enjoyed the all the effort, even in 100 degrees, planting just as much as I enjoy the beauty and wildlife the trees have brought.
Hopefully no one will use it to lock you in. Be sure to have tools inside to escape if necessary. LOL
You can also dissolve most styrofoam with a very small amount of gas.
Pretty messy though. Much more pleasant to just pop it out if you can.
@@ocean_capable_small_sailboat true!
Is the hatch going to get a dead light in the top?
Essential for looking up at the sail?
Initially no. I did consider it. But I'll wait until I've sailed her a bit and see if it's really wanted, then one can be added in the future if so. I bet in reality the hatch will usually be open for fresh air.
Hi, not sure about your concerns about GPS signal. If you buy a marine GPS unit you should get an external "mushroom" antenna and you can run the cable through a water tight grommet.
If you type this into google you will see what I am talking about - "Xinuo XF-520 5'' Marine Satellite GPS Navigator Color LCD Screen Dual-Mode Positioning Boat Map Plotter GPS Navigation".
I hope you were wearing a mask when sanding and cutting carbon fibre - the dust is nasty stuff.
I've sailed before with no external antenna and I don't feel it's necessary. The units can send and receive their signal fine though the boat. If you watch my videos you'll see I'm pretty much always in a mask when it's needed.
@@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
Exactamente. Ahora mismo en mi teléfono y dentro de casa recibo la señal de cuatro constelaciones de satélites: GPS, Glonass, Galileo y Osa Mayor
If the lines go inside arn't you introducing moisture to the inside of the boat?
Yes, some. We'll see, adjustments can be made.
When from navigations for you?!
Sorry from my English 😅...
Hoping to get in the water this fall!
@@ocean_capable_small_sailboat Very good!!
👍👍😎👍👍
Where are you? It’s been weeks since I heard from you. What’s going on?
I'll be back with a new video soon. July/August is my very busy season with my day job so sadly I have to deal with that first.
Thank you so much for your reply. You are very fastidious.
:)
